5.0 out of 5 stars I bought this book in order to understand better the nature of Islamic State as it affects us ..., 25 Sept. 2015

I bought this book in order to understand better the nature of Islamic State as it affects us all. I found it extremely well researched and well written. I found the exploration of the history of IS with its fervent religious, tribal, social psychological and political overtones fascinating. It reads almost as an academic study such is the detail. It is difficult for any treatise such as this to avoid slant but as far as I can judge it remains strictly objective throughout. If I have any criticism, it is I found Arabic names of people and places confusing, necessitating frequent checking back because of the complexities of the location and relationships between various sects and groups; I would have found a glossary of people, places and organisations helpful and maybe one or two maps. These would have made for an easier read. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book and would strongly recommend it; it made me realise how little I really knew about Islam. It is very clear that Islamic State is of huge significance and is a reality that is increasingly affecting our everyday lives - I was left with concern that, because of this burgeoning impact, we are threatened with a Third World War. The thoughts presented that "jawjaw is better than warwar" sound like good advice but who talks and to whom and where is left blank. How far ahead do the politicians of the West look ahead? Usually to the next election, I suspect! WRP

5.0 out of 5 stars The Secret History of Al-Qaida, 26 Feb. 2006
Abdel Bari Atwan has made a genuine contribution to our understanding of the complex issues associated with Al-Qaida. The book has the considerable dual merit of being very readable whilst being informative in depth. The author is at pains to be objective in his appraisal of the situation and, as a consequence, the book is relevant to both Muslim and non-Muslim readers. Likewise, there is no particular political stance but, notwithstanding, one can only hope that those who make decisions on our behalf are influenced either directly or indirectly by Abdel Bari Atwan's analysis and, more importantly, his conclusions.
