5.0 out of 5 stars Can't get enough of these sessions, 11 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I rushed to play this dvd, upon receiving it, with a bit of worry that it wouldn't meet my expectations of maintaining the level of the 5 previous issues. No need to worry, as it is a new masterpiece.

If you like the sensation of been invited into a warm and friendly place where the other attendants happen to be world-class musicians that truly love that music sung with the heart (without vocal artifacts) and played with acoustic instruments, then this is your collection. Go and buy it.

From the technical point of view, image (both quality and adequacy) is excellent and sound (2 ch only) gets even better than previous sessions. You can distinctly hear each and avery note from any single instrument.

My only concern now is that I will have to wait too long for the coming Series 7 (I don't even consider that it couldn't exist)

This review is from: Planxty: Live 2004 [DVD] (DVD)
For anyone that was moved by Planxty's music since their first album "Planxty" is a delight to see them performing together again. As for the DVD itself, sound is good, image could be a better and the songs selection could have been a bit better as well. I missed some of their great songs, and I'm sure they played it in that concert but were left out of this DVD. Pity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sessions, 13 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm a big fan of the Transatlantic Sessions Series, and avidly purchased this last one. Looking at the evolution of this collection of DVDs, the first thing that must be said is that the production quality has improved tremendously. When you compare the 4:3 VHS-quality of the first Series with this last delivery, you realize how much things have improved in this side (Even if it's only two channel sound -PCM or DD-).
On the musicianship side, this DVD is fantastic. The "House Band" are as good as always and the guests are first class musicians (no less than Alison Krauss, Bela Fleck, Eric Bibb, Sam Bush, a surprising Sarah Jarosz, and many others). I have to see it a few more times yet to look for some of this "magical moments" that are present in other sessions of this magnificent collection (as when in the Series 1, Jay Ungar play duo with Aly Bain). There are also some excellent news on the "House Band" with such talents as John Doyle and John McCusker.

Still, this DVD could be a bit better (and I hope it'll be on the Series 6): I wish they could find a new place (they are repeating the Series 4 location), because part of the charm is to look at the house and the surronding scenery. Also, they could change the presentation for each session (they're reutilizing the Series 4's), and be a bit more generous with those moments when musicians chat in a relaxed way, or doing some rehersals. And I hope they could bring again some of the fantastic girls that performed on previous sessions (Julie Fowlis, Karen Matheson, Emily Smith, Jenna Reid, Fiona Kennedy...and enroll Karan Casey, please!). They bring much energy and joy to the series. At least, in Series 5 you have Sharon Shannon in the "joyful playing department".

Problem is that if the improve, I would need a 6-star rating from Amazon...

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful performances, 2 Feb 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent selection of beautiful songs, most of them traditional and a few modern ones, performed by excellent musicians. Some of then very well known (such as producers Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas, Dan Tyminsky, Danny Thompson, and many others) and some others lesser known but keeping up with the level imposed by the masters. To me, the highest mark goes for the incredibly sweet rendition of "The King's Shilling" performed by James Taylor and Karan Casey (the best voice of our days, for my taste). Only for this song, this 2-DVD set is worth the price.

On the technical side, image quality is superb, both in lighting and the quality/adequacy of the takes. As for the sound, it's excellent. You can disctictly hear each instrument or voice, which is quite an accomplishment as everything is purely acoustic and performers are very close to each other, and in a close environment. But, only Dolby Stereo or PCM Stereo are available. There is no DTS or Dolby 5.1 options. But don't let this minor shortcoming weigh in your purchasing decision.
