4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable family film, 6 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This film is loosely based on a short story by James Thurber, with Danny Kaye as the eponymous dreamer. It was obviously meant as a showcase for Kaye's talents, but unfortunately, much as I love him, I'd have to say that his extra routines (The Music Professor and Anatole of Paris) seem dated now, stall the action and make the film over-long. Also Virginia Mayo is rather wooden as the girl of Walter's dreams.

Apart from those reservations, the film is in my opinion a funny and touching period piece and makes excellent family viewing. There is a lovely cast of supporting characters including Walter's irritable boss, his unsuitable fiancée Gertrude Griswold and her fearsome mother, and a sinister psychiatrist played by Boris Karloff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating trek in the footsteps of Alexander, 24 Feb 2013

Very absorbing - not to say exhausting! By the end you feel as if you have really trudged across Asia with Alexander. But Michael Wood is a much more genial companion than the great man himself would have been, I'm sure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good battle explanations, 24 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As someone who has never understood battles, and can never work out how anyone involved in a battle knows what's going on or who they're meant to be attacking, I find this DVD very clear and helpful. As a Classics teacher I felt I ought to know something about famous battles such as Marathon and Salamis, and am now suitably enlightened. The computer simulations are pleasantly gore-free, and the various "talking heads" who pop up between the battle scenes are well-informed and only speak briefly. (The "ad break" recaps which crop up every so often are slightly annoying.) Well-paced and informative.

This review is from: The Miracle Maker [DVD} (DVD)
This is a beautiful film. The animation is remarkable and the actors doing the voices are all superb. The people who made the film spoke about how much love they put into it and how the finished result was "more than the sum of its parts". It's very moving and I can't recommend it too highly.

Lovely to read again a classic book I haven't read for years. On the Kindle it's very easy and zips along. A great story but also a history lesson.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful, well-acted film, 25 April 2012

I really enjoyed this film. It has the atmosphere of a stage play. Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy and Sidney Poitier are excellent, as are the supporting players. It's thoughtful and enlightening - with some nice touches of humour.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nicely-made series, 4 Aug 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've only watched the first episode so far but thought it was good. Some of the acting isn't the greatest, but a lot of effort has gone into recreating the ancient world, and (as far as I have watched) it is fairly gentle and suitable for youngish children. (I can't say how it compares with the books, not having read them yet.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Not useful for a sixth form student, 18 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a facsimile of an old edition of Sallust dating from 1859. I bought it for a sixth form student, but we haven't found it very helpful. It consists of the text of the two monographs, a vocabulary and some notes on each work. The notes are very brief and rather too scholarly for our purposes.

I would recommend instead the edition by J T Ramsey (OUP 2007) which we have just discovered and which is very helpful indeed.
