5.0 out of 5 stars Music making at it's best, 14 Jun 2011
This is a sublime recording. Don't want to get into the whys and hows. I have at least five recordings of the motets and the the Jacobs and Cantus Koln are the only two that can give it any sort of run for its money. Buy it... now!

5.0 out of 5 stars A definite buy, 14 Jun 2011
Saw a production of this opera at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden just recently and decided to purchase a recording. It is a brilliant opera and the cast on this recording is stunning.
A great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Huelgas Ensemble at their most sublime, 9 Feb 2007
As a lover of early music and having previously bought recordings of the Heulgas Ensemble I purchsed this recording expecting the usual high standard. What I got was something much, much more. This recording is a living example of 'affetti'. These madrigals by Lassus are presented here simply and full of emotion. The voices blend seamlessly with the viol consort and divers instruments creating an atmosphere full of emotion. I will recommend this to anyone looking for great music, beautiful singing and classy packaging. Buy it!! NOW!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime!!! Simply Sublime!!!!, 30 July 2002
This review is from: Handel: Semele (Audio CD)
Well, what else can one say but that this is probably the best recording of a Handel opera/oratorio in history. From Captain to Cook, all is at their best.
I have never listened to an entire opera with such rapt concentration. The recitativi are sung crisply and yet there is still a sense of space and direction.
From the opening chord of the overture you are collared by a sense of drama and actually become interested in what is going on.
The singers sing with purpose and passion. They all have excellet diction, and tasteful ornaments. Not the Natalie Dessay and Bartoli type. Proper Baroque ornaments, that help make the music lively, spontaneous and thrilling.
But the pierce de resistance, is Miss Battle in the title role. AMAZING!!!!!! Just listen to the thrid act aria "No,no I'll take no less". The supporting cast is just as good, with special commendation to Slyvia Mc Nair and John Aler.
John Nelson has such a mastery over the chorus and orchestra that they will follow him to the ends of the earth and rightly so. He knows how this music should sound. Anthoy Newmann is probably one of the best continuo players around, he fits his chords around the voice as it was meant to be. Top class conducting.
By this box set. You WILL NOT regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pristine! With that extra burnsih that sets it apart, 30 May 2001
There is something special with the way Seiji Ozawa approaches the music he conducts. It is more than an informed performance. He genuinely likes what he plays and treats each piece as his favourite. It is this enthusiasm that comes across in his recordings.
A remarkable orchestra, is the BSO which absorbs itself in the music, giving a professional and emotive reading. Very sensitive to singer and chorus and possesses a firm grasp of the ideals of composer and conductor.
Kathleen Battle has given here, one of her best performances ever, on this recording. She is spot on!! Sublime, pure tone without excessive vibrato and un-necessary portamentos. Especially in the Agnus Dei. A piece that is truly a nightmare for most sopranos. Set against the backdrop of the Tangelewood Festival Chorus and you have music magic.
Buy this one!! You won't regret it!!!!!!
