5.0 out of 5 stars Hope when all seems hopeless, 5 Oct. 2012
I was drawn to this book when I first saw the cover. Three words in the title sent special messages to me...Psalms - a book of comfort, praise and adoration; sunrise - thoughts of a bright new day overflowing with hope.
I love the treatment author Bob Saffrin uses in presenting some of the most favourite words of scripture as contained in the book of Psalms, all with the theme of hope. As I read through the various chapters, the feeling of resting in the unending love of the Creator, with expectations that He will act in my behalf in any and all circumstances pervaded. Personal experiences backed up by scriptural references confirming that there is a way out of every situation.
This is a carry in your bag or pocket or your reading device kind of book. There for ready reference and for booster shots whenever a big dose of hope is needed.
I was tempted to rush through the pages, but slowed down so as to fully engage with the thoughts the author was sharing.
A recommended read for all ages and all seasons.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to dance with happiness and joy, 4 Oct. 2012
How to books abound. Sifting through the many, many books that vie for my reading attention and making a choice is not easy. Having made my choice and read the book, the feeling that I made a good choice is one that I cherish. It means that I will remember the story, the facts, or the study of that book. I will most likely refer to it from time to time, quote parts of it and share it with others. Hola Happiness: Finding Joy by Dancing to the Melody of God's Word is one of those books.

As I read each section I kept thinking that I must remember this for later and that one for such and such, and realised that I probably wanted to memorise the entire book. Not hard to do as it is a short, easy to read gem. In the end I found that the section on Acceptance resonated most with me because experientially I had reached a place of acceptance in my life which freed me to be able to tackle life with a new zest and enthusiasm. And this is what each section of this wonderful book will do for its readers.

Joyfully and sensitively written, Ms Eckles has written another stunning book of encouragement, hope and yes, joy.

I heartily recommend this book for readers of all ages.

A Christian Woman's Guide to Breaking Free from Pornography: It's Not Just a Guy's Problem

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth and the Facts, 18 Sept. 2012
The combination of truth and facts makes this an authentic resourceful book. The authors Hitz and Curtis have interspersed their experiences with pornography with well researched facts to substantiate their claim that women can break free from the addiction of pornography.
It cannot have been easy for these Christian ladies to bare their souls and expose their deviation from the `straight and narrow' down this alleyway of secret sin. Indeed, but for their disclosure no one need ever find out. But is that really so? From their reasoned discussion the answer is a resounding "No". They bring to readers research which show that experimentations into sexual aberrations burrow deep into the psyche and even many years later become manifest, causing dysfunction in interpersonal relationships.
A key point in the book that those engaged in these activities acknowledge that they are caught up in addiction, addiction as powerful and harmful as chemical addiction. It's not just a man thing because men are so visual, but it affects a women powerfully because the images and feelings that become aroused are implanted on the brain. As a result breaking free is difficult but possible.
This is a very readable book and should be read as widely as possible. If you've been affected, it will help you to break free. If you've never been affected, you will be forewarned so that you stay clear, and if you think it could not happen to you, you will find that it is very possible and may even discover in yourself latent desires that are triggers.
The authors are to be commended for tackling this very sensitive issue with sensitivity and skill and have written a book that could become a valuable resource for both secular and Christian counsellors.

Highly recommended.

Hanging on by the Scratch Marks My Nails Left Behind (Raw Faith)
Hanging on by the Scratch Marks My Nails Left Behind (Raw Faith)
by Elizabeth L. Chalker
Edition: Paperback
Price: £16.23

5.0 out of 5 stars Real life more grippiing than fiction, 9 Sept. 2012
I read this book with a box of tissues beside me. The tears were not for Elizabeth who has written her story in real time. They were for me, as my sorry superficial life paled in the light of her life that revealed what living for the glory of God really means. How does one suffering from Lyme Disease causing, a slow death, causing non-stop pain and agony get the discipline, the determination and the courage to focus, not on the devastation taking place in her body, but brings that body under subjection and pens a stirring story about the greatest love of her life? I have not stopped asking myself that question since I read this amazing book. It's not like any other book you will read. Indeed, Elizabeth is not the first person to go through excruciating pain and suffering. In most cases the stories end. This story does not end. Elizabeth, though she prays, no pleads with her Lord for healing and deliverance, has not been healed, nor been delivered, but her faith still holds on to the Christ of Calvary.
This is a remarkable book by a remarkable writer and deserves to be read by those who suffer as she does from chronic illness, but also by those whose lives are a romp in the park by comparison, if only to gain perspective. It is well written. I believe it should find its way to the ranks of best sellers. It would make an excellent documentary of courage, hope and inspiration.

Sassy Pants Makes Amends
Sassy Pants Makes Amends
by Carol A. Brown
Edition: Perfect Paperback
Price: £5.66

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgiveness made easy, 13 Jun. 2012
Sassy Pants Makes Amends by Carol Brown
The moment I started reading Sassy Pants Makes Amends I felt myself being transported back to my days of Beatrix Potter. There is something endearing about animal stories and Ms Brown brought a host of emotions to bear in this her second in the Sassy Pants series, bringing to life the characters in a positive and lovable manner.
Her characterization is spot on as one does not have to stretch the imagination to come up with a rude, disobedient and thoroughly obnoxious pig, whom everyone will love to dislike. After thoroughly alienating all the other farm animals with her bad behavior, in the first book, readers will welcome the complete turnaround in the heroine, Sassy Pants, as she makes amends.
Ms Brown tackles a difficult subject with a great deal of wisdom that makes this book not just a delightful read but a teaching tool for all of us who have struggled with forgiveness questions like, what is forgiveness, how does one forgive, what should my attitude be when I approach forgiveness, and not to be overlooked, how do the persons on the end of forgiveness respond. Not everyone who is hurt and is asked for forgiveness readily capitulates. Some struggle.
Sassy Pants has to face each of her former friends whom she has hurt, individually and construct a form of apology that is in line with the offense caused. By setting the plot in this way Ms Brown presents varying scenarios to help persons faced with having to say sorry with a correct way to do so. For instance in one situation Sassy Pants discovers that just apologizing is not enough and in another, asking for forgiveness should not have a qualifying statement.
As a teaching module for children, this is an exceptionally good idea. Whereas children probably find it easier to forgive and accept forgiveness, as they grow older it becomes more difficult and good grounding in this subject at an early age will reinforce the innate traits of children.
This book is written in such a manner and style that adults will find it useful in their own walk as they too face forgiveness issues. At any age, readers will understand that misspeaking, uttering hurtful words and displaying bad behavior is a common everyday occurrence. How to repair these breaches are critical and is shown in good simple, not simplistic, story form throughout the book, making it easy to assimilate and to follow along.
I highly recommend this book as essential reading for both children and adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shovel out the hurts and scrape clean the scars, 12 Jan. 2012
As I read this offering by Bob Saffrin, I saw it as an excellently written exposition on this very popular Psalm. At first I wondered how different would be his treatment from the myriad of other writings on the 23rd Psalm, because as he says in his introduction, more sermons have been preached on these verses than perhaps any other in the Bible. It is to his credit therefore that, Saffrin was able to explore the depths of the words of this Psalm in a fresh light, bringing new insights, and most of all, infusing a stream of encouraging and uplifting thoughts. The narrative is sprinkled generously with supporting scriptures to substantiate the thoughts proffered.
At first I wanted to just peruse it for interest, but as I read into it, I realised that careful time was required to experience the emotions the writer wanted to impart as well as gain the benefits from the thoughts shared. The situations explained relate to today's rough tempestuous life and the solutions are practical. Whether you are a Christian or of no religion, after reading this book you will come away with a sense of having stumbled upon a formula for surviving the shockwaves of this life. If you are experiencing feelings of lostness, hopelessness and despair, read this book for the upliftment, encouragement and sustenance that you crave.
Saffrin writes fluently in an engaging style and I highly recommend this as a must read, not only once, but on a regular basis.

Gold Earrings
Gold Earrings
by Diane E. Tatum
Edition: Perfect Paperback
Price: £12.59

5.0 out of 5 stars Colourful characters, vividly described, 2 Nov. 2011
This review is from: Gold Earrings (Perfect Paperback)
Diane Tatum's novel, Gold Earrings has got to be rated as a beautifully written historical classic. My sense as I read the book was that the author had done careful research and so the descriptions of the locations and the situations came across as very authentic. The result was a cast of colourful characters, vividly described and so real, I felt that I had been transported back to that period and was a spectator on the sidelines watching the scenes unfold.
A story meant to be distinctly Christian, has its principal character Angelina being cast as the illegitimate daughter of a bordello madame and an Italian sea captain, born into conservative Boston society. Our heroine becomes increasingly aware that her heritage and habitation are liabilities, when compared with the values she learnt from her godfather/guardian, an eminent pastor. Yearning to be free of her tainted past, one filled with memories of a near rape by one of her mother's patrons, Angelina is more than delighted to become the charge of a small town minister, in the conservative town of St Joseph, with the offer of accommodation and work, albeit on a very probationary basis.
There is instant attraction between Jonathan, the minister of the church in St Joseph and Angelina, but as the story enfolds, it becomes clear that this is not going to be a short, `they lived happily ever after tale'. Jonathan has to convince the wild and loose daughter of his patron that he is serious that he no longer wants to make a life with her, overcome hurts of the past that holds him back from a full surrender to the growing love her feels for Angelina, and more importantly, come to grips with Angelina's heritage, which has become public knowledge and seems to make her an unsuitable match for a minister of religion.
This touching love story gives credence to the fact that true love never runs smoothly, while pointing the reader to the powerful reality of forgiveness and its healing power.
I got so caught up in the story I was unable to put it down and read it in almost one sitting. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it as appropriate family reading.

Fit for Faith - 7 weeks to improved spiritual and physical health
Fit for Faith - 7 weeks to improved spiritual and physical health
Price: £4.54

5.0 out of 5 stars A winning combination, 1 Sept. 2011
Fit for Faith is a book whose time has come and one which is sure to become a must have for anyone who has ever thought of embarking on a change of lifestyle and not known where to start, or more importantly, how to undertake it successfully and in an orderly manner.
In her remarkable how-to book, Kimberley Payne has detailed a seven week step-by-step, holistic programme encompassing diet, exercise and faith in God divided in two parts along with appendices of exercises and tips. The first section sets out a detailed healthy lifestyle programme - a variety of exercises, their frequency and duration; food and drink choices and suggested eating strategies for best results. Great emphasis is placed on the importance of invoking God's guidance and help throughout, noting that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
The second section is a 49 day workbook, bookended with a prayer at the start of each day and a relevant verse of scripture to close. The recordings of the exercises undertaken, healthy food choices and a point for reflection, seemed designed to be the person's accountability partner, not leaving any room for exclusion of the day's routine.
Payne is no doubt passionate that every person who reads her book and takes up its challenge will come away spiritually and physically healthier and to this end she has included in a handy easy to follow manual, all that is necessary to achieve these goals.
If there are books you must have at all times, this is sure to be one of them, not as a casual read but as a guide to achieving spiritual and physical well being and a ready reckoner for maintenance at the end of the seven week programme.
