Peter Murphy is massively under rated. He has produced some of the best music of the last 30 years, both as part of Bauhaus and as a solo artist. The track selection included here displays the depth and strength of his back catalogue, but who recorded this? It sounds like it's been mastered from a recording captured on someone's mobile phone or a late 1980s cassette recorder. There is no real bass, the top end is splashy and indistinct and Murphy's voice is loud one minute and muffled the next. The one thing it never is, is clear. Poor quality really wrecks the recording. The great man deserves much better.

I read a review of this album and it sounded interesting. I picked up a copy and the review was wrong. This album is way more than interesting. It's truly outstanding. Shades of Tom Waits mixed with solid blues rock in amongst some catchy melodies. The band sound great and the vocals are excellent, but the songs are some of the best that I heard during 2012. This is set to be a favourite album and I keep returning to it time and again. Buy it, you'll love it.

I have many of Andrew Birds albums and while this one is a slow burn, eventually the true beauty of the music shines through. Play it once and it'll seem bland and samey. Play it a lot and it is indispensible. Give it time it'll pay you back in dividends.
