Titanic Performances!, 22 Nov 2009
Oleg Marshev's keybord prowess can be compared with the Russian Titans like Richter, Horowitz, Gilels, Berman and Gavrilov. Most of his Danacord recordings are technically staggering, artistically outstanding, and extremely exciting. Sheer intensity of his playing and his uncompromising pianism reminds me Sviatoslav Richter, for his intellectual grasp of structure and his daring, risk-taking approach. This Rachmaninov recording is no exception. Both sonata and corelli variations display his mature artistry, wide range of tonal gradation and dazzling virtuosity.

Titanic Survey of Prokofiev's Complete Solo Piano Works, 22 Nov 2009
Oleg Marshev's keybord prowess can be compared with the Russian Titans like Richter, Horowitz, Gilels, Berman and Gavrilov. All five volumes of his Prokofiev piano music recordings are technically staggering, artistically outstanding, and extremely exciting. Sheer intensity of his playing, displayed in Sonatas, is just overwhelming. Each volume contains, alongside Sonatas, less known gems and unique solo piano masterpieces played with the same dazzling and uncompromising pianism, which reminds me Sviatoslav Richter, for his intellectual grasp of structure and his daring, risk-taking approach. Undoubtedly finest modern recordings of complete piano music of Prokofiev. A must-buy for anyone after serious art of piano playing!
Hightlight of volume 3 is the incredibly exciting, incandescent performance of 3rd and 5th Sonata. Other miniature works display Marshev's maturity as an artist, his stunning dexterity and wide range of tonal gradation.

Hightlight of volume one is the powerful and incendescent performance 7th Sonata. I haven't come across more exciting performance of the sonata since Richter's Soviet era recording in the 50s. 6th is also very impressive if not as intensely charged as Richter's accounts. Visison fugitives and Dumka display Marshev's maturity as an artist and his wide range of tonal gradation.

The highlight of the volume 5 is the belief-defying account of Toccata and the thrillingly delicate and profound performance of 9th Sonata. Katsaris' live recoring of Toccata is much faster (in fact fastest on record), but Marshev's reading leaves you breathless as he brings out the detail of this ingenious work like no other pianists.
Rarely performed 4 Etudes, 2 Sonatinas, 5 Sarcasms are wonderful fillers, played with amazing dexterity and breath taking tonal shading.

Hightlight of volume 3 is the astoundingly electrifying performance of 2nd and 4th Sonata. The 2nd Sonata particularly is one of the most exciting performnces on record alongside Richter's live accounts. Other miniture works, written in a typical condensed and provocative style, display Marshev's maturity as an artist, his stunning dexterity and wide range of tonal gradation. Suggestition diabolique is incredibly daring and matches Richter's Tokyo live account in intensity.

Refined & Glowing Performance!, 22 Nov 2009
This is a wonderfully refined performance of Elgar's Piano Quintet, played by Nash Ensemble with breath taking subtlety, imagination and much Elgarian yearning. Piano is perfectly balanced with strings and they produce vivid and glowing timbre. Violin Sonata is played a bit too fast for my taste, but equally fine performance.

Utterly gripping & heaven-bound 2nd, 21 Nov 2009
This is the less known 1968 stereo recording of the 2nd, conducted by Haitink, with Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Elly Ameling and Aafje Heynis as soprano and contralto. 1st movement is one of the most gripping and powerful performances I've ever come across. 2nd and 3rd movement is beautifully crafted and wonderfully vibrant with surprising detail brought forward. Urlicht is deeply moving and warmly expressive without the operatic nonesense which mars so many of other performances. Ameling's ethereal singing, in the last movement, adds to the noble beauty of Haitink's reading. The final apotheosis is not as powerful as Klemperer's classic account, neither as apocalyptic as Stokowski's outrageously gigantic Prom live performance, yet very profound with the sense of serene fulfillment. While achieving maximum impact in every crucial climax throughout the whole symphony, Haitink never seems to lose the overall perspective and the heaven-ward vision of the music. A very satisfying performance indeed!
