The Apostle [DVD] [1997]
The Apostle [DVD] [1997]
Dvd ~ Robert Duvall

5.0 out of 5 stars I always called you Jesus, you always called me Sonny, 15 Feb 2014
This review is from: The Apostle [DVD] [1997] (DVD)
Robert Duvall gives an extraordinary performance as an evangelical preacher in the southern states of America who catches his wife cheating, takes revenge and then goes on the run with nothing but the clothes on his back, going where the Lord leads him. Duvall was oscar nominated and how he did not win i do not know because without doubt this is one of the greatest characterizations in the history of motion pictures. Add to that the fact that he wrote, directed and produced it over several years and you will realise what a tour de force this is. I was trying to write a script of my own when this film first came out and i was so impressed with the conciseness of the writing and the beauty and purity of the story that i wrote to Duvall and asked him for advice. Someone, i dont know if it was him, wrote back, not with advice but with a signed photo. The man is a class act and this film is an absolute classic.

Chinese Tibetan Buddhist [DVD]
Chinese Tibetan Buddhist [DVD]
Dvd ~ Artist Not Provided
Offered by EliteDigital UK
Price: 17.16

1.0 out of 5 stars no stars, 14 Jan 2014
For a start change the title to TIBET FOR THE TIBETANS, and then get the Tibetan people to remake the film themselves. To call it 'chinese tibetan buddhist' is a bit like making a film about Russia in 1941 after the Nazi invasion and calling it "Hitler's russian soldier." Zero stars to a feeble-minded invading force of culture destroyers.

3.0 out of 5 stars a bit light, 14 Jan 2014

The man himself is serenity on legs and he exudes deep wisdom learnt from living. The documentary is ok but a bit light and under an hour long. It's mostly one for the devotees. We hear a lot from other people telling us how great the man is but we hear precious little from the man himself. A bit like watching a documentary on Elvis with a lot of people saying what a great singer he was but without including any music. We see him wandering around a lot and sitting meditating a lot, but there's also a lot of padding. His early life is interesting and this is told in animation, and his life choices call for a lot of admiration. Im not sorry i bought it, i just felt if they are pointing a camera at the guy then at least translate what he says and ask him some questions. They only translate a couple of sentences in an hour, So i am left having to take the word of a lot of monks as to whether he was a wise master or a lazy old so and so. But i mmust admit that simply watching him did have an effect on me and the Tibetans do have a way of leaving me feeling elevated spiritually and in the presence of great goodness. And fortunately one of the devotees is the Dalai Lama, so thankfully i don't only need to rely on the word of Richard 'im-only-doing-casting-sessions-if-she-is-topless' Gere.

The Hunt (Jagten) [DVD]

4.0 out of 5 stars At times brilliant,at other times hugely frustrating, 13 Jan 2014

This review is from: The Hunt (Jagten) [DVD] (DVD)
The title of the film refers not to the deer who the group of friends hunt at the beginning, but to what one of them experiences subsequently when he becomes falsely accused of touching a child. She gets him into trouble because he hurts her highly sensitive feelings when he rejects a little present she has made for him. In trying to do the proper thing by keeping a 'healthy distance' between childrena and adults Mads Mikkelson inadvertently sets off a chain of events that leaves him completely outcast from a community he was a once popular and trusted member of.We see how untrained gossipy adults are allowed to ask leading questions to a child who can then condemn a man just with a nod of the head without once needing to go into details of what he actually did. The community live by the rule of 'no smoke without fire' and 'guilty until proved innocent' and 'children always tell the truth.' Mikkelson is superb and so for the most part is the script. However,it is frustating how many times the writer seems unable to find the next line in a scene and so just leaves everything hanging in mid air and we are left to imagine for ourselves what was said next and by whom. There are also many scenes you might expect to be there which aren't, such as a scene which surely would have taken place between Mikkelson and his hunting mates where they have it out with him or at least get his side of it, or a scene between the child and her parents where they try to find out what happened to her, rather than just the snippet we see of the mother telling her, "It really happened and maybe you just forgot it." This woman seemed quite intelligent and yet we don't once see her ask "what happened?" We just have to assume she asked and leave it at that. There is no resolution to leaving important scenes absent or leaving them hanging in mid air and while this may be a popular artistic tendency in films, please dont do it at the bloody end when we have watched for 2 hours and it is a key scene when the father of the child goes to meet with his accused friend to talk for the first time since he began to realise that maybe they all got it wrong. We are all dying to hear him say "i think we made a mistake," but instead they cut it off in silence mid-scene and jump ahead one year. Yes we knew the man now had doubts about his little child's accusations, but we want to see him admit it to his former best friend whose life he has since helped make a misery. So in my humble opinion the end was spoilt by this, and left me feeling a bit frustrated at the playful artiness of the script when at that moment it needed to be blunt and to the point. The epilogue after that scene had a tacked-on feel but was clearly felt to be needed purely because of the poor and unresolved feeling left by the previous scene.Would have been 5 stars all the way except for this.

5.0 out of 5 stars bleak and unrelenting vision but something beautiful about it, 9 Dec 2013

This review is from: The Road [DVD] (DVD)
Of all the 'end days' movies and post apocalyptic scenarios being put forth in movies like 'World war z,' 'Oblivion,' and '28 days later,' this is by far the most powerful and in my opinion the most realistic and likely scenario to follow any massive natural catastrophe, whether it be from asteroids, meteors, comets, earthquakes, pole shifts or nuclear war enforced winters. Right from the start we are told, without being shown, that all the animals and most of the plants and people are dead, and the planet is dying from a series of natural disasters. After his wife chooses to kill herself rather than wait to be raped by marauding strangers, Viggo mortenson is left alone with his young son to wander through the American wilderness looking for food and like-minded others who may or may not be out there, but all the way through this film looms the more likely threat of meeting gangs of robbers, rapists and would-be murderers intent on cannibalism to survive. The film is neither glossy nor high tech in its show of devastation, but is rather grim and gloomy. But what saves this from indulging in an overwhelmingly morose and cynical outlook is the beautiful caring relationship between Viggo and his young son as they run, hide, explore and sometimes find little moments of happiness in all the apparent hopelessness that surrounds them. The only thing i dont agree with is when he says right at the beginning that all the animals have died, because in truth, if a few people have survived then for sure a few animals, however small they might be, would also have survived. But i give this 5 stars for acting, script, direction and realism.

2.0 out of 5 stars Die hard minus the yipee-ky-aye, 25 Nov 2013
This review is from: Elysium [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
The movie starts promisingly for about 20 minutes as the initial set up is good, and this writer/director has clearly researched the rumours of actual 'elite' plans for this planet and included some, but not all, of them. And so we have a completely polluted planet full of sickness and despair, just like now only 50 years on. We also have the cyborg police and highly weaponised human super-soldier agents of the elite, plus slave-like conditions for those left on Earth while the controllers live in an off-world created nirvana-like reality, with 100% cures for all sicknesses for those who live there, and only those with the bar codes in their skin allowed to travel up there. There is also the subtlely touched upon notion that some of these elite, though human in appearance, are in fact far from it, though this is never explored in a story that presents this possible future scenario but then races down a very dark, narrow-minded alley with a cliched script and the usual die-hard type scenarios, with Matt Damon substituting for Bruce Willis in the lead and Alice Braga taking the obligatory secondary role as helpless female in distress. The main part of the new world order plan that this movie overlooks is the enforced depopulation programme using created viruses and 'enhanced' natural disasters via weather wars, and the reasons for all that.None of that is mentioned here.
In this film the elite simply nonsensically abandon a priceless but polluted Earth leaving behind an over-populated planet as if they have no control over this, when the reality is right now they are orchestrating it all deliberately. Jodie Foster plays the Hilary Clinton new world order role as the wicked witch of Elysium and would-be president, but her concentration unfortunately is all in her clipped English accent and none into the actual acting, and this is the worst i have ever seen her.Matt Damon has been in the gymn and is solid and plays his usual Matt Damon/Jason Bourne character. Wagner Moura, so brilliant in Elite Squad, is under-used but very good in what he does in a role unrecogniseable from that of the BOPE officer he played in the Brazilian hit movie. The story ultimately takes far too many short cuts to be anything remotely epic and has too many almost impossible situations resolved at the last second leaving you safe in the knowledge that this story will just move along speedily yet predictably to its slightly tedious conclusion. It's a shame because it could have been a classic if more trouble had been taken over creating an original story rather than playing safe by mimicking other $100 million blockbusters that had gone before.

5.0 out of 5 stars great film about a unique individual, 17 Nov 2013

This review is from: Lemmy [DVD] (DVD)
I didnt buy this as the world's greatest motorhead fan, but nevertheless i thought it was really excellent in the many levels of the man it shows, thanks to the astute editing and to Lemmy's co-operation over a long period of time. It is a highly detailed and multi-situational portrait of a thoroughly decent old school gent who also just happens to be the hard drinking hard drug taking driving force behind one of the hardest, most powerful bands in history, a band who has some of the most loyal fans i have ever seen. The band's chosen image kept me at a distance for years because i was more of a mod and i still dislike the war-pig t shirts Lemmy designed for the band's fans to wear. But while these appear somewhat demonic, there is nothing demonic about Lemmy, who seems unwilling to compromise his personal morality, ideals or ethics for anybody, and since he is now aged 68, i don't think he ever will.A very impressive individual and a wise thinker.By the way, the extras on the second disc are long and include some live Motorhead at a Berlin festival, and more extended interviews, making this all together great value.

1.0 out of 5 stars shoddy lies and mistaken rewriting of history, 11 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
10 minutes into this 48 minute dvd and still they have said nothing worth hearing and shown nothing worth seeing. We see a lot of cheap, shoddy animation and then a lot of scholarly talking heads who know nothing about the truth of ancient Egypt. They even talk about the Great pyramid while showing a shot of the second pyramid and then show a decorated sarcophagus not from the great pyramid as evidence that it was a tomb. Have they ever been inside the great pyramid? If they had they would know without a shadow of doubt that this was not a tomb. Anyone wishing to see a worthwhile dvd on ancient Egypt buy "The pyramid code" and avoid all other history/discovery channel type nonsense because it is almost 100% lies and mistaken assumptions.
I recommend Dolores Cannon books "the convoluted universe" books 1 and 2 for more accurate accounts of past lives in ancient Egypt and how the pyramids were really built. And also to study the work of Antoine Gigal.

3.0 out of 5 stars absolute classic version of Mr Rain. 4 stars for that alone, 9 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not the perfect tracklisting, and some ruinous non-singing of songs that Lou Reed used to be able to sing but apparently can't or forgot how to. However this is the only live release by the band in their brief reformation in the 90's and they recapture the magic during a phenomenal 'Mr Rain,' a song which becomes an extended jam between Reed and the supreme Cale that transcends the original recording. No Sister Ray on the dvd and venus in furs ruined by Lou's non-singing,but White Light and Heroin are the other highlights.Cale sings Waiting for my man, for some reason, but he can at least carry a tune.
I think it's worth buying just to see them working the riffs together, but dont expect the same melodies to shine as they did on the original recordings, which are absolute classics, expecially the 1st album.

3.0 out of 5 stars There is a big fat hole in the centre of this, 5 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Scandal [DVD] (DVD)
Clearly this film was written and made without full knowledge of the facts, because certain things that needed to be addressed are avoided or merely played with toyingly but never stated or explained outright, which leaves a big fat hole in the middle where ethics and credibility lie waiting in vain for a judgement. That Christine Keeler had sex with a middle-aged politician and a middle-aged Russian diplomat and a few others is not up for debate, but there is no attempt to offer any explanation as to why. Why would a stunningly beautiful 18 year old woman choose to sleep with plain old married tory John Profumo and some middle-aged Russian? The film paints a picture of it NOT being for money, or presents, or fun, or affection, or notoriety, or for MI5, or because of manipulation by Ward or Profumo. So it must have been sexual attraction and desire, right? No, apparently it wasn't that either, because the film shows Keeler yawning as Profumo gives her his all in bed. So my only conclusion is that the film makers went ahead and made this film covering all the benefits Christine Keeler DIDN'T get out of sleeping with those men, but did not offer one single solid benefit she DID get out of sleeping with them. And that is why there is a big fat hole in the middle of the film and why ultimately it fails. Because it doesn't tell the truth, and the reason why it doesn't is because the writer and director didn't know enough to make a judgement as to the difference between truth and fiction in this story and so chose to cover as many bases as they could, thus letting certain people off the hook for their actions and never going beyond scratching the surface of Christine Keeler.
