This is a superb product: robust, well-made and reliable. It was a gift for a nephew and he absolutely loves it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction, 15 Jun. 2014
The book is fluently written and provides an excellent overview of the characteristics and challenges of listening in a foreign language before covering a broad range of practical teaching activities. Excellent.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the tripe, I mean hype., 11 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: These Were the Earlies (Audio CD)
The Earlies must have made friends a lot more easily than they made music. Particularly music journos. Like another disappointed reviewer, I bought this based on reviews and recommendations (after buying the first three Alabama 3 albums). This album is weak, thin, boring and dull. I couldn't bring myself to listen to it more than twice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a single laugh in the whole book - press reviews written by McEwan's pals?, 8 Nov. 2012
This review is from: Solar (Paperback)
I agree with all of the comments about how difficult it is to care about the uncaring buffoon at the centre of this novel. I'd also like to stress, though, that this book is utterly unfunny. I only read it because it was a gift and the friend who gave it to me wanted to know what I thought of it. It is a total waste of time. Pathetic.

Vocabulary Myths: Applying Second Language Research to Classroom Teaching
Vocabulary Myths: Applying Second Language Research to Classroom Teaching
by Keith S. Folse
Edition: Paperback
Price: £23.03

5.0 out of 5 stars The best short book about the teaching and learning of vocabulary, 18 April 2012
Well, one of them, anyway. Folse is not some Applied Linguistics troll pointlessly smashing cherished but misguided beliefs about how learners acquire vocabulary knowledge. No, his smashing of those cherished but misguided beliefs has a point: to keep what works from older methods and approaches while adding more activities based on more recent research into lexical development.

The book is packed with ideas and debates that will enliven anyone's thoughts about how much vocabulary learners need, what types of vocabulary are most useful and to whom, how much time is required, which ways of learning and teaching new vocabulary are more effective, and so on. On a personal note, I am extremely glad to see how he uses the research to show that "working out the meaning from context" is an enabling skill for readers, not an effective way of learning vocabulary.

Strongly recommended to colleagues who see the quick development of a good vocabulary as essential for students who are trying to learn English grammar and discourse skills.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much self-justification and whining, 22 Nov. 2011
Presumably she'll never eat lunch again because she's constantly bitching with her mouth full. Too much venom and not enough real revelation, probably because she wanted to hedge her bets in case there was a possibility of future nontime nosh.

Outside The Law (Hors La Loi) [DVD]
Outside The Law (Hors La Loi) [DVD]
Dvd ~ Jamel Debbouze

5.0 out of 5 stars A tremendous crime family drama, 8 Jun. 2011
Outside the Law is a historical crime family drama strongly reminiscent in tone and visuals to The Godfather and the "young Vito" passages of Godfather II, as well as the guerrilla activism of "Michael Colins" . The film starts with the eviction of a farming family from their land in Algeria in the 20s. The titles roll over newsreel reports of the Victory in Europe celebrations in Paris on May 8, 1945 then cuts to the French security forces' massacre at Sétif of around 6,000 Algerians on the same day. The film pulls no punches in its portrayal of French injustice and brutality, or the ruthlessness - and cruelty - of the Algerian nationalists.

The acting (Jamel Debbouze, Roschdy Zem, Sami Bouajila, all familiar from the same director's film Days of Glory), pace of action, storytelling and period atmosphere all make this tremendous film one that only those allergic to subtitles will not enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to care about the characters, 27 April 2011
The popularity of this book mystifies me. I couldn't continue (living) after about 50 pages, and had to lie to the friend who had given me the book as a gift. Perhaps it was given as a gift to all those 5-star reviewers?

Black Out
Black Out
by John Lawton
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars A surfeit of amazing coincidences, 24 Mar. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Black Out (Paperback)
This would be a three and a half star review if that was possible. Black Out is well written with excellent period detail lightly applied - there are none of the moments when the author's research sticks out so much that it interrupts the story. The story is standard mystery mcguffin - bad goodies against good baddies trying to find something evil that will be used for good ends. Or something. Unfortunately, some key plot turns rely on huge coincidence or amazingly lucky guesses, which weaken the believability of the plot. So, 3 for story and 4 for writing. Well worth reading, though, and I bought and am enjoying the follow up, Old Flames.
