1.0 out of 5 stars A sadly unsuccessful revisiting of Austen characters., 20 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
From such a wonderfully talented writer, this was a serious disappointment. Had her editors been genuinely serious, they would have advised her against publishing. The writing is loose, and the plot tedious, and implausible. What is almost worse are the terrible liberties James took with the characterisations. Had she been less genuinely ironic herself, Jane Austen would be spinning under the floor of Winchester Cathedral.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern map of Mocambique, 20 May 2013

This review is from: Map of Mozambique (Map)
This is what I needed, having lost the one I used when I travelled extensively in Mocambique in the 1950s and 1960s. The detail is excellent, as far as I can now judge.

Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance: 25th Anniversary Edition
Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance: 25th Anniversary Edition
by Robert Pirsig
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome new edition of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, 20 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Surely one of the most important books of the 20th Century. I read it with pleasure and profit when it first appeared, and thought I would like the new edition with author's introduction on readers' guide. It is a superb introduction to philosophy, though not perfect on motorbikes, about which I think I know a great deal more than Pirsig did. I love his analogy between sculpture and assembling machinery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another look at Judas, 31 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: My Name Was Judas (Kindle Edition)
Guided by his rational judgement, I thought that the author gave an account of what might or might not have happened in First Century Palestine much more plausible that those in the New Testament Gospels. It will probably convert neither the devout nor the atheist, but it might appeal to the sceptic as something worth thinking about.

3.0 out of 5 stars CD shelves, 26 Nov 2012

Given the price, I didn't expect anything designed by Hepplewhite or Chippendale, and it wasn't. It's a serviceable storage for CDs and DVDs at a modest price.

5.0 out of 5 stars great audible door bell, 9 Feb 2012
This bell has helped greatly. Deteriorating hearing was making it difficult to distinguish between standard doorbell "ring" and the noise which signalled incoming emails.

5.0 out of 5 stars Granddaughter hasn't read it yet, 30 Oct 2011
Granddaughter hasn't read it yet. It is to be her 11th birthday present. She is, for her age, scientifically sophisticated and a devoted reader of science for the young..

Beyond the Hoax: Science, Philosophy and Culture
Beyond the Hoax: Science, Philosophy and Culture

5.0 out of 5 stars Sokal talks rational sense again, 31 Mar 2010
This book should be a deathblow to the grotesque inanities of deconstructionist and postmodernist theory which has had such a devastating effect on university humanities departments, especially in the US. It will fail to be a deathblow. Among the deconstructionist/postmodernist devotees and apologists of my acquaintance, some claim never to have heard of Sokal. They are not moved by the facts and the arguments Sokal presents, because they don't believe that there are such things as facts, nor do they believe in rational argument.
