3.0 out of 5 stars One of Three? No thank you., 6 Aug. 2012

This review is from: Fifty Shades of Grey (Paperback)
I can't fault Amazon's delivery. It was up to it's expected, highly efficient standard. The book was brand new and in excellent condition.
The story itself was annoying and extremely over-hyped. I understand it's a ladies book. That element of control and subjugation does nothing for me. I was however very amused to hear a presenter on Radio 4 refer to it as Clit Lit and perhaps that swung the barometer in favour of purchase. I wish I hadn't bothered. To add insult to injury 2 days later I could have bought it for less from my local supermarket.
It is part 1 of a trilogy. I understand that in book 3, roles are reversed and Grey becomes the submissive. Needless to say I will NOT be buying books 2 and 3.

4.0 out of 5 stars 'Potiche' everso French - mildly amusing, 13 April 2012

This review is from: Potiche [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
The delivery of the DVD was faultless; Amazon lived up to it's well deserved excellent reputation.

As regards the film, in truth I was somewhat disappointed. It was well hyped albeit on the minor, specialist cinema circuit. I had been unable to see it at Ludlow so hence I bought it.

I am not a fluent french speaker so I had to rely heavily on the subtitles. On the large screen, they might have been more visible but on a small television screen the words were often lost by being light on light. Also I felt I was losing some of the action/body language by having to concentrate on the words.

Having said all that, criticism over. It is a typically gentle french romantic film. It was mildly amusing, not "hilarious" but Deneuve and Depardieu, as ever, are a delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Melanie, 18 May 2011
Oh Melanie, great to hear you again. A real trip down memory lane particularly 'Ruby Tuesday' and 'Look what they've done to my song'.
In terms of delivery, Amazon up to their usual, prompt and, now expected, high standard.

2.0 out of 5 stars Monks Wig critique, 16 Mar. 2011
The product was barely adequate for the job (playing Friar Tuck in pantomime). Sadly it had been packed folded so that the tonsure had a severe and visible crease. I suggest that it would be better packed in on itself using the 'hair' to pad out and support the pate.

5.0 out of 5 stars In memoriam for Peggy, 10 Oct. 2010
This review is from: Back To Love (Audio CD)
Song 4 "How we love", was played recently at a dear friend's, Peggy's, funeral. That is what prompted me to firstly 'You tube' the song (but it has a slight variation in it) and then subsequently buy the CD.
As expected of BNC, all of it was brilliantly constructed, expertly balanced and beautifully sung.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Magnificent Fat Duck, 16 Nov. 2009
This review is from: The Fat Duck Cookbook (Hardcover)
The Fat Duck Cookbook is a magnificent book in every respect. It is a big book, beautifully produced with truly superb photography and a delightful, slightly quirky, layout, (where else would you find the index as a spreadsheet in the middle of the book and the dedication right at the back?).
It is so much more than just a cookbook; it is Heston Blumenthal's story.
Part one is History (his story?), part two is Recipes and part three is Science. It is entertaining and easy to read; it is informative to the point of education and, to use Jay Raynor's comment, the wonderfully enticing pictures of food are "pure Gastro-porn".
I am a simple soul. I am a reasonable cook in the sense that guests seem to appreciate my efforts and I have sufficent skill to survive without starving. The idea of taking food preparation and presentation to the heights of celebrity chefdom has been a bit of a lazy aspiration. I suspect that the chance of me ever actually dining at the Fat Duck is pure fantasy - I probably will not live long enough for a table to become vacant nor find a banker prepared to give me a sufficent mortgage - but that is what dreams are for.
The Fat Duck Cookbook affords me the opportunity to dabble in the shadow of a Master but more than that I predict that it has a place in history as popular and as topical as Mrs Beetons Cookbook but on a par with Escoffier. I hope to keep my 'first edition' in pristine condition as it will surely increase in value. I wonder if I can get HB to sign it ;-)
