2.0 out of 5 stars Too long, too boring, 27 Mar 2014
This review is from: The Great Gatsby (Blu-ray)
Love Leo in pretty much anything, but this was a style over substance adaptation. Looked good, but nothing special. There really wasn't a good enough reason to remake this self-indulgent story anyway, and this added nothing. Not for me. Sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a truly special film, 22 Mar 2014
My first concern about this film was the 3 hours of subtitles I'd have to manage. If this film hadn't won the Palme d'Or and had such rave reviews I might not have bothered and then missed out on a piece of special film making. Both actresses were excellent, the acting was raw, emotional and utterly believable.

Everyone seems obsessed by the sex scenes, and yes they were explicit and steamy, but they weren't over the top. It's hardly pornographic.....if you think so then you really need to get out a bit more. The hardest scenes to watch were filled with emotional turmoil and desperation, again acted wonderfully by the two leads. The human condition and the pain and joy of relationships is expertly woven together in this film, the director got it spot on.

Give this film a chance. The actresses deserve that. It will be a classic one day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly brilliant film, 16 Mar 2014
I'm not sure what I expected when we added this film to our watchlist on Amazon Prime video. It had a few of things going for it, the actors for one, Glenn Close, Janet McTeer, etc. Also being set in a difficult, hard time in Ireland's history it sounded like a really interesting concept. I don't think I've seen a film as well acted, as sensitively handled or as authentic as this in a long time. Glenn Close is excellent, such an understated portrayal of a quiet, lonely man, the greatest praise I can give is that I forgot it was her most of the time. For me though the real star was Janet McTeer, a towering, bruiser of bloke with a big heart, again beautifully played. Bravo ladies.

I total recommend this film and will certainly watch it again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Started good.....got too silly, 15 Mar 2014
This review is from: Filth (Blu-ray)
I really, really wanted to like this, you know, like all the cool kids. Thing is it started well in a scary and violent way, but it was interesting so I watched on. As the lead character, Bruce gets nastier and madder the film loses it's cohesion and it gets harder to watch. Not at all a bad film but not really for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another corker by one of my favourite authors, 14 Mar 2014

I caught up on this author's book quite recently and totally fell in love with them. She writes engaging characters in interesting situations, not the usual paint by numbers les-fic, for this she should be praised, then for the books to have a great sense of humour, again, praise be.

I would urge you to read this book and Rain Falls, but in the right order obviously! They are both entertaining, warm and clever. What more could you want?

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than I thought, but a bit long and drawn out, 9 Mar 2014
This review is from: The Mortal Instruments (Blu-ray)
Didn't know much about the film and could see it's got middling reviews, but thought it might be worth a spin, especially as there are sequels already planned. Clary was well played by Lily Collins, just the right amount of scared and kickass. Jace is a great character and I enjoyed the one-liners which is a blessing really as Jamie Campbell Bower has the charisma of a brick. And even though I cannot stand Robert Sheehan in anything I've seen him in he was actually bearable...especially when he was tied up and quiet.

Generally a decent film and a good filler for a Sunday evening, well it was this or Crufts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much, much better than expected, 7 Mar 2014
This review is from: Elysium (Blu-ray)
Thoroughly enjoyed this film. Some proper edge of seat stuff, plus a real message for the future. Matt Damon was good value as a doomed hard-man and Sharlto Copley plays 'heartless' mercenary to perfection. Jodie Foster is a tour de force, she's single minded in her protection of Elysium and you can really believe she would stop at nothing.

Special effects are just 'good enough', not over the top or massively relied upon. Story is interesting, but not exactly strong.

There's obvious parallels between District 9 and anything else where apartheid is a theme, but they don't detract from the film as a piece of entertainment, and if anything add to it.

2.0 out of 5 stars How can such a good cast make such a duff movie?, 2 Mar 2014
This review is from: Admission (Blu-ray)
No I don't know either but they managed it some how. I love Tina Fey and Paul Rudd, chuck in a bit of Lily Tomlin and Michael Sheen and what have you got? A complete waste of talent, that's what.

The story starts slow and stays slow. There are some funny bits, some shiny bits of solo brilliance, but these aren't enough to hold the rest of the plot together. As usual anyone with a British accent is either bad or untrustworthy - and gosh isn't that film device a bit worn out now?

Anyway, this is a waste of good acting talent and that's a sad thing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh good grief what a wasted opportunity, 28 Feb 2014
This review is from: Jack and Diane (DVD)
You've got a very charismatic lead in Riley Keough. You've got Kylie Minogue all tattooed up and sleazy. You've got Juno Temple....ahhh, well I guess you can't have it all....But anyway, this film is a finding yourself, teenage lesbian angst, first love type affair which in itself might be a good film, but there is just too little going on and strangeness. I've watched the film and still don't get the strangeness, just sort of growling, hair and blood. It adds nothing to the film, but manages to make it disjointed and stilted.

Ms Keough as Jack is very convincing. Ms Temple is predictably annoying. Ms Minogue is Ms Minogue, and generally if she were only on film breaking wind it would still be watchable, just.

This film is not good, it starts ok, the middle is lacking and the end couldn't come soon enough. A waste of a film, a waste of the actors talents, and a waste of my time. Boo film-maker boo.

Ok, let's talk about the elephant in the room. This book has nookie in it. Oh yes. Great nookie. It's not all left to your imagination it's out there, good and proper, and I loved it. This story is the next installment of the Phoebe and JoBeth books, or as I like to call them Posh Bird and Papergirl. I've enjoyed all these books for lots of reasons, but this one was a bit of a departure from the crime novels. This book centered very much on the relationship of the two women with any sort of mystery being more of a side dish.

I liked this book because it felt honest. There are 'bedroom issues' discussed, and these are issues I've read about in gay magazines, they are real issues....and that's great. Just because the issues are a bit saucy I'm sure people will be slightly put off, but don' be, it's just being honest.

Well you get my drift, I loved the book. I enjoyed the sex scenes and I felt the pain and the shame that went with the healing. It's a really good book and I thoroughly recommend it.

Thank heavens for books like this...please write more....with the nookie.....thanks.
