Unfortunately this recording needs reengineering badly, being an old recording.I never noticed it was the Gala label until after the fact. It comes typically with lots of stage noise and the sound is far from ideal.
Could need some "doctoring".

Too bad, this is as all Mascagni, beautiful music, but unfortunately this live recording is technically poor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable listening for organ fans, 21 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A composer not so known, but nonetheless worth a listen. There is nothing really spectacular on this CD, but fans of J.S. Bach and Buxtehude will enjoy this CD, which technically is top rate. The label Brilliant is worth a look and slowly digging into the market of less known composers and music, just as they are re-issuing older recordings from other labels....and on top of that : budget price! Have a look at brilliantclassics.com

5.0 out of 5 stars A musical delight from a composer emerging from oblivion, 18 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There is not much on the market out there from Von Flotow's hand other than his two equally recommendable operas Martha and Alessandro Stradella. On this CD we get a treat in the form of two wonderful piano concertos and some incidental music as a filler. Indeed very tuneful, pleasing music that goes in without too much "work". Likewise you get an extremely audiophile rendition with the Pilsen Philharmonic. Denifinitely worth a listen, and hopefully more will come our way from this almost forgotten composer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Danish choral singing at its best, 14 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a wonderful recording of some of the most beautiful singing from the Danish "Golden Age", that I hope will get out to a much wider audience. Unknown to many Denmark probably has one of the richest song traditions in the world thanks to some wonderful poets that was more than able to catch the flavour of everything Danish (like for instance H.C.Andersen but many ,many others as well)....on top of that Denmark is blessed with a wealth of little known composers that deserve much more recognition internationally. Of course Carl Nielsen is well known today (although it took a long time). But further names well worth a listen are Peter Heise, Emil Hornemann, Lange-Müller, J.P.E. Hartmann, Niels W. Gade, Emil Hartmann, Schierbeck, Ludolf Nielsen and many more...Not to forget a long list of modern composers not belonging to above era.
And by the way , look up Heise's opera "King and Marshall" ( "Drot og Marsk").....it has got some excellent well deserved reviews as well.
I should also mention that this selection of songs is conducted by the highly acclaimed Michael Schønwandt and also that the recording quality is superb as always on Dacapo.

5.0 out of 5 stars You are in for a real treat!, 20 Aug. 2014

Schierbeck is no house hold name even in his native Denmark. Here a few people will mainly know him for his beautiful songs. However also from his hand there are a few choral works and a symphony well worth a listen. He gave up law studies and took up lessons in composition from Carl Nielsen and Ludolf Nielsen (no connection between the two), both excellent instrumentalists of their day . Schierbeck must have been a very attentive student which reflects in his own great instrumental skills.
Fete Galante premiered at Royal Theatre in Copenhagen in 1931 and taken off again after only 7 performances. One can only wonder why, since this opera is a delightful, sparkling work that moves along at a fast easy going pace a la Rosenkavalier, but without all the talk. The performance is top with the creme de la creme of Danish musical life: Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Michael Schoenwandt, Bo Skovhus etc. ......definitely an overlooked gem.
The opera is sung in the Danish language, however an English translation of the libretto ( librettist: Max Lobedanz) is included.
My hope is that this recording will appeal to everybody, including the ones who like to listen to less known or neglected music.

2.0 out of 5 stars Long, long and boring....., 11 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It might have been Rimski's own favorite of his operas all right.....certainly not my pick amongst several I have listened to.Mind you, when it comes to operas, I am not much into librettos but only into the music and voices, its tunefulness and how it pleases my ear, and I find this opera lacking a great deal in that respect. I fully agree with the former reviewer that this performance is moving forward at a very uninspiring pace, although I find, that I generally have had quite good and enjoyable experiences with the Sofia team. I am usually not into highlight CDs either, but I could go for the exception in this case, as there are some enjoyable moments that could easily fit into one good CD. I simply find ,that on the 3 CDs there is to much "nothing stuff". However that said, I will still give this opera a chance or two to possibly "sink in".

2.0 out of 5 stars recording technique bad, 15 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Just donated this rendition to Salivation Army's thrift shop and ordered a different recording, which I hope will justify this wonderful canatata. The problem is , that this is a live recording, which does not neccesarily exclude it from my repertoire, but here there seems to be some grave misplacement of microphones. The orchestra and choir come across just fine , but not the soloists and in particular the poor soprano is far too close to the microphone, and her voice is loud and shrill beyond imagination, so with headphones on you are in for an headachy experience, which is too bad as I have no complaints about all the rest of it.
