Hanratty: The Final Verdict
Hanratty: The Final Verdict
by Bob Woffinden
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT THE FINAL VERDICT,BUT PRETTY CLOSE TO ONE, 9 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having read Paul Foots account of the A6 crime in his brilliant account "Who Killed Hanratty?" immediately before this,I wasn't sure what to expect.

Well,if anything, this is even more detailed, and more convincing than Foots tome.True,Woffinden had the advantage of an extra twenty five years on Foot, and many more things had come to light in that time. Also he had seen many documents that Foot hadn't had access to.

This book followed on from the documentary produced by Woffinden "Hanratty-The Mystery of Deadmans Hill",first shown on TV in the early 90's,and continues the argument on.

Yes,you're going to say,DNA now proves Hanrattys guilt.Well, that may,or may not be true, but that is for another day, this book leads up to the beginnings of the DNA testing, but no more.

Woffinden lays out(like Foot),a very good case for the innocence of Hanratty, and proves that on the evidence brought to trial he should never have hung.Regardless of him changing his alibi, the Crowns case was full of holes, and not far short of a fit-up,that it would never even go to trial now I believe.

There are(still)too many unanswered questions in this case; What was Charles France involvement? What part did Peter Alphon play? How did the police connect Hanratty with the crime in the first place? What was the motive? etc etc.

Although(without the DNA)I'm convinced of Hanrattys innocence,I'm not convinced of Alphons guilt.Woffinden builds a case against him at the end of the book, but I'm not sure it's strong enough.

I'm sure we haven't heard the last of this case, but if you are interested in it,then make this book a must read.

Still one of the most shocking, and absorbing murder cases of the 20th century.

The Two Stranglers Of Rillington Place
The Two Stranglers Of Rillington Place
by Rupert Furneaux
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars GOOD TITLE,BUT NOT TRUE!, 13 July 2012
This is an interesting, but flawed take on the murders that happened over a 10 year period in the 40's-50's at the same run down house at 10 Rillington Place.
I will assume that anyone coming to this book will have a working knowledge of these crimes,so will not go into any length about them.
John Reginald Halliday Christie was tried and hung for the murders of 6 women(including his wife)found at Rillington Place where Christie had lived. This evoked memories of a previous tennant, one Timothy Evans, who 4 years previously had also been hung for the murders of his wife and child.
This author(contrary to most peoples thinking)believes that not only were there two STRANGLERS living and killing side by side, but that they teamed-up to kill Evans wife and child!
Whilst the author puts a case for his claims,I can find no merit in them.
If you want to find out what really happened, and get a far more detailed account of the case read Ludovic Kennedys book 10 Rillington Place, and leave this semi-fiction book on the shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars HANRATTY,STILL INNOCENT?, 27 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ok,we now know that DNA evidence says that James Hanratty WAS guilty of the infamous A6 Murder.
This book though, was written some 30 years before all of that, and even though there are updates as late as 1988 in the book, these came too soon for Paul Foot to comment on the DNA findings.
So what of the book as written? Well there is no doubt that Foot puts the case for Hanrattys innocence very well, and anyone reading this without any prior knowledge of the case would be hard pressed to not think the same by the end of the book.
It's also true to say that regardless of anything else,Hanratty still should never have been found guilty on the evidence presented by the prosecution.
So what to believe now for all the Hanratty supporters? Could the DNA evidence have been contaminated?
I don't know, but I do know that this is still one of the best books written about a true-life crime, and the best defence put forward of a guilty(?) man.

5.0 out of 5 stars ALAS,POOR FRANK,I SHALL MISS YOU!, 15 Jun. 2012
Yes,I will miss Frank, this being the last ever series of Public Eye.
Without a doubt, one of the strongest of all seven series of the programme.Great story lines, super scripts, superb acting in general, and sublime in Alfred Burkes case.
This last series sees Frank re-locate to Chertsey, via a spell working with an old Police chum of Percy Firbanks, and even sees Franks rates soar to £8 a day!
As well as Percy Firbank, and new colleague Ron Gash, there is even a chance for nearly-a-romance,Mrs Mortimer to pop up.
So sit back, switch off your phone, make a drink, and soak up and enjoy drama like it used to be,this really is TV Gold, and they just don't make'em like this any more.
More's the shame, here's to you Frank!

1.0 out of 5 stars SUNK.......WITHOUT TRACE!, 21 April 2012
This review is from: Titanic (ITV) [DVD] (DVD)
Im not going to waste too many words on this rubbish, plenty has already been written about it here, but I needed to give my one star rating.Simply put, badly written, terrible acting, rotten SFX,lazy stories, etc, etc. Fellowes should hang his head in shame at this,to think he was shouting his big mouth off at the press launch, about how HIS version was going to be the most truthful seen.Well it wasnt, was it Julien? It stank, from start to finish, and if theres any justice the only place this DVD should end is the bottom of the ocean.

4.0 out of 5 stars THE GOOD.THE BAD AND THE UGLY!...AND,AHEM,THE MASTER!!, 22 Oct. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Colony in Space is not vintage Who,its not even vintage Pertwee, but it is still good Who.Im not really a fan of space stories where the planet that The Doctor arrives at is inhabited by Earth colonists, but there is plenty going on here, and we have The Master....For me,the story is watchable for two reasons,Jon Pertwee and Roger Delgardo.Their interaction stops this from being a bore, although there is some good support from amongst others,Bernard Kay.The extras are a little bare, but its the commentary that im most interested in,and this is entertaining enough, although they do stray away from the story too much(isnt that what Toby Hadock is there for?).Also, why does Terrance Dicks vanish after just two eps? So,all in all,a worthwhile purchess,if for nothing else than to see one of the most bizarre aliens ever!

Right firstly ignore the non 5 star ratings, this is pure gold.I have to confess and say I hadnt seen series 1 when this was broadcast, but seeing the trailers I couldnt resist watching.Well,I was then hooked(no pun intended Mr Jelly!),I then lapped up series 1 on DVD,and onto series 2.But back to this special,it stands as a link between the two series, but also works as a stand alone aswell. All the main characters appear, the afore mentioned Mr Jelly,David and Maureen,Mr Lomax, and Joy in stories not unlike the Hammer or other films of the 70s,with inter linking material.Funny, and scary in places, this is great stuff for a dark October evening. So,sit back, switch the lights off,and enjoy,Trick or Treat anybody?

5.0 out of 5 stars RICK SPLEENS CAREER GOES DOWN LIKE A LEAD BAL.......!!!!!, 5 Aug. 2011
Ok,so series 4(its been a long time coming!)sees everyone that bit older, and in the case of Rick Spleen(Jack Dee),even more of a loser. In the episodes we get here,Rick seems to have lost his status as a comedian.Instead,we see him as a presenter on "The Bargain Channel"-Shopping-and running a comedy class, among other things, all with disasterious results. All the main cast are back, and although slightly different in feel, this is still comedy gold. I did miss some of the inter play between Rick and his comedy writer Marty, but everyone are still in sparkling form.Heres hoping that we get a 5th series, please Mr Dee,and the BBC!

5.0 out of 5 stars ....WHAT A BREATH OF FRESH AIR..., 27 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
They really dont make them like this anymore.Ok,NO tv is made like this anymore, but I mean the quality, the class, the acting,the.....Allright,there is good stuff today, but this takes us back to another era.As you know eager readers,Alfred Burke plays Frank Marker Private Enquiry Agent, jailed in the last series for a crime he didnt commit. The series opener sees Frank preparing for release after doing 12 months, and heading for Brighton, where he finds himself staying in the guesthouse of Mrs Mortimer, whom he finds friendship in,and a oh-so-nearly-romance(I would have!). The seven episodes see Frank in various jobs, including working for someone elses Detective Agency, before finally going it alone by the end. This is pure gold, great acting from the sublime Alfred Burke, and some great support from the guest cast, and regulars.Do yourself a favour and get this now,you WILL NOT regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT SCI-FI/THRILLER HORROR!!, 26 July 2011
This review is from: Triangle [DVD] (DVD)
Ignore the fools who give this film 1 star, they just probably cant handle anything more complicated than Harry Potter. If you havent seen this and are looking to do so,than im not going to spoil it by telling you what happens, and I suggest you avoid reviews that do.Surfice to say,6 "friends" set out on a boat journey that ends in tragedy, only to be "rescued" by a huge liner, thats when the film really starts. I loved this, and you will want to watch it at least twice to make sure you didnt miss anything. Decent extras, including a fine commentary, watch with an open mind.
