3.0 out of 5 stars Brightness and Colour terrible at default settings, 24 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had a cheap monitor on my internet computer and a 19 ins Iiyama monitor on my main photo editing and text work computer. This was proving a little on the small side so I wanted a larger monitor for that machine and then move the Iiyama to my internet computer.

I had been pleased with the Iiyama and was going to get another for the serious work; but this Benq appeared to be better.

Because my main workstation is never connected to the internet the installation disc wouldn't auto play; but I eventually managed to open the files and load everything.

When I first tried to use this monitor I was so disappointed! The default settings were excessively bright and over coloured. I need true colours for photo work.

Finally, with the help of some monitor check cards, I managed to switch the colour to sRGB mode and reduced brightness and contrast by around half. And that produced acceptable results.

The default settings may be fine for people who want to play games with high brightness and garish colours but expect to spend some time with adjustments if you want to do any serious work. Preferably make adjustments with a proper colour management tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good so far, 30 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
To be honest, I had always associated Tamron with budget priced lenses so was surprised to see this lens being compared directly against high price Canon L alternatives.

My Canon 24-105 L had stopped working, after about 3 years, so I was searching around while deciding what to do. I wasn't necessarily looking for the cheapest option.

After reading a number of reviews I decided to purchase the Tamron, although still with some trepidation!

After a couple of weeks use, it seems fine.

Yes it is all plastic, but high grade impact resistant plastic and most metal based lenses have plastic working parts anyway.

The zoom does work the other way from Canon lenses. But the Tamron rotation actually seems more logical to me.

After a few tests, I find F2.8 to be unacceptably soft particularly at the corners. Although many lenses suffer a little when used at their extremities.

By F4 everything looks a lot better. And continues to F16 where there is a fraction of softness creeping in. Better in the centre than the edges.

Most of my shooting is in the F6.3 to F11 range where the lens gives excellent results.

Comparing 70 mm at F4 against my Canon 70-200 F4 L lens the Tamron is far superior; although possibly not a fair test.

AF is quick and quiet. The VC stabilisation works fine. I even tried shooting on a tripod with the VC on (not recommended) but never found any problems.

The lens hood is firm and easy to attach. I find many hoods easily get cross threaded then jam.

In short, as far as I have used the lens, everything looks good. But if you want a lens to specifically shoot sharp at F2.8, I would suggest looking for something else; probably not a zoom, as most zooms do suffer somewhat at their extremities.

For me, 70 mm tends to be a bit limiting compared with my previous 24-105 mm, but other people probably want a little more at the other end (like 18 mm)!

4.0 out of 5 stars Strongly constructed with long range beam, 6 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A little more expensive than some other makes but very solid construction.

Long range beam. Far more than what would be necessary for most presentations, etc. Beam is quite narrow at normal range so useful for highlighting small areas.

My only complaint; it came without any instructions, so I had to guess at the required batteries and how to install them. Not too difficult to work out if you are a practical person though.

If there had been detailed 'paperwork' I would have given it the full 5 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but a bit weak in places, 29 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I can't help thinking that with a little bit of extra effort these could have been all time classics.

Futtocks End has some good moments but I found it to be too predictable and lacking in 'clever humour'.

A Home of your Own includes many famous names of the time and has a few highlights, although nothing really unexpected or side splitting funny.

In fact anybody who remembers building sites of that period may well consider this to be more of a documentary than a comedy. I have certainly heard many true stories which were funnier than this production.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cartoons which are clever as well as funny, 29 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This has always been one of my favourite cartoon characters, probably due to the extremely clever storylines. Something unexpected always occurs and leaves me thinking about why I didn't see that coming.

I haven't noticed any problems about the display size. Perhaps it is the way my TV is configured, or maybe I was concentrating so hard on the action I never actually saw anything wrong.

4.0 out of 5 stars Includes much of the great comic talent from a previous age, 19 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Different people will always have various opinions on what is great humour; however, these are my thoughts on this DVD.

'If You go Down in the Woods Today' isn't exactly full of side splitting laughter but I found it to be a good enjoyable traditional cops and robbers tale with a few unexpected twists and more than sufficient humour.

For me, 'Rhubarb, Rhubarb' was the weakest item and although it has it's funny moments I found it a bit predictable.

When purchasing this DVD, I assumed 'The Plank' was the all time classic which also starred Tommy Cooper and was a little disappointed with this Arthur Lowe alternative. Although it still has plenty of laughs and I suppose if I hadn't previously seen the alternative version I would have rated this one more highly.

'Mr H is Late' & 'It's Your Move' are absolute classics of rather simple but extremely funny visual humour and contain so many of the great comic characters of the past that just trying to put names to faces was entertaining in itself.

This film was shot near where I live and I knew the two local fishermen who made a 'guest appearance'. It was good to see this film again.

An excellent performance all round and very funny, plus a good story line.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like Ross Noble this DVD is good value., 6 Mar 2011

Ross Noble's impromptu style doesn't appeal to everybody although it certainly requires a unique talent.

I found some items were absolutely brilliant while others fell a bit flat for me; but if you like Ross Noble this DVD is very good value.

The Mosquito has become something of a 'forgotten' aircraft but this excellent documentary puts the record straight and tells the whole story from conception to the final plane.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a 'retro romp', 4 Mar 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
By today's standards, it seems strange to remember that Russ Meyer was once considered very risque and was pushing back the excessive censorship of that age.

Now, it all looks rather tame; when compared with some of the 'nasty' material around today, There was a degree of 'innocence' with Russ Meyer's style. More a case of a 'retro romp' than serious pornography.

The pseudo documentary style of this production does require a bit of initial thought and while there is a degree of humour it is more of a sly grin than side splitting laughter.

But for anyone who wants to remember a 'gentler' age; or is studying that period of time, I would recommend this production.
