4.0 out of 5 stars If I was fluent in German I would give it five stars, 5 Mar. 2015

The book is written in German and in a style that doesn't seem very compatible with using on-line translation such as Google Translate. For example, "Am Sportplatz vorbei und hinter dem Ort durch die Felder - auf Höhe des Campingplatzes mit einer Linkskurve zur Haupstraße (6) rechts und gleich nach der Tankstelle links den Hang hinauf - durch das hübsche Örtchen Darvella hindurch." translated as "Pass the sports field and behind the village through the fields - at the level of the camp with a left turn to the main road (6) the right and immediately after the petrol station turn left up the hill - through the pretty village of Darvella through." It is not always like that and quite often the translation is clear. The important thing is that it has comprehensive mapping at a very usable scale and purchasing the book enables you to download the GPS track co-ordinates for your GPS (I have not yet done this but hope to do so for my Satmap Active 12). The route chosen varies from the one recommended in the Cicerone guide for the whole of the Rhine route in that it takes the southern shore of Lake Constance. One final point, the book is laminated and therefore better suited for use in poor conditions,

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading even if he is wrong, 28 Feb. 2015

A provocative book by a prominent US conservative political commentator. In summary he argues that Great Britain should have let the two evil regimes of Nazi Germany and Stalin's USSR bleed each other to death and thereby kept its wealth and empire intact. It is well written and argued but he did not convince me. Apart from any of the many arguments one can put against this idea my immediate thought was, how many more than six million Jews and other "Untermenschen" would have died had that happened?

The trailer for the film failed to do it justice. Filmed as if it was a home video it gently pokes fun at mothers obsessing about their children's weddings while following the story of the groom- and bride-to-be and the best man-to-be, whose video it is supposed to be. It is good comedy and worth watching

4.0 out of 5 stars Minor mistakes spoil an otherwise excellent book, 28 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am using this book to learn German from pretty well scratch. It is well laid out and, so far, it is teaching German that would be useful for a visitor to a German-speaking country. I have, however, two criticisms. The first is that some of the speakers are hard to understand but I admit that having to work harder to listen may help when speaking to German speakers in real life. The second is that there are a few mistakes in editing. For example, in Listening exercise 8 (j) it gives two options for the answer, €72,90 or €22,90 with the correct answer (on p244) being €27,90, which is what was spoken on the CD. Minor but irritating. Other than that I am happy with the purchase.

The Scottish Enlightenment: The Scots' Invention of the Modern World
The Scottish Enlightenment: The Scots' Invention of the Modern World

4.0 out of 5 stars A reasonable thesis on the achievements of Scots and how it influenced the world, 3 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this because the campaign to separate from the UK is underway and I wanted to have more information about Scottish history and the achievement of Scots beyond the stale and hackneyed utterances of the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) who hark back to Bannockburn (700 years ago) as some high-point of their history and then blame every modern-day ill on the wicked English.
The book concentrates on the 18th and 19th century starting in the decades just before the Union with England and ending with the start of the Great War. We read about prominent men in philosophy, science, economics, engineering, exploration and education (I suspect more could have been included about banking and insurance); and tales about the Scottish diaspora in Ireland, the British Empire and the USA.
The author is American but not of Scottish descent. He writes well and is altogether favourable towards the Scots but not to the extent that it could be described as hagiographic. There are a few glaring errors such as claiming that HMS.Dreadnought was built in Glasgow in 1902 rather than at Portsmouth in 1906).
I am glad I read it and I recommend it to others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read, 15 Jan. 2014

This is a story that mainly revolves around two remarkable men, 'Bill' Knudsen and Henry Kaiser, who led the way for US industry to become the maker of the majority of the ships, aircraft, vehicles, tanks and weaponry used by the Allies in World War Two. The scale of their collective achievements is astonishing and, from the author's point of view, it happened despite rather than because of the politicians in Washington. No doubt other historians would take a different viewpoint on that. It is a story of Americans and America but it is not nationalistic or hagiographic, as some US historians tend to write. The scope of the book means that the astonishing achievements of other Allies like the UK and Canada are barely touched upon although Mr Herman does acknowledge that UK orders from US manufacturers before 1942 was crucial as were Britain's innovations, which were shared with the US. I recommend reading also David Edgerton's Britain's War Machine.

This does not disparage the effort and success of Fighter Command but it does question whether the Nazis could have succeeded in invading even if they had won the Battle of Britain. Well written and thought provoking
