Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book 2012
Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book 2012

Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile finding space for this in your pocket, 25 Oct 2013

I find this small guide particularly helpful when travelling abroad. Mr Johnson has a traditional English wine appreciation palate, and as such tends to advise a later drinking `window' for age worthy wines; very helpful if you have similar tastes and a cellar.

The tasting notes are very concise providing key headlines for the wine. His rating system is very simple and is what separates his analysis from other notable wine writers who use more complicated and detailed scoring systems.

Unfortunately, his dislike for Robert Parker's taste and influence is subtlety (and at times less so!) apparent throughout the guide. The massive irony about this is that Mr Johnson has at times savagely attacked Mr Parker, referring to him as the "...dictator of taste". BUT Johnson goes to great length in his guide to tell people what to specifically drink with different types of food, going as far as to state not to add sugar to Ceylon tea! If you like wine, can get over the hypocrisy and bitter note of envy in his writings, then this will be a useful filling to your Christmas stocking.

4.0 out of 5 stars The honest box clever, 26 Jun 2013

I bought these to transport several loose bottles of wines, but wanted something sturdier than cardboard. It’s reasonably easy to assemble, even if a bit fiddly (so 4 stars rather than 5) but you soon get the hang of it. Deceptively small, I was able to store more than 12 bottles in each box, even with a mix including the larger Burgundy and Rhone shaped bottles. The handles make carrying easy, and it disassembles for flat, easy storage until the next time needed. This is a worthwhile investment for those who regularly move wine around.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best spice grinder I've had, 21 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Some of the reviews made me weary but I'm very pleased with this purchase. I do a lot of grinding and this is perfect for home use. It's sturdier than coffee grinders, which I previously used for spices: I've ground whole nutmegs without problems! It grinds spices quickly and evenly without residual lumps, and can handle moisture from a mixture of dry and fresh ingredients (eg. onion, garlic).

It looks neat and has a reasonably small foot print. It comes with 2 bowls and being dishwasher safe makes cleaning easy. My one and only very fussy and small grumble is that water collects in the base of the grinding bowl when stacked upside down in the dishwasher, but this is nothing in the grand scheme of things especially if you have a dish cloth!

It arrived the next day even though I selected the free regular postage option. Easy to assemble and sturdy, it cleared the down pipe that had been blocked for over 2 years with leaves and rubble. I saved A LOT of cash buying this rather than getting in a professional - worth every penny!
