5.0 out of 5 stars Up there with the blues greats, 25 May 2014

The guitar playing & vocals are stunning.
If you are not hooked or touched by Motherless Chile Blues then you have truly sold your soul to the devil. It is one of the GREAT blues tracks.

3.0 out of 5 stars not sure yet, 25 Mar. 2009
This review is from: Dark Days/Light Years (Audio CD)
Have only listened to this twice so far, and not quite sure what to make of it.Have been a huge fan of this band since the outset, and of course they are never predictable, but whereas earlier flirtations with the crossover between rock/pop & dance/trance worked - especially on Slow Life from Phantom Power - not sure whether some of the tracks on this do, the exception being Cardiff In The Sun. Crazy Naked Girls, Inaugural Trams & The Very Best Of Neil Diamond certainly at this stage don't, for want of a better expression, cut it for me - too much of Neon Neon influence. But love, how can you not, Mt, Inconvenience (could be from RATW), Lliwau lacher (Mwng period) & White Socks/Flip Flops.Maybe it's that I'm getting too old & don't like change. Open verdict at the moment, hopefully it'll be a grower, their stuff normally is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should have been his first solo album, 8 Jan. 2009
Neil has frequently said he hated the production on his eponymous debut & hearing the tracks from that on this CD you understand why. Stripped down to their basics - along with glorious acoustic versions of Buffalo Springfield's best - they sound so much better. As with Massey Hall, the release of which was jettisoned in favour of Harvest, this should be "Neil Young". Ok so it's one for purists/completists but with the exception of The Old Laughing Lady all of the tracks are better than what appeared on vinyl 40 years ago

3.0 out of 5 stars like any best of ....., 7 Aug. 2008
what's the point of best of albums - particularly when they are not a single based band - see Frank Black.OK the artists choice is interesting but it is never what you would choose yourself. Fair enough if you can't be bothered to buy all their albums then get this - which at least means you are listening to decent stuff. But who has'nt got Deserter's Songs & if not why not ?? I love this band but please get all their albums !!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars not their best but well worth getting, 29 May 2008
This review is from: El Rey (Audio CD)
Previous reviewers seem to have given this 5 stars simply because it is a Wedding Present album - a sentiment I whole heartedly concur with as everything Gedge does is in my opinion fantastic. However this album can not be compared to George Best - they have not used "jingly jangly" guitar sound since ... well George Best - nor can it be compared to Seamonsters - their classic/greatest album. At best it is on a par with Saturnalia & Cinerama's Torino. Not as good as Take Fountain but it will still be one of my favourite albums of the year. Boo Boo is the standout track - the Click Click / Don't Touch That Dial of the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars For eels fans only, 19 Feb. 2008
The versions of novocaine & the live version of "I like birds" make this a must for eels fans. The greatest hits CD is contentious but this is very interesting, even when it doess'nt work. For eels fan only but there are a good 10 or so tracks that make it worth buying, even if you haven't got all they've ever done !

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Harvest, 14 Nov. 2007
It knocks spots off Harvest - this is the album that should have been released in 1972. For any Young follower this is a must have, & will already have. The fact that most of the songs are unknown by the audience adds an extra dimension. Has his voice ever sounded this good. Dlving into the world of shakey it does'nt get much better than this. Roll on the archives!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A welcome relief from his descent into country, 17 Sept. 2007
This review is from: Bluefinger (Audio CD)
Don't get me wrong, I love Honeycomb & Fast Man... (it would have been a great single album) but this is definately a return to a form. It's the heaviest thing he's done since Devil's Worshop, but it's still not a Pixies album, it's a Frank Black album - nothing wrong with that !!! I agree with other reviewers Threshold is the stand out track - part early Stranglers anyone ? Perhaps working with new musicians has reinvigorated him - this is not a & Catholics album. He is turning into the new Neil Young - on all the positive fronts, in other words you don't know which genre is going to dominate the next album & he's good enough at all of them to make it interesting !! What I can't understand is why none of the quality papers have even mentioned this album. The converted will already have this, if you're not sure get it - the man is a genius and THE most influential person still doing something interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A grower, 31 Aug. 2007
This review is from: Hey Venus! (Audio CD)
Before Love Kraft I believe they improved with every album, so far (4 listens)& they have got back on track, this ranks with Rings as probably the 2nd best thing they've done. They have never done a dud album, everything they do is worth listening to, even if sometimes it does'nt quite work - & live they are absolutely stunning!! For me Suckers is the stand out track, but then I'm a Demons/Bleed Forever/Carry The Can man ! If the best bits were combined with Gruff's solo album you would have the album of the year without a shadow of a doubt. I'm biased but a new album by SFA gets my juices flowing and over 8 albums (plus Outspaced) I've never been dissappointed. I feel they are one of those bands where regardless of reviews people will buy - purely because they are the Furries & rightly so, it's not about loyalty but about their music which is always interesting. Buy this & Candylion & create your own best album of 2007

This review is from: Icky Mettle [VINYL] (Audio CD)
Worth buying purely for Toast - if you dont like this track you dont like music. But leaving the stand out track aside the album as a whole is fantastic - a cross between grunge and heavy metal with the listener winning out.
