York E-Z Curl Bar - 5.1 kg
York E-Z Curl Bar - 5.1 kg
Price: £19.25

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent price for a very good curl bar, 10 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This York curl bar is as good as any curl bar you will find, only reason i gave it four stars is due to the spin locks which are a bit of an annoyance during a workout. I decided to go for the spin lock version as my older weights fit it perfectly and it saves me money upgrading with new weights for the time being... i will eventually upgrade.

The price of this bar was an affordable solution for me at the moment, but if you can afford or have the weights to fit a clip lock curl bar then go for that instead, i would always recomend avoiding spin locks if you can.

1.0 out of 5 stars Space Monsters Invade Dawsons Creek, 19 July 2012
Dawsons creek under attack by aliens and preds! The battle scenes might have earned this move an extra star if you could actually see what was going on. I have never seen the lighting be so detrimental to a film. Not much else to say about this as i have nothing good to say about it, i prefer only to review films that i like... or at least find something in them i like.

4.0 out of 5 stars You Don't Need To Be A Trekkie To Enjoy This, 19 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Science fiction is my favourite genre but i never was a star trek fan, I did fall into that popular belief star trek was for trekkies... not that there is anything wrong with being a trekkie... and that the series had just become habitual for most. Star trek the reboot 2009 has completely changed my view, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A TREKKIE to enjoy this film, it is spectacular from start to finish and in certain parts awe inspiring.
And Regardless wether you are a sci fi junkie or not you will still enjoy this thrill ride of a movie if epic action packed blockbusters are your thing.
Ressurecting the original Iconic characters with younger actors was a gamble... a gamble that paid off. Every actor is matched well... you realy do belive you are looking at a young captain kirk and spock. Realy can't think of anything to complain about in this film, im sure the hardocre fans may do some nit picking but as a casual outsider this movie worked and reeled me in for the sequels.

As for the blu ray disc... i would say its the best looking high def film since Avatar.

If the movies producers had set out to reastablish star trek among the movie going massess, pump new blood and fresh ideas into what was a stagnant series, while recruiting new fans along the way... then star trek 2009 was an unequivocal success!

4.0 out of 5 stars Much Better Than Expected, 18 July 2012
This review is from: Predators [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Im glad to say this was much better than i expected and reason for that is... well theres two... first off the original sequal Predator 2 was abysmal and secondly after the AVP disasters i lost hope in fox being able to bring us a decent movie with the predator in it ever again. by no means is this a great film but it is a realy good film... almost comparable with the original Predator. what realy worked here was good casting just like in the original film, good director, decent script... as well as taking the iconic mosnters back to a jungle setting where they belong.

The other thing i realy liked about this movie is the planet the hapless characters find themselves on is no predator planet but a game reserve, its a horrific thought and you feel the terror of the characters when they realise they are being hunted for sport... after that the hunt is on and its a battle for survival. for me this is the proper sequal to the orignal Predator, just pretend Predator 2 doesnt exist.

Only problem i had was i seen no reason for the super predators to have different facial features... it seemed a bit drastic. i would have stopped at different armour and weaponry to differentiate between them and the classic predators, i like the idea of different warring preadtor empires in its civilisation but without the major changes to creature designs... just like the xenomorph from the alien movies the predator is a classic and iconic monster design and doesnt need to be changed in my opinion... or to look primitive and vulnerable as it did tied up in one scene.

The soundtrack and sound editing resembling the original Predator here works well and adds continuity.

And finally the movie ends in a way that makes you want to see a sequal, i cant remember predator 2 making me feel like that.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lost Opportunity, 18 July 2012
I realy wanted to love this movie or at least realy like it... but i view it as a dissapointment, the two most iconic sci fi monsters in cinema history on screen for the first time should have been an epic one off affair, instead its just a popcorn flick which will spawn sequals for teenagers who play video games(yes i do know its based on a video game and comic) but they realy could have made an epic sci fi horror film here, its a lost opportunity.

The set pieces i will admit are stunning, the overall look of the film is great... you cant go wrong with an antarctic setting in this type of movie. the pyramid deep below the ice was a brilliant concept... keeping with the dark claustrophic tradition of aliens, the creature effects are second to none... aliens and predators never looked better... the queen in particular as gracefull as ever. The battle sequences between the aliens and predators where excellent although brief... which sadly was the only good thing about the film.

Due to its rating there was no horror or gore, and sadly that wasnt replaced with suspense or tension. the terror that both alien and predator franchises are known for wasnt brought to this film which is its biggest failing. Paul ws anderson being involved was another big failing... just isnt good enough of a film maker to bring anything original to these franchises. I hate to say it too but the casting was horrible in this film, not even lance henriksen made sense to be in it.

The awful idea of the predators using the alien to improve their hunting technique was ridiculous, i hated the thought of the aliens being primitive... no wonder james cameron, ridley scott and sigourney weaver disliked and distanced themselves from these movies. Ofcourse it is a spin off not connected to the alien franchise... the continuity issues dont realy apply here, but it still does not make sense to compromise one of your most iconic movie monsters... there could have been more inventive ways of connecting the alien mythology with the predators.

I dont hate this movie and i do own it on blu ray... but only for revisiting the battle sequences with the aliens and preds...which is fun.

Final thought... lots of good ideas in this movie as well as a couple of bad ones, but i have to blame fox ulitmately for insisting on a pg13 rating

Pandorum [Blu-ray]
Pandorum [Blu-ray]
Dvd ~ Dennis Quaid
Price: £7.10

3.0 out of 5 stars Worthy Addition, 18 July 2012
This review is from: Pandorum [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Pandorum is a decent science fiction film...its nothing you havent seen before if you are a fan of the genre...but even then its worthy. I have seen it compared to Resident evil which im not a fan of, and Alien, but it is nowhere near as good a film as the Classic Alien...yet plenty of comparisons, and is a much better film than any of the dreadful resident evil entrys in my opinion.
The film trys hard to to be scarey but at no point did i feel scared, it certainly has an eerie feeling to it with its claustrophobic dark corridors and sparse lighting throughout. The Special effects are realy good despite its modest budget for a film of this sort, and the acting is good enough for what the film is. There is a nice little twist at the end of the film, but apart from that its a typical haunted house in space movie with boogey men...and disturbing ones at that...very nice creature effects. I would reccomend this film to fans of sci fi horror who might appreciate what is a good addition to the genre...however non sci fi fans might not enjoy it as much.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Sci Fi, 17 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Prometheus is a true Science FICTION movie! it's gritty, it's intense, thought provoking and at times disturbing... just how science fiction should be. Although not a direct prequel to Alien... it belongs to the mythology... it is the back story of the species and what may appear to be their creators.

If you have read Ian Von Danikens Chariots Of The Gods or subscribe to ancient astronaut theory(an increasingly popular subject)which the films story is influenced by you will love this movie, and no matter how ridiculous you may view those theorys they make perfect ingredients for science FICTION.
To reiterate its a science FICTION MOVIE not a documentary or religious propoganda piece

The movies own creators had hinted we would find out the answers to the questions we had originally from Alien in 1979, however we dont get many answers, which to some negative reviews is a detriment to the film, myself and many others feel this is a strong point... dont pull the curtain all the way back, just enough to get us thinking... which is the beauty of a great sci fi movie. Some answers are given with ambigous explanations and new questions arise... sadly this has confused some who are incapable of or dislike critical thinking, for me and many others this wets the appetite for part two... i am in no doubt a sequel was planned from the beginning.

The movie is a visual masterpiece, having seen it four times... twice in 3d.... twice in 2d, i can say it looks just as breathtaking in either format(cant wait to see the high def blu ray version)The accompanying soundtrack is as good as any in the franchise, and the best iv heard in a movie in recent years.

Like every single movie ever made though and movies yet to be made there are some flaws, but not enough to stop you enjoying what is a great science fiction film. there is minor issues with pacing and editing... and this is my only problem with the film, an extended cut on blu ray should sort out minor issues and make it more coherent for the massess...maybe.
Michael fassbender is brilliant as android david8, would certainly like to see more of what he got up to in an extended cut of the film.

In an age when hollywood is churning superhero movies out every other month its refreshing to get a movie like prometheus, sadly the spoon feeding fest that is superhero franchises has left many audiences frustrated at the lack of spoon in prometheus.

If you are expecting a rehash of Alien... which we have seen over and over, then you will be majorly let down as this is not a xenomorph runs amok part 50, ellen ripleys story has been told... the alien mythology and universe is bigger than any one character, and i hope we continue to get to explore it.

I will reiterate again this is true science FICTION, thank you Sir Ridley Scott for returning to the genre
