A tour de force?, 26 Sep 2006
Until a friend lent me his copy of this book I had hitherto been unaware of it or indeed of the author himself.
In it he explores the many issues raised by the rising tide of global and national extremist Islamism in such measured terms that it reads like a John Le Carre novel. Sadly though, this is not a work of fiction, it is a sholarly work full of chilling facts presented in such a way as to as to offend none but the often quoted extremists themselves. Having effectively foretold the events of 9/11 in an article for The Times the very morning of those atrocities, his insights give special meaning to the dichotomy of approach to the issues raised recently by The Pope on the one hand and his Archbishop, Cardinal Cormack Murphy O'Connor on the other.
Above all it is an absolutely gripping read. Dare one say a tour de force?
