Tommy Stanley's Secondary School Adventure

5.0 out of 5 stars Tommy Stanley's Secondary School Adventure, 19 July 2015

It's a lovely read, the story of a schoolboy and the incidents and adventures he encounters during his first year of secondary school, told with fascinating perspective and insight.

Jamie Dyer is a very talented author, he writes with honesty, integrity and a unique viewpoint. He makes you feel as if you're walking in his characters' shoes, perfectly capturing those childhood and very early adolescent feelings, but at the same time seeing your own early experiences through your adult eyes.

This book is so worth a read, it's unlike anything else I have read. It's so much more than another school tale. It's wonderful and I loved every page

I first heard this when watching the 1974 CMA awards (recently!), which Johnny hosted, and he performed the song, which was newly released, then. I think I would say I prefer the live performance slightly better than the record, but the style is a little unusual for Johnny Cash, while still retaining that unmistakable feel. Nice song.

For what it is, I think this DVD is probably quite good. If I were a Bobby Darin fan I probably would have enjoyed it - so Bobby Darin fans, go ahead - you will most likely be pleased.

However, I must issue a warning to anyone who is buying this for any other reason. I bought it because the listing has country stars Charley Pride, Ronnie Milsap, Dolly Parton, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed listed as featured performers. I doubted, when I first saw this, if they would have been involved in Bobby Darin's show, but I do know that the five of them worked together on an episode of a TV show called "In Concert" featuring the top RCA country artists of the time in 1975. So I hoped that that concert might be included as one of those random special features sometimes included on DVDs which seem to have nothing to do with the main content.
Sadly, this is not the case.

So, if you are hoping to see any of the above mentioned country stars, please do not buy this as you will be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roy & Priscilla at last!, 14 Oct. 2012
Great voices, entertaining and touching songs. This duo were worthy of competition with the superstar country duos of the time, like Tammy&George, Johnny&June, Conway&Loretta, Dolly&Porter. It is wonderful to find this album available digitally at last, and I hope someone soon offers Roy&Priscilla's second album 'Together Again' as mp3 download or CD, as well as more of Ms Mitchell's solo work for Mercury. If you want to hear her earlier work, you can find the mp3 here of 'It Could Be', a song on the album of her husband Jerry Reed's NRC label work, when they both worked/recorded in Atlanta in their teens, on which I believe she serves as lead vocalist.I thoroughly recommend this album.

The Beatles Rock Band (Wii)
The Beatles Rock Band (Wii)
Offered by media-4-u
Price: £5.92

5.0 out of 5 stars The Beatles Rockband, 13 Jan. 2012
I bought this for my sister as she had a guitar controller and game, but she did not like the rock edition she had, so I got this in order that she could play along with some songs she knew and liked. It's very good, easy to follow, you can add all the other controllers (for singing, etc), there are some nice graphics of The Beatles while you play. It's easy enough for me (not a Wii whizz!) to understand, enjoy and even get some half-decent points ;)

Thoroughly recommend, especially if you enjoy The Beatles' music, but equally if not.

This is yet another brilliant, enjoyable, wonderful album from a master musician, singer, writer and overall entertainer. Most tracks are from a live show, which really gives a great atmosphere, lots of fun and laughs, very engaging.

The only thing I would say is - if this is your first Jerry Reed album, buy it alongside something else, as it doesn't do him absolutely full justice in terms of the sensitivity, feeling and musical genius displayed on his RCA albums, is probably enjoyed more if you know of him already. Otherwise - Jerry fans or casual enjoyers of country music, this is a lovely album, Jerry back with some of the team who worked with him when he first started making records at Capitol in 1954, 40 years before this was recorded, on top form.

Jerry Reed was one of the finest entertainers around and you can feel on this album the fun he had, the enjoyment he got from performing and being with like-minded people. You get funny fishing stories, enjoy his special brand of storytelling, and hear some great new songs from a legend of country music and films.

His feeling about music was that, as long as people were enjoying themselves listening to it, it was doing its job. I think this album definitely ticks that box, and the album is just another job well done by Mr. Reed. You have to smile and enjoy yourself - it's impossible not to, when listening to such an accomplished entertainer.

For those who followed his career, you will recognise some of the names in the sleeve who worked on the project, as well as his musicians - including Jerry's wife Priscilla - and feel the passion he had for the business and performing with those long-time friends.

Overall, a great, funny album, worth buying for each individual track, let alone all combined. You will fall about laughing when he tells the story of his F-16 flight.

Fond smiles and much appreciation, enormous enjoyment through and through.
I thoroughly recommend this album.

A brilliant film, especially if you first saw it as a child. Very enjoyable, great voices, great songs, a feisty Princess, a self-conscious hero, a genie, an evil baddie and a cute tiger with loads of fun thrown in.

This looks fabulous and is so much fun, just like all the best Disney animations - if you like Jungle Book, Lion King and Beauty and the Beast then you'll probably love this, too.

This is a fairly well-made adaptation of a Barbara Cartland novel and when I say this, people should know what to expect. It is very much in that everso romantic style which people who prefer more sophisticated modern-day material will probably find pretty dull. However, if you can embrace the gushing and melodramatic elements and move past them (it is not too hard to do once you know that they are here to stay), you will find a (perhaps unintentionally - apologies to the film makers) funny film that will actually engage you, populated with fine British actors such as Gordon Jackson, Gareth Hunt, a cameo from Sir John Mills, Christopher Cazenove, Claire Bloom and of course Hugh Grant and Oliver Reed.
The baddies are bad, the goodies are good, there are those in between who change sides when it suits them, just like all the best historical stories.
Fans of Hugh Grant will love this, and those who are not so keen will enjoy all the other fabulous talent.
Don't take it too seriously and you can have an enjoyable time watching with a few good laughs.

Dyson DC20 Stowaway Origin Cylinder Vacuum cleaner
Dyson DC20 Stowaway Origin Cylinder Vacuum cleaner

2.0 out of 5 stars Pros and cons, 21 Sept. 2010
Initially, after using our last Dyson, an upright, for about ten years when it eventually gave up completely (we had been very pleased with it, much better than other brands we tried), I was very pleased with this product. It picked up the dog hair, people hair, dust, gardening mess traipsed through house, etc, all carpet nightmares. It began to lose suction, though, after about four months and just went downhill. Dyson sent a new floor head, improved performance for about a month then started losing suction again. Now looking for new hoover, hopefully cheaper, since you don't always get all that you pay for it seems.

I forgave it for being bulky and heavy because of its powerful suction and pickup, but the brush-head worried me from the start and I think it may be its downfall. Have tried a VAX shampoo-combo cylinder vacuum in the past which had a conventional floor head which seems much better.

This is about twice as heavy as conventional cylinder hoovers and is difficult to manoeuvre around a cluttered though fairly spacious family home, eg in childrens bedrooms, bathroom, etc.

For ease of movement and carrying upstairs, etc, I would not recommend this product

Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison [1957] ~ Deborah Kerr, Robert Mitchum, Fusamoto Takasimi, and Noboru Yoshida (II) IMPORT DVD
Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison [1957] ~ Deborah Kerr, Robert Mitchum, Fusamoto Takasimi, and Noboru Yoshida (II) IMPORT DVD

5.0 out of 5 stars A great movie, 2 Sept. 2010
Heaven Knows Mr Allison is a war movie with a difference - a shipwrecked american marine and a nun are stranded together on an island during WW2, resisting and hiding out from the Japanese and just learning how to get along together, etc.
Naturally, over the course of the film Mr Allison falls in love with Sister Angela, and it is easy to believe that, were she not married to God, so to speak, she would be in love with him, but it is dealt with sensitively, poignantly and tastefully, giving a satisfactory conclusion to what is sometimes a nail-biting film (especially for us romantics).

A very interesting and engaging film, Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum do a wonderful job in the leading roles, constituting the only personal look at real characters during the whole film, the only other people on the island being looked at en masse as The Japanese and the rescuing forces, The Americans.

If you like either of these two actors you will love this film, if you like war movies only for the action you may be a little disappointed but there are a few good, slightly gory encounters, etc, and a couple of violent air raids, intermingled with the romance, the getting to know one another, the fright and terror while they wait in a little cave to be captured.

All in all I love this film and thoroughly recommend it :-)
