Highlanders: A History of the Highland Clans
Highlanders: A History of the Highland Clans
by Fitzroy Maclean
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars "Highlanders" is indeed a great history of the people of the high lands, 14 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
"Highlanders" is indeed a great history of the people of the high lands. They are all there, with their independence, ferocious fights, collective life, honour for their head, a very pleasant account of them, starting from gaelic songs and words - up to half XX century still the big Islands in the west (Hebrides and Skye and minor islands) were mainly gaelic speaking, and I know a lady from Inverness (not a gaelic land) where some of her mates from the west were following courses in gaelic indeed, to keep their language alive. This is almost completely gone, nowadays; Gaelic is taught as a dead language in some courses at university.

The fights among them, helped by short connections with their momentous external friends and adversaries, are splendidly described.

A big cheer for Fitzroy Maclean, and many postumous thanks to him for that other big book about his war time (not to talk about Bonnie Prince Charlie).

4.0 out of 5 stars sad and moving, 23 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I saw Tales of Manhattan when a little boy, soon after liberation from the Germans. Since then it stayed in a corner, as an icon whose details I lost more and more. It took to me, what? 70 years, more or less, to get a copy. Actually little by little I forgot about the movie along all those years; I just got a few spare glimpses.
The movie is, in its time, very interesting, talking about, what? a tailcoat, the very origin of so many different stories (known to each other just by the passage of the single tailcoat). So very interesting, both amusing, sad and moving. I got involved. Thought it is a movie one should see (and listen to).Not a great movie but almost so. Good luck to the onlookers !

The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden
The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden
by Jonas Jonasson
Edition: Paperback
Price: £3.85

5.0 out of 5 stars A very special sort of girl !, 31 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I liked everything of this pleasant, exciting story. The story of the girl is clearly special: she was raised in South Africa during apartheid and was assigned to the man who, drunken, put her under the wheels. Happily for her this man was always drunk and, qhile being the head of the nuclear project, could not understand a word, so she was compelled to learn and intervene for him.
The rest of the story is long: she fled to Sweden, found the crate containng the seventh bomb at the Israel Embassy and was involved continuously in a series of fantastic stories. In the end she became friend with the Royalties of Sweden. At the very last moment, she was the (black) ambassador of Sweden to a renewed South Africa ! A great pleasure to read !

Notre Dame
Notre Dame
Dvd ~ Maureen O'Hara

4.0 out of 5 stars Notre Dame: interesting movie before the 2nd War, 6 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Notre Dame (DVD)
Notre Dame is a good movie (for its time) directed by a well known director, William Dieterle. The story is complex. Two persons single out in the screen: Maureen O'Hara, the gypsy girl condemned to be hanged (don't worry, she shall survive) and even more, the horrid Charles Laughton, disguised as the humpback of Notre Dame. And many other people are present: the king of France (Edmund O'Brien), Alan Marshall (who will marry her in the end), Thomas Mitchell as a popular rebel and sir Cedric Hardwicke, the diabolic Frollo who sends Maureen to her death. An interesting (though outdated) movie.

Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House [1948] [DVD]
Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House [1948] [DVD]
Dvd ~ Cary Grant
Price: £5.00

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice movie of 1948, 12 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In this movie, directed by HC Potter, Cary Grant ant Myrna Loy are led to invest a lot of money (that they must get from a bank since they don't have it all), in a house in the countryside that they fatigue to understand must be destroyed and remade; water is found over 200 feet below ground while a few yards away they could have got it much cheaper and so on. However in the end they are very proud of their new home and their dear friend Melvyn Douglas can only agree with them.

A pleasant movie full of tricks, all pleasant to the viewer (not to them generally) , always worth for the spectator to smile about. Even when wife and friend must spend a night alone in the same house (the movie was shot in 1948).

DIE NIBELUNGEN (Masters of Cinema) (DVD) [1924]
DIE NIBELUNGEN (Masters of Cinema) (DVD) [1924]
Dvd ~ Fritz LANG
Offered by bestmediagroup
Price: £9.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Die Nibelungen, 12 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fritz Lang directed this movie in 1924. It tells the story in two different parts. In the first one we see Siegfried killing the dragon and becoming almost invincible. His connection to the royal Nibelungen Clan is sealed by his marriage to Kriemhild. However Hagen kills him in the only possible place. In the second part Kriemhild travels to the remote land of the Huns to wed to Attila and organize her force to a vengeance of Hagen and the remaining Nibelungen. This is a most terrifyng sequence shot by Lang.
The movie is long (5 hours); although similar to the mith by Wagner, Lang employs a systematic sort of geometrical patterns, and the actors themselves behave typically like in a japanese Kabuki-style movie. A great, great performance by the MASTERS OF CINEMA series.

5.0 out of 5 stars 40 days of Musa Dagh, 12 Nov. 2013

I received this book today 20 days after it was sent! Of course it is not your fault: it arrived in Turin 2 days later. But our postman was ill and his substitute did not take it at my home (and yet they have an official car!).

I had read it many years ago and was very fond of it. Now I shall read it again (in English, now). Many thanks

3.0 out of 5 stars Calamity Jane: too naive a story., 24 Dec. 2012

Calamity Jane: only when she finally dresses as a woman (a lady) people around her see what she actually is. Not a too interesting story.

A very strange story where a dead lady uses the house in Cornwall just bought by a man and his sister. Interesting final unexpected result that I shall not reveal. All in all a film that can be seen. First movie about a dead person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Story of an irish man who betrays his great friend to buy the passage to America., 24 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Informer [DVD] (DVD)
The story is old (1937 I think) but very interesting. It starts by an irishman who is a great friend of an important outlaw on whose head stands a reward of 20 pounds. The man is a simpleton, and easily drunk: he would like to get to America with his girl/prostitute and reveals to the police where the man hides in. However he squanders the money, is caught and killed by his ex-friends.
