Research into legal procedure was first class - can't fault that but couldn't identify with the characters at all. I find Ian McEwan a claustrophobic writer - he never seems to get ou of peoples' heads. I read the novel as a bookgroup choice and look forward to hearing what other people thought and what I missed!

A lovely 'dipping in' book - especially before going to sleep. His many interests and thoughts are so uplifting - it must have been wondeful to have been taught by him.

I don't know if it was a poor translation but I found the book difficult to follow. It was interesting in it showed a very different culture.

An incredible book - very clever and well written - no wasted words. I read it twice back to back (it's not a very long book). The first time I found it disturbing, the second not so much. I was not offended by it in any way but I am not very religious although I have always had a soft spot for St Mary. I feel she had a rough deal. Colm Toibin brought over the feeling of menace that there must have been at that time - certainly Mary felt threatened both by her 'minders' presumably the gospel writers John and ? who appeared to be making her tell them what they wanted to know rather that the truth and the spies who were following her son and his followers. The raising of Lazarus was disturbing as was both crucifixion scenes. The first with the man with the poor bird of prey in a too small cage, which he kept feeding live rabbits, and the second because of the agonising death of her son and the threat to herself from the man she called the strangler. I am left with many puzzles but the book is a really good read.

unusual - completely different to anything I've read before. Characters strong and interesting and Amsterdam setting in the 17th century very well done.
