4.0 out of 5 stars Very good history of a little-known unit., 23 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is a well written and well researched history of a little-known unit.

My only quibble - and that a minor one - is that the author is not well qualified to describe the camouflage scheme that was introduced in the summer of 1943. He captured the distinctive nature of the scheme, but was not equipped to discuss the actual colours used.

I understand that the author has since written two volumes on camouflage and markings of the Luftwaffe's maritime units, for a specialist publisher that would only use reliable, informed material. Alas these two books have been out of print for a while and will be expensive to obtain.

I accept that this is the comment of a modeller who wishes to reproduce this scheme, and does not detract from the book's excellent value as a history of the unit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but can be depressing, 23 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A well-researched work, well written and well presented.
The book includes many stories of the loss of an aircraft and details of the crew that died. Unfortunately these were not balanced by experiences of aircrew in "successful" operations, from which the aircraft returned safely, nor by experiences of members of Bomber Command apart from actual operations. The overall memory from this book is of a catalogue of death and suffering.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but ..., 23 Sep 2013

The book contained a thorough history of 8 Group, the Pathfinder Force.
The appendices were very useful - better than those in The Pathfinder Companion.
While the author's style is clear and approachable, the text suffered in a few places from inadequate editing for grammar. This distracted from the pleasure of reading it, interrupting the smooth flow of the text.

1.0 out of 5 stars Armoured Warfare in the North African Campaign, 26 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book turned out to be a disappointment. Many of the photographs are only vaguely relevant - two pictures of Winston Churchill (in London), photographs of infantry with bayonets, photographs of British and French tanks in France in 1940. There were not enough photographs that fit the book's title. It appears that the author set out to write a general history of the North African campaign but without the space to do the subject justice. Perhaps the author did not have access to enough photographs to cover the subject properly?
