*****THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE REGION A KINO RELEASE!!****

Dr. Xavier (played by RAY MILLAND) is a brilliant scientist who develops a drug that can improve his eyesight exponentially and enable him to see things that are normally hidden from human sight. At first he can see through girls clothing, which provides great comedic potential at a swinging 60's party. However the more he uses the more he can see, and after accidentally killing a colleague who is trying to help him Xavier goes on the run, first as a sideshow act at a carnival where he manages to alarm veteran actor Dick miller (A Corman regular for those who don't know) and then a healer who can identify illness in the human body. However the drug soon begins to mutate his eyes even further beyond anything a human has ever experienced and his ultimate experience ends up becoming something more spiritual.
Directed by the legendary Rodger Corman, X is a highly regarded and brilliantly crafted sci-fi picture that still endures and holds up today. Originally Corman had intended it to be about a Jazz Musician experimenting with drugs however he was concerned that at that point(1963) the film might encounter censorship issues so decided to go with the 'mad' scientist, something more familiar to audiences of this era. Ironically it wouldn't be much longer before the counter culture would explode and the Director would end up taking LSD as an experiment before shooting THE TRIP. As fun as THE TRIP is, I would argue that this film is perhaps the more transcendental and conciousness expanding of the two and certainly the better made. X is perhaps one of Rodger Cormans best pictures, certainly Ray Milland cited it as one of his favourites along with the LOST WEEKEND the film that won him an oscar.
Sadly X is region locked. A real shame as this is a fantastic disc. The film was previously released by MGM on the midnight movies label. This release ports over the Rodger Corman commentary track from that, We also get a great and very informative commentary from Video Watchdogs own Tim Lucas that really offers some new insight into the film and its production. We also get an interview from Corman alumni Joe Dante and a Trailers from hell with Mick Garris to round things off. The picture quality is astonishing and the film has never looked better.
If you can play this then you should buy it. If not, then hopefully a UK label such as Arrow,101 or 88 films might consider it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great (region locked) double-bill., 5 July 2015

**** THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE REGION A SCREAM FACTORY RELEASE!!*********

Food of the Gods.

A group of football players are on vacation on a remote Canadian island when one of their party is attacked by giant wasps. They discover a farm house where a mysterious substance has been coming out of the ground, it got mixed in with chicken feed and the farms chickens have grown to enormous size. The Farmers wife (played by the legendary Ida Lupino) informs the footballers that her husband has gone to the city to sell the substance to a major corporation. The jocks leave, but soon return with shotguns to take care of the problem, also on the island is a young couple in an RV on vacation and a corporate bigwig and his assistant (Ralph Meeker and genre legend Pamala Franklin) keen on buying the food. Unfortunately non of them might leave the island as now the food chain has been contaminated, the local rat population has grown to enormous size and is intent on devouring everyone they see!
Directed by Bert I Gordon who also wrote the film and produced the effects, Food of the Gods is a great little nature gone amok film that warns of the dangers of tampering with the food chain. With the current controversy over GM crops, the films central message is still relevant today. In the era of computer generated effects the effects here, which combine rear projection, Rotoscoping and miniature work in order to depict the huge creatures, look a little dated in places. However that is arguably part of the charm, and the fact that one man managed to deliver this is something of an achievement. My only real concern here is that some of the scenes involving the Rats suggest a potential level of cruelty. The scenes of rats getting shot apparently involve dye and blow guns, however some scenes involving drowned rats look uncomfortably real. I didn't see any 'no animals were harmed..." disclaimers at the end of the film. While the film does suffer as well from some occasionally ropey dialogue fans of AIP films of this era know what they are getting in to and the film was popular enough to spawn a belated sequel in GNAW: FOOD OF THE GODS 2. The picture quality is excellent, its been previously available on a now OOP MGM region 1 DVD on the Midnite movies label. This new blu-ray is a definite step up from that one.

FROGS.

The second AIP nature amok title on this double bill features Sam Elliott as a photographer who gets knocked into the water by speed-boaters when out taking pictures. The boaters fish him out and take him to their Fathers island to dry off. Jason Crockett (played by Ray Milland) is the curmudgeonly owner of the island and head of the family who asks Elliott's character to look for one of his employees who has vanished. Elliot soon discovers the workers body. Crockett asks him to keep it quiet and avoid alarming the rest of the family however this proves difficult as it seems nature has turned against the family and the creatures of the island are killing them off one by one, all seemingly orchestrated by the huge bullfrogs that seem to populate the island. It seems that not only is Crockett an overbearing, domineering patriarchal southern racist, but he's also seen fit to pollute the lake in a bid to rid the lake and island of its wildlife and nature is fighting back.
Frogs is an underrated little film with a great sense of atmosphere created by the incessant croaking of the Frogs, the poster art depicts a Frog with a human hand hanging out of its mouth but the Fogs don't actually kill anyone. Instead they seem to be either passive observers of the destruction of the Crockett family or orchestrating it on behalf of the various snakes, reptiles ect. that are actually doing the killing. As there are no giant mutant creatures the effects work is actually pretty decent and mainly seems to consist of live animal footage. Tonally and thematically its reminiscent of the much later Australian film LONG WEEKEND, and I suspect that this film may have provided at least some inspiration, however weekend is the better film. While food of the gods lacked a UK release this one is available quite cheaply on a UK DVD from MGM.
Like Food of the Gods this blu-ray is a definite step up in terms of quality.

Overall this is a fun double bill that does require a region free blu-ray player and an appreciation for cheesy creature flicks. I suspect some people reading this might end up hating it but for me both films are very entertaining. This release cost me a little over £10 which was certainly well worth the price!

Blulu Magnetic Cupboard Locks for Baby Safety Child Proofing (4 Locks + 1 Key)
Blulu Magnetic Cupboard Locks for Baby Safety Child Proofing (4 Locks + 1 Key)

Price: £19.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Great idea!, 5 July 2015
Given my complete lack of DIY skills, these locks are something of a god send.

Essentially they secure to the inside of your cupboard with strong adhesive tape, then when you need to open a cupboard you simply use the key provided which opens the lock using an effective magnet. My cupboard doors are quite thick and robust oak and the magnet worked fine so it should penetrate most kitchen units with ease. Just don't lose the key!

For its price point this is an excellent item at a reasonable price. The adhesive should withstand reasonable wear & tear but time shall tell!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great quality!, 1 July 2015
While specifically designed for the fitbit charger, these silicone bands are also great for other types of wrist bands and watches to help keep them in place and avoid dropping off in the street. Like other similar bands from the same manufacturer they can also make great cable tidies.
While they have a great practical application, as they are strong and well crafted to avoid snapping they are also suitable for purely decorative use on wrist bands to add a little colour.
Overall good quality at a great price!

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent value., 1 July 2015
These bands are designed for Fitbit Flex Wristband Wrist Band Bracelet in order to assist in keeping it securely fitted on your wrist. For this they are the perfect size, strong and flexible to prevent snapping. They can also be used on appropriately sized wrist watches as well as other items you might need to secure. I also discovered they can make a great cable tidy!
Like with similar products, my friends daughter has got creative and is using them to decorate wrist bands, they come in some pretty colours and look great used together.
Overall great quality at a good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars great value!, 1 July 2015
This is a light weight stand for Apple Watch iWatch 38mm and 42mm. It doesn't come with any charging gear but is specifically designed to give you a secure place to store your watch while charging.
Its a lovely looking piece of kit with a metallic silver look that compliments the iwatch well. It might be a little light weight for some as the base itself could use a little weight but positioned on my computer desk with something weighty in the gap in the middle it worked fine. Its also theoretically possible to clip it to something with a little trial and error though I don't think this was intentional in its design.
For it's price its a great little bargain and worth looking at if you need something secure to hold your iwatch while charging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun!, 1 July 2015
These Silicone fastener rings are primarily designed to help secure your wrist watch. If the fastener has a habit of slipping this can keep it in place and prevent your watch (or anything else you wear on your wrist) from dropping off on the street,
HOWEVER.
My friends daughter has purloined most of them to decorate her wrist band. To be fair they suit her more than me and she's pleased as punch with them! I did however get to keep a couple as they can also make great cable tidies if used correctly
Overall great, colourful fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent aid for budding photographers., 29 Jun. 2015
This 'selfie stick' boasts compatibility with iPhone 6 6 Plus 5s 5c 5 4s 4, Samsung Galaxy S6 S5 S4 S3 S2 Note 4 3 2, HTC One M8 M7 X, Google Nexus, Sony Xperia Z3 Z2 and other Android smart phones, in fact most of the Chinese import phones of an equivalent size will work with it. Especially items compatible with the latest Blutooth software.

While its essentially sold as a selfie stick, as that's the big thing these days, this device has numerous functions including tripod and desk top mount. Its a pretty versatile piece of kit that can be charged via the usual means of USB and comes with a nifty carry bag to store it all in. The actual controls are easy to use and allow a lot of direct control of the camera with no drop out or interference of the blutooth signal.
This stand is excellent value for money and certainly worth a punt so long as your phone is compatible!

Classic Steampunk Skeleton Mechanical Men Hand Winding Wrist Watch
Classic Steampunk Skeleton Mechanical Men Hand Winding Wrist Watch

5.0 out of 5 stars Great looking steam punk watch!, 29 Jun. 2015
This watch ships in a well padded gift box with plenty of packing. So rest easy it should get to your door safe and sound.

Once opened, the watch itself is really good looking. The manufacturer has made several steam-punkish looking watches with a clear see-through make that lets you see the inner workings. The watch is self wind so no extra expense on batteries and the watch keeps good time. Just remember it may need adjusting after a nights sleep. The strap The watch is fairly heavy and bulky however this works as part of its style. If that's off putting then shop around, as I mentioned before this manufacturer has other watches of a similar style that are smaller and lighter.
The metal strap was a little big for my wrist however my local Jeweller adjusted it with no issues.
Overall this is a great looking, functional watch. Steam Punk enthusiasts should love it, however if that's not your thing its still a nice looking watch at a great price!

Mudder Golden Transparent Skeleton Black Leather Mechanical Watch for Men Women
Mudder Golden Transparent Skeleton Black Leather Mechanical Watch for Men Women

5.0 out of 5 stars Looks beautiful!, 29 Jun. 2015
First things first, this watch comes very well packaged in a gift box with cushion and padding, taking care of any risk of damage in transit.

Once opened, the first thing that is apparent is that is an extremely pretty watch. It has an ornate steam-punkish looking design that is really pleasing to look at. The watch is almost see through in places showing the watches inner workings. The strap is of a good quality and fit round my wrist with no looseness or tightness. There's enough notches on the strap to make sure it will fit a wide variety of wrists. That said, the strap should be easily replaceable if you need something bigger/smaller, most local jeweller's will do this for you cheaply.

Overall this is a great value watch for its price-point. Its self winding so no need for batteries, just remember to wind it once in a while.
