Panasonic RP-HJE120E-R Ergo Fit Ear Canal Headphones - Red
Panasonic RP-HJE120E-R Ergo Fit Ear Canal Headphones - Red

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Sturdy, 29 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I acidently put this in the washer and drier--- cannot tell any sound difference afterwards!

Sounds good for a £10 set of ear phones. Only complaint is that they are not comfy to sleep on (i.e. with your ear down on the pillow).

The Oxford Handbook of Criminology
The Oxford Handbook of Criminology
by Mike Maguire
Edition: Paperback
Price: £35.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, 8 Jan 2014
Provides great introductory chapters for many topics in criminology. Lots of great citations to follow up, and lots of coverage! I am doing criminology as a paper in the 3rd year of a degree course, so this sort of handbook is perfect when your well past the stage of using textbooks. The chapters i've read are well written too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not ergonomic and INTERFERES WITH WIFI, 5 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My wifi hasn't been working since i used this mouse with my laptop- it will have difficulty connecting and cut out every hour or so.

I tried doing 4 internet speed tests - two with the mouse connected, two without. The internet speed with the mouse pugged in, was (1.37 & 1.67), without it was (12.69 & 15.38). There is a 1% chance (using an unequal variances t-test) that this difference would occur by chance. My wireless logitech keyboard has no effect on the wifi, so i am assuming that this is a problem with this mouse spefically.

Another problem is that the mouse is very small and unergonomic.

Otherwise its a nice keyboard!

The Archaeology of Mind: Neuroevolutionary Origins of Human Emotion: Neuroevolutionary Origins of Human Emotions (Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology)
The Archaeology of Mind: Neuroevolutionary Origins of Human Emotion: Neuroevolutionary Origins of Human Emotions (Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology)
by Jaak Panksepp
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £33.25

5.0 out of 5 stars Is saddening how little Panksepp's work is taught in psychology, 7 Sep 2013
This book is filled with fascinating, cross-cultural evidence on the neurobiology of emotion.

So-called evolutionary approaches to emotion like Paul Ekman's which focuses on facial expression are saddeningly off the mark compared to this. Im surprised this book hasn't been acclaimed as highly as other recent works in psychology/neuroscience. I don't think one needs a huge background in neurobiology to understand this, although you will need to look up some of the anatomical parts.

A MUST read.

The only downside it that is that is it very badly edited- it is very repetitive in places where it will mention the same fact over and over again (this is especially true for the introduction). Realistically, a 1/6 of the book could be cut down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant, 27 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Academic books are rarely this interesting and easy to read.

This pretty much covers 5 different approaches to applying evolutionary theory to human behaviour. It is pretty broad in describing the approaches, but also gives many in-depth examples and critiques. Lots and lots of useful references here too.

This doesn't really cover evolutionary theory and doesn't cover in depth the theories proposed by the approaches, and is not really a text-book in this sense, but is a useful starting point for anyone interested in evolution and behaviour.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware what edition you get, 26 July 2013

I got the amazon printed version, which is not very pretty, has no pictures, and footnotes are merged. Try and make sure you get an edition with paul ekman's introduction!

Replacement Remote Control For ONKYO HTX22HDX

4.0 out of 5 stars It actually works! Expensive for what it is..., 26 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was skeptical that this remote would work... i have got other RM series controls in my house for TVs which do not work on my onkyo.

This one DOES work though. It takes a while to figure out which buttons do what (1 & 4 change listening modes, for example).

Overall though, £12 is a bit expensive for a remote control which was not as pretty as the original! I bought my onkyo ex-display which came with no remote, but this is not a bad replacement. My experience with RM-series remote controls is that they tend to last too!

An Easy Guide to Factor Analysis
An Easy Guide to Factor Analysis
by Paul Kline
Edition: Paperback
Price: £24.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, however this book is not for everyone., 23 July 2013
This book does require at least some basic knowledge of statistics, however a lot of it is introduced in the first chapter.

What this book DOES NOT help you with, is the actual practical guide to conducting factor analyses on statistical software. It doesn't give a broad overview of the many types of rotation, extraction techniques, and does not go into much detail on confirmatory factor analysis.

That being said, what this book DOES do is provide the reader with a sound knowledge of the many confusing terms and methods of factor analysis. It actually makes conducting a principle components analysis by hand seem really easy- and I think doing some of the statistics by hand is by far the best way to learn.

However, this is really a basic introduction- it provides excellent descriptions of terms used in factor analysis- but it doesn't really give you a good guide to conducting your own analysis. So buy something else too!

Heuristics: The Foundations of Adaptive Behavior
Heuristics: The Foundations of Adaptive Behavior
by Gerd Gigerenzer
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £65.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction into the "Fast & Frugal Heuristics Approach", 29 May 2013
Excellent book introducing the alternative approach to heuristics that Kahneman & Tvsersky have proposed. Might be worth reading this with "Thinking, Fast & Slow" (Kahneman) and "The Heuristics Debate" (Kelman) for a rounded introduction to heuristics. Although, using pretty much exclusively this as a source got me a very good mark which is unusual.

The first few chapters of this handbook are useful to most undergraduate-level students, then some chapters go into heavy detail. Overall, it is not a too taxing read, and Jargon is kept to a minimum for newcomers. Would probably recommend asking your library to buy this book rather than keeping a personal copy, though.
