It is just a personal thing but I found that this - of all five of the LOTR, Hobbit films - film got a bit tied up in trying to be more than it ought. Almost as if it was 'filled' with unnecessary asides and scenes simply to fill time and buff up the story. That it has a 'to be contined-type' ending just added to the disappointment of the fillers. (After I see the third installment I'll be able to tell if it was worth the filling or as I believe at the moment perhaps they should have settled for a two part series as against trying to get another blockbuster trilogy out of what is, after all, a very slim tome.)
As usual though, I found all the actors and their characters very engaging and thus think it is still well worth watching. It may lack the "re-watchability" of the LOTR trilogy and the first Hobbit installment but that will be something to think about after I've watched it for a second and probably third time. Yes, I do have a lot of time on my hands.
To conclude: Worth watching? Yes but the weakest of the series so far. Here's hoping that it stays the weakest.

4.0 out of 5 stars They found the Elysian Fields in a Pentagram, 26 Mar 2014
This review is from: Elysium (Blu-ray)
Firstly, I have to say I found there to be no "shaky-camera" issues whatsoever and cannot understand why anyone would complain thus.
This is an action movie at heart and whilst it hints through fairly loose metaphors at current societal conditions throughout the world it can generally be seen to be aimed at the current South African society of a few have-everythings and a vast majority of have-nothings - the generality coming from the seriously OTT main antagonist, Agent Kruger,a South African loon whose love for killing and mayhem is his reason for being; indeed, it might be said that he aligns himself with the Elites of Elysium simply to get 'legitimate' targets and some vitally needed "repairs" when required. So while there does exist a 'morality' lesson it does not control the viewer at all.
I have read quite a bit about the two leads acting in the film. Well, yes, Matt Damon does give his usual solid performance - is he in fact starting to become "Matt Damon" in every film as were John Wayne, Cary Grant and Mickey Rooney, Doris Day, etc. in their heydays - but Jodie Foster hac been given some unfair criticism over her portrayal of the character, Secretary of Defence Delacourt. She was quite obviously intended to be just as OTT but in a more clinical manner as Kruger but it is her stilted intonation and language which seems to have come in for the most stick. However, I found it highly credible as Foster is obviously portraying a character whose first language is French - to the degree that even though fluent in English she still thinks in "French" - hence emphases etc, are not exactly where we might expect them. I would simply say, "Well done Jodie."
It would be hard to expound further upon why this was an enjoyable movie which has received some unfair criticism without spoiling the actual story, so I shan't. Suffice to say it's a worthwhile watch.
Just as a warning for those who "know" these things: I am "David Thomson," a simple viewer not "David Thomson" the noted film critic so my views are not the learned views thereof!
Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Sequel, 18 Mar 2014

This is one of my all-time favourite movies (along with the original American Graffiti). Absolutely brilliant music and a fabulous cast make this one of the greatest sequels of all time. In Blu-Ray multiply that by 100. An awesome televisual experience.

A simple male to male lead which means I no longer have a 10m cable sitting behind the telly, much tidier and cleaner reception (TalkTalk TV). Very happy.

100 super chillout tunes - about threequarters of which I'd never heard before but I am way too old for Ibiza so that's no real surprise - I love to plug into my iPod and just snooze with this projecting sun, sand and warmth into my frozen mind.

What can be said about these: pick the amount of vouchers you wish to purchase, chose your design (some designs are set to specific amounts so be aware), pay up and print out. Job done, happy "giftee"! That said, my Mum got the giftcard option which was sent to her (it could be sent to any addressee) in a very smart giftbox and would definitely say that in future this is the style I will chose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smart Case, 30 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very smart case which holds the Blackberry mobile very snugly and safely. As it was for my wife I'll mention that she would prefer the actual holder to be made of purple - the assumption being that it is the colour of the case - plastic as against the grey used, that's a fairly minor 'fault' at best but it must cost it a star on 'customer approval' grounds. All in all a very good case.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOTW Goes Digital, 30 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having had this album (the original not the anniversary edition) since in came out in 'record', tape and cd (lost it somewhere) I decided it was time to put it on my iPod. Still great, though I'll admit it's one of those albums I'll only listen to every now and again. I do wonder if it's been 'cleaned up' again though (the original cleaning occuring when the cd edition was released) because it seems to lack the grittiness I remember from the PROPER album; that's two 12" plastic discs and using both sides for those too young to remember.
As a retired teacher I'd also recommend it to English teachers looking for an alternative method to introduce the H.G.Wells classic as, unlike both the 1953 and 2005 Hollywood versions, it sticks closer to the original story, without any great depth.
Great sound and the "Ulla" remains one of the classic alien calls.
