4.0 out of 5 stars Great Device, 17 May 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
You pay a bit of a premium but the Scholl Express Pedi is 10 times better than any manual skin remover you'll find. You can feel and see the benefits in almost no time at all.

The only downside is that the rollers need replacing. I'm not sure exactly how long the rollers are meant to last - I'll bet you can get a fair bit of use out of them - but, given the price you've paid, you can feel rightfully aggrieved to have to buy replacements.

Overall, this is a great piece of kit for anyone who suffers from dry, calloused feet or who just want to keep their skin smooth.

Oh Dear Silvia
Oh Dear Silvia

2.0 out of 5 stars Dead as a Doornail, 11 May 2013
This review is from: Oh Dear Silvia (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Dawn French has a great concept. Silvia lies in hospital in a coma. Her family and 'friends' come to visit her and, whilst sitting with her, recall old memories and reveal their inner secrets. Their lives have all been influenced by Silvia in one way or another and we learn more and more about their pasts as the visit count increases.

The problem is that the story and the way it's told just isn't very good. The story is neither funny, dramatic, romantic or poignant. It sometimes tries to be all at once and normally fails. It's characters are dull - as Silvia thought of some of them herself when she was alive and well - or just downright annoying. The characterisation and accent of Winnie, Silvia's caring nurse, teeters from stereotypical to a wee bit racist. The story development is slow, some of the hospital visits are the same or similar to those which preceded them. That may be representative of real life but an exciting book it does not make.

It was a real struggle to get through. Only in the final few chapters did the book pick up a bit and become a tiny bit compelling. Then it was over. The resolution was minimal, the final reaction 'meh'. Rest in peace.

Pitch Perfect (Blu-ray + Digital Copy + UV Copy) [2012]
Pitch Perfect (Blu-ray + Digital Copy + UV Copy) [2012]
Dvd ~ Anna Kendrick
Price: £7.10

4.0 out of 5 stars Pitch (Almost) Perfect, 24 April 2013

I honestly didn't know what to expect when I went to see Pitch Perfect in the cinema. I'd heard it described as the latest 'Bridesmaids' and I absolutely hated that film! I am happy to report that it was nothing like 'Bridesmaids' - it's funny, outrageous, sexy, musical fun. It's Glee on steroids.

There's hardly a character not to like. They all have strong, normally funny, personalities and despite the ridiculousness of some scenes you can easily believe college life really can be this insane. The acting is top notch - Anna Kendrick and every single member of her acapela group 'The Barden Bellas' are brilliant - and the singing talent is good too. Perfect toe-tapping entertainment!

Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 Power Select Razor
Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 Power Select Razor
Offered by UK Pharmacy Direct
Price: £9.88

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Good Vibrations, 18 Mar. 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have used a Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 razor for quite a few months now - I find the blades far better than the Gillette ProGlide razor and the hydrating strip and cushion along the bottom are better as well. I've never really bought into the 'power' razors before but thought it was worth giving it a go. Unfortunately, after three shaves I haven't noticed any improvement in the quality of the shave.

The first problem with this razor is that the hydrating strip seems different to that on the normal blades and it seems to react with my shaving cream to become too wet, giving the shave no traction and requiring me to go over the same spot a few times. This can probably be fixed by reverting to the normal blades, which can be used with this razor.

However, the second and much more significant problem is that I simply can't tell what difference the vibration makes... except to make my hand less steady. Let's be honest, shaving is enough of a chore to begin with and having your hand buzzing away doesn't really make the job any easier.

I don't think a 'power' razor is any substitute for a good pre-shave cleanser and a shaving brush, which should be all you need to get a good shave. Save some money and go for the ordinary Hydro razor.

2.0 out of 5 stars Weak, 26 Jan. 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I'll never understand critics' needs to give these sorts of film such high praise. Okay, so it's 'real' and 'raw' and 'original' but that doesn't necessarily mean its good to watch. There's no denying the acting skills of the young actress who portrays Hushpuppy and the production values - the movie could almost be a documentary (except for the random bits with the weird beasts) - but that's not enough to make it entertaining.

The film tells the story of Hushpuppy, a young girl who's part of a part-feral bayou tribe of people living in a place called 'Bathtub', which funnily enough is susceptible to flooding as a result of the melting of the ice caps. When the flooding comes, they have to try to survive without outside help.

At least, I think that's pretty much what the movie is about. The direction of the film, with almost constant flicking from one event to the next, makes it difficult to know for sure. Even if the direction was more steady and the plot more linear, I don't think I would enjoy the movie any more.

Your Sister's Sister [DVD]
Your Sister's Sister [DVD]
Dvd ~ Emily Blunt
Price: £7.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Stuff, 26 Jan. 2013
This review is from: Your Sister's Sister [DVD] (DVD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This film starts of in a pretty uncomfortable way and is slow to get going. When it does finally find its feet, it's a touching, sincere and emotionally heavy story about the bond of brotherhood, sisterhood and love.

In a nutshell, Jack has lost his brother and his best friend Iris lets him stay in her family retreat. He arrives to find her sister Hannah is already there and when Iris arrives the next day, things get pretty complicated but (after about 10 minutes of near to no dialogue) everyone learns to move on.

Your Sister's Sister is a short, simple and sweet movie. It won't be to everyone's tastes but is well worth a watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent Bit of Kit, 4 Dec. 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Battery powered grooming kits are usually pretty good as nose, ear or eyebrow trimmers but not so good as clippers for longer hair. The good news is that the clippers on the Remington grooming kit work quite well - it did a great job at tidying up the back of my hair, which had got quite long.

There are two downsides to the product that I've come across so far. First, the batteries won't last long with prolonged use. When trimming the back of my head, you could hear the power lagging after a minute or two. The second is that the attachment for nose/eyebrows hair isn't very good for the nose.

Still, this is a good all-around piece of kit for your basic grooming needs.

Belkin Cover Shield Case for iPhone 5 and 5s - Clear
Belkin Cover Shield Case for iPhone 5 and 5s - Clear

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple & Effective, 26 Nov. 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
There are so many covers, cases, folios and wallets for iPhones nowadays but the big problem with most of them is that they hide away the sleek design of the phone you've paid so much for.

The Belkin Shield Case is made of translucent plastic, allowing the beauty of the iPhone to (almost) shine through. It is probably a little more hazy than it could be and is definitely not completely 'clear' as the description suggests. Still, it's a good option if you don't want your iPhone covered up by the usual brightly coloured and floral design cases.

There isn't much material to the case - it's essentially just the back and little bits around the side - so I'm not sure how much protection it would offer if you dropped the phone. At least it should offer good protection against normal bangs and scrapes.

Given how little there is to it, I'm not sure £13.00 is justifiable but if you want a simple, clear case which allows you to bask in the shiny magnificence of your iThing then this is a good option.

The Taliban Cricket Club
The Taliban Cricket Club
by Timeri N. Murari
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, 9 Nov. 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I wasn't quite sure what to expect with 'The Taliban Cricket Club' but thoroughly enjoyed the read! The book is a work of fiction based in Afghanistan during the rule of the Taliban, a time of terrible oppression in the country. In order to boost their international image, the Taliban submit the county for associate status with the International Cricket Council and arrange a tournament, where the winning team will get the opportunity to train in Pakistan. The main character, Rukhsana, and her brother and cousins establish a team in an attempt to escape the county and live better lives elsewhere.

That is a central story but to its immense credit, The Taliban Cricket Club is actually about so much more than a cricket tournament. The writing is strong and the characters are real, believable and either highly likeable or highly detestable. Although fictional, the writer has clearly gone to great lengths to research how Afghanistan was during this time, giving the reader a compelling expose of life for the ordinary person in Kabul. Even so, the story is not too heavy or upsetting and strikes a good balance between drama, humour and romance.

My only gripe would be that I thought the ending came about too suddenly and, relative to the gradual build-up which had come before, was too abrupt. I also would have loved to have read more about the characters' lives after the events of the story. Still, The Taliban Cricket Club is a unique, interesting, pleasant read and I would highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disney at its best, 6 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A few of the most recent Disney blu-ray releases - The Rescuers, 101 Dalmations, Aristocats amongst them - have got bad reviews for less than pristine blu-ray transfers. Whilst I agree that the video on those releases wasn't close to Disney's best, I think the cause was more the era those classics originate from (cheap 'rough-pencil' era) than Disney's blu-ray conversion.

The good news is that, as an older movie from Mr Walt Disney's time at the helm, Peter Pan is a beautifully drawn animation movie and the blu-ray transfer is absolutely stunning and looks as though it was drawn yesterday. The colour is clear and vibrant and there is no noticeable blurring or distortion. The sound is equally majestic and the surround sound is brilliant, particularly for the background music.

The even better news is that Peter Pan is one of Disney's best classics, with a great story, fun characters, a brilliant larger-than-life villain and more than a few laughs! This is one of Disney's absolute must have blu-ray releases!
