2.0 out of 5 stars Smart? Home Automation with SOME linux and A VERY LITTLE Raspberry Pi, 20 Mar. 2014

This book epitomises the current state of home automation: fragmented, incoherent with the odd nugget of real information.

With a title like this you might expect a detailed guide on how to employ Raspberry Pi's to automate your home using linux, but the PI section begins on p271 of 292 and part of that is a description of what a Pi is.

If the rest of the book was good I would have given it three stars. Sadly, it is dreadfully structured - starting with a long exposition on X10, which really seems to be just a cover for advertorial for Marmitek products. It would have been much better if the first three chapters had been moved to the end and it started with Chapter 4, which covers the physical practicalities and is a more logical point to begin from.

There are some glaring omissions - for instance 'security' does not feature in the index at all. If you are going to automate your home this will generate private data and you need to plan to secure that data.

There is a real need for a good guide to home automantion, but this is not it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good mobile worker choice, 12 April 2013

I needed an adapter to make a plantronics headset work with my laptop.

I previously bought the DA60, but the dongle on that adapter is very big (6"x3"x1") and not suitable for mobile use.

This adapter is much more compact (3"x2/3"x1/5"). It lacks the in line volume controls and mute switch of the DA60, but for the difference in price that is acceptable to me. It also didn't come with the software that the DA60 did (if you want this I think it can be downloaded).

The adapter worked plug and play and can be hot swapped with the larger DA60 if needed, which is now permanently attached to my docking station. So I use the DA60 when docked and this adapter when mobile. Both the laptop and skype change between the two adapters without any reconfiguration on my part.

In terms of audio/voice quality I haven't noticed any perceptible difference between the two adapters.

If you need something light and simple then this is a good choice.

Bought on the hype of the link to 'Band of Brothers' and my limited knowledge of the war in the Pacific.

Sadly, this book failed to deliver either a coherent account of the campaign, which admittedly the author did not set out to do, or convey the experience of fighting through the major battles.

A further criticism is that the maps did not tie in well with the text, quite often locations mentioned in the narrative were not shown on the relevant map.

In short my recommendation is go directly to the books written by two of the main personalities covered in the book.
