5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful watch, 2 Aug 2010

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful picture quality spoils a great movie, 10 Jun 2010
This review is from: My Man Godfrey [1936] [DVD] (DVD)
The picture quality of this DVD is abysmal, and detracts from what should be a sparkling comedy - anyone not familiar with the golden age of black and white film will be put off for life. Avoid!

3.0 out of 5 stars Idiosyncratic views, 18 May 2010
This is an eclectic compilation of Thomson's thoughts on a disparate range of films, American and foreign, good for dipping into and comparing your own opinions with his, or helping you decide if you want to search out a film to watch.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but not great, 18 May 2010
A quite interesting read for anyone who loves the film, but it's a bit too heavy on the sociological / feminist angles; more insights on the film itself would have been better.

4.0 out of 5 stars He went for a little walk..., 18 May 2010
This review is from: The Mummy [DVD] (DVD)
The film is dated, true, but Karloff's performance still works and the scene where the mummy comes to life is still really creepy - all we see is a hand reaching out for the scroll, and the archaeologist's reaction as he sees the mummy - brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Frankenstein, 26 April 2010
What makes this the outstanding film in the Frankenstein series is its terrific set design, the script and wonderful performances by Rathbone and Karloff - both sons of Frankenstein: the scene where the Monster compares his appearance with Wolf Frankenstein's is wonderful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review of the Great Depression, 7 Jan 2010
An interesting but bitty look at the Depression in America - newsreel of events is intercut with scenes from Hollywood movies featuring James Cagney. The lack of a commentary detracts from the production.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really lovely watch, 11 Sep 2009
This watch is great - chunky and girly, with lots of sparkle and an attractively designed face which is easy to read. The quality is very good, and the brown leather strap sets off the gold of the watch. Recommended for anyone who likes a bit of bling when telling the time.

Hunchback of Notre Dame [DVD] [1939] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Dvd ~ Charles Laughton

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Hollywood's greatest, 12 May 2008
This film is great on all levels - the performances of course, especially a very young Maureen O'Hara before the studios removed the naturalness, the music, the sets - but what really stands out is the cinematography and mise en scene: you feel that this is what medieval Paris was really like. Scenes such as the one where Quasimodo brings a caged bird to Esmeralda, or when he leaps on to the giant bell - "she made me deaf" - have tremendous emotional power. This movie should be available for Region 2, along with other greats of the 30s such as the Lubitsch films.
