3.0 out of 5 stars at times enjoyable and gets it right, 1 Jan 2014
This review is from: Before Midnight [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
I enjoyed all three films, but definitely the best one for me was the second one, I felt like in "midnight" Celine comes off as a little too extreme and irrational, playing into the "spitfire" sexy woman stereotype (think Penelope cruz), and definitely her character does explore the frustration that I think many women have and the dilemmas and insecurities that are more acute as they age and have to juggle family life with their own aspirations (like her songwriting, or job opportunities). The problem I felt here was that I felt she was a little too explosive and cold and the argument in the hotel room was just too long and theatrical (twice walking out). I guess that has always been in her character, and in that sense she is a believable character, she thrives on creating drama, and has an internal fight between wanting to be a feminist and wanting love and to be sexy and valued by men. I guess Jesse is more sympathetic cause he is the more sweet and rational one of the two, but I do like the way that they dont portray a woman as one dimensional, she speaks her mind, swears, gets angry, gets sad, attacks when wanting to defend, and generally goes crazy cause she knows most of what Jesse says is right, but it would have been nice if she wasnt so extreme. Nicely observed and done in the film that she herself almost self consciously acts out the role of the explosive french bombshell, but underneath fears that she is losing her looks and that while Jesse is known as the great romantic hero, she will fade into the background. On the whole I did enjoy the film, but there were parts I felt were very contrived (the dinner table scene) and parts of the argument.

I havent got this one, but I got another version, and it did help (in conjunction with other coldsore creams) in preventing the cold sore. The blister disappeared :D The problem is is sometimes you dont feel the tingling phase, and then it's too late..

Coming Clean: Breaking America's Addiction to Oil and Coal
Coming Clean: Breaking America's Addiction to Oil and Coal
by Michael Brune
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.27

5.0 out of 5 stars a huge eye opener, filled with interesting background on our situation today, 11 April 2009
This is a must read. I have been trying to get everyone I know to read this, it's simply superb, written clearly, in an approachable and sensible style. It fills you in on how mining is done, how damaging it is to our ecosystems, and how inefficient it is as a form of energy, and real issues we face in todays society, with the race for oil and declining supplies and growing population and consumption.
It also has a fantastic index of organisations that can inform you more on the issues of energy and how you can reduce your carbon footprint.

4.0 out of 5 stars a journey through music, 11 April 2009
This review is from: No Line On The Horizon (Audio CD)
This is the type of CD that is a grower. There are some amazing moments, in fact "moment of surrender" leaves you speechless, and other tunes like magnificent and 'I'll go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight" inject a nice mix. The production is just fabulous. u2 have never been a group to recycle old ideas and this proves that they continue with a passion for music. That said, it isnt my favorite album, and for me "How to dismantle an atomic bomb" and "all that you can't leave behind" would still be my desert island disc favorites.

Fantasia O Realidad
Fantasia O Realidad

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Romantic Pop Songs, 10 Jun 2005
This review is from: Fantasia O Realidad (Audio CD)
Any one who likes romantic songs and heartfelt lyrics with a traditional guitar sound, suprisingly raw for this age of synthesised pop music, will enjoy this album. The tunes are catchy (but not bubblegum or desperately repetitive). Sin Miedo de Nada is an epic tune - which he then recorded with the Oreja de Van Gogh. "Dame tu Aire" and "Aunque no te pueda ver" and "Gritos de Esperanza" are other highlights, though it is hard to pick out the best as they are all great tunes soulfully sung. I can't wait to hear the next album from him.

4.0 out of 5 stars unusual, worth the effort, 9 Jun 2005
This book is written for the most part in the form of a diary of the courageous, mysterious, but 'spunky' Helen. The novel is essentially a story of society in the 19th century, virtue vs evil, religion, feminism, and true love. It involves the reader wholly in Helen's plight and sustains suspense in what she will do and her motives. For those who object to whimsy female characters, this is certainly the book for you. It is really only partly spoilt at the very end by the textbook happy ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars eclectic, captivating vocals, fascinating mixes., 9 Jun 2005
This album, unlike so many others really is a progression from her other stuff. Never someone to stick with a successful formula, or rest on her laurels, Shakira has come up with this wonderfully diverse album, which though short, emcompasses a plethora of moods, of musical styles, and as ever incredible vocal ability. At times you are transported to an almost an indiginous or raw Andean chant, blended with African acapella, through to European, 20s style. Ranging from touching girliness and vulnerability of her lyrics and voice to haunting power, passion and fire which reaches to your centre, her vocals genuinely filled with emotion, combined with her immense musical capability continue to amaze.

5.0 out of 5 stars very emotive, 12 Dec 2003
This is a wonderful concert, it shows Shakira at her most passionate about what she does - she sings her heart out and has incredible stage presence. If you've only seen the Whenever Wherever video, this will suprise you. Still very sexy, this shows her latin and very musical roots.

4.0 out of 5 stars a compelling read, 29 Nov 2003
This book is very user friendly and the type of dramatic realism that can't fails to grasp one's attention. From the outset the reader is embroiled in the grim cirmcumstances of the protagonist, but the author does not paint his protagonist as either a hero or a victim keeping the book nicely neutral for the reader to make their conclusions from the hard-hitting storyline.
