Portrait Gallery: A Life in Classical Music
Portrait Gallery: A Life in Classical Music
by Edward Greenfield
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £16.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Very readable portraits of musical and other personalities, 20 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Interesting for anyone who remembers Greenfield's music reviews in The Gramophone, The Guardian and elsewhere. For several decades there were not many top classical musicians he didn't know; his political journalism adds another dimension. He was quite a name-dropper! His portraits of musical and political personalities (Sir Edward Heath and Thatcher among the latter) are well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books by a musician, 20 Mar. 2016
This review is from: My Life with Wagner (Hardcover)
One of the best books by a musician I have ever read. He writes attractively, conveying his love and knowledge of Wagner with great clarity and giving his invaluable perspective as one of the finest interpreters of Wagner's music dramas. Even people not very familiar with the composer would find it interesting and engaging. Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 3 Mar. 2013

Peter Watson deserves our congratulations and gratitude for this masterly survey of the huge contribution which Germany has made to modern civilisation. It should be in every school in the country to counter the impression that German history began in 1933 and ended in 1945.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning singing from Kaufmann, 3 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Wagner (Audio CD)
This is the best CD of Wagner excerpts for some time. Kaufmann is stunning and brilliantly supported by the masterly conducting of Runnicles. The excerpts from Lohengrin and Die Walküre are particularly fine. And the Wesendonck-Lieder are just as successful with a tenor of Kaufmann's distinction as with the more usual female voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Parsifal, 3 Mar. 2013

One of the best performances of Parsifal - perhaps the best on DVD. A great cast and Barenboim's conducting is magnificent.

4.0 out of 5 stars A vivid story, 3 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Victor Gregg has a harrowing story to tell. He pulls no punches. The RAF/USAF raids on Dresden in February 1945 have been the subject of many accounts, of course, but not all from personal experience. Like many Britons who experienced it as POWs or, more significantly, as Bomber Command pilots, it still nags at Victor Gregg's conscience. How could we commit such a war crime while supposedly standing for higher moral conduct than the Nazis? Many of the bomber pilots never reconciled themselves to what they had been required to do by Churchill and Harris: there was no military or strategic justification for the destruction of Dresden and the incineration or tens of thousands of its inhabitants and refugees.
