Suicide Squad: The Inside Story of a Football Firm
Suicide Squad: The Inside Story of a Football Firm

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent book - interesting but repetetive, 11 Feb. 2008
I bought this book because i am a football fan who has become interested in hooligansim after witnessing various hooligan incidents at my local club.
This book is a decent buy for anyone interested in Burnley or in English hooliganism either at club or international level. However, it is not really one for those who enjoy quality literature, good vocabulary and puctuation - yet this somehow helps to add to the real and genuine nature of this book.
This book follows, Andrew "Pot" Porter in his journey into hoolignaism and we hear about his battles with other hooligan mobs at club and country level. It also gives interesting insights into other areas of football life, such as stadia and football policing.
At first the descriptions of the firm fights are entertaining and even humourous however due to the authors limited limited literary skills the book soon becomes repetitive and can seem like you are reading the same story over and over again as each different game is described in exactly the same manner.
Therefore i would reccommend purchasing this book if you are a burnley fan, interested in football hooliganism and terrace culture or if you enjoy movies like football factory and green street. Andy Porter's story is interesting as is the development of the Suicide Squad!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ville not Him, 11 Sept. 2007
This review is from: Summer Wine [CD 1] (Audio CD)
I got this single purely because i love Him [Ville's band] and love Ville's vocals. I was slightly disappointed at it's quality especially considering that Ville has sung some great cover versions such as Wicked game and dont fear the reaper. However, i think this is a rather bog standard pop song and whilst Ville's vocals are instantly recognisable it sound's nothing like Him. I expected a great combination of diet goth vocals with melodic female input but it didn't live up to my expectations.
Not bad by any means, just not good either.

4.0 out of 5 stars HIM's forgotten album., 10 Sept. 2007
I got into HIM with their album "Love metal" and have since bought all of their other releases except this one. I was at first not interested in buying this CD because: there are few if any songs from this on any best of compilations, the band do not seem to play any of the songs from this album live and after reading an article about the history of HIM in a music magazine i read that this was a disappointing release which was given 5 out of 10. I asumed that this album was simply not upto HIM's high standards and therefore i decided to avoid this album and stick with the band's more recent and most popular offerings. However, when i saw it on Amazon for £1.50 in the used and new section i thought i might as well give it a go even just to complete my HIM collection.
I was surprised at the quality of this CD. The songs are all strong and there are no fillers as such. Although all the songs are easily identifiable as HIM this record sounds considerably different to albums they have put out in the past. Whilst all the songs are easy both to listen to and to enjoy it is much less pop influenced than some of the band's more recent albums but it is still clearly HIM and contains songs about love, death and darkness. It is not easy to categorise as Goth or Emo or Metal. Quite simply, it sounds like HIM with Ville Valo's melodic vocals and a selection of rock/metal guitars, drums and keyboards.
Standout tracks include the fast "Heartache every moment" as well as "Please don't let it go" and "Pretending" however this album has more to offer than just these fast paced songs with slower ballads such as "Beautiful."
All in all i was very pleased with my purchase for £1.50. It doesn't have standout singles that are going to be hits but if you can get it cheap it is certainly worth the listening time even if it does take a few goes to really get in to it. This album does not deserve the review i read in a magazine that claimed it was disappointing. Whilst, i would agree that it is not the best HIM album ever, and that new fans should start elsewhere, i would say that it is a must buy for diehard HIM fans and should not be forgiven. If you are new to the band try either "love metal" or "razorblade romance." If you are not then give this a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly gripping introduction to prison break, 1 Sept. 2007
This is an truely amazing box set. It is a brilliantly gripping introduction to the prison break saga and follows the story of Michael Schofield [Wentworth Miller] purposely getting sent to prison in order to break out his brother who has been set up for murder by the state. Whilst being a fairly simple plot the story is thoroughly gripping and keeps the watcher on the edge of their seat. It is nearly impossible just to watch one episode of this series as you will be desperate to see the fate of Schofield and Co. in the tense cliff-hanger circumstances that a typical episode always finishes in. Throughout there is outstanding acting from a cast that was generally relatively unknown and it is clear that certain actors from this series are destined for big big things in the not so far future. In short, i would recommend this series to anyone whatever their likes and would say that it is best to start here rather than jumping straight to the second series. Hope you enjoy as much as i did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first!, 26 Aug. 2007
I think that this is an amazing second series of the Prison Break saga. It is utterly gripping and keeps the watcher on the edge of their seat - perhaps even bettering the almost insurmountable heights of the first series. The series follows Michael Schofield and Co. after they have busted out of prison and follows their attempts to avoid being captured and slaughtered by the state's villainous agents. Whilst the prisoners escapes and continued time at large is a tad unrealistic it is thoroughly entertaining and leaves you both scared and excited. It is one of those box sets that is so gripping you will find it hard not to watch episode after episode. There is fantastic acting throughout especially considering all the actors were previously lesser known individuals before Prison break. Acting highlights include Wentworth Miller [Michael Schofield] and the nation's new favourite villain, Robert Knepper [T-Bag], both of which will now undoubtedly go on to become huge stars. However, £60 (or cheaper on amazon) is a huge amount of money to spend on a box set that was previously shown free of charge on TV and is only a worthwhile purchase if you truely enjoyed the series. Instead, you could rent it for around £5 if you can watch the whole thing reasonably quickly. In short, i would say that this was a greatly entertaining series however i would recommend seeing the first series first.
Roll on the 3rd series!

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate ultimatum, 22 Aug. 2007
This film provides an amazing ending to a great trilogy. It is an action packed thriller and there is not a second where there is not a tense scene that keeps the audience at the edge of their seat. After seeing the first two Bourne films i was looking forward to seeing this movie and it exceeded all expectations. Put simply, this is the ultimate ending to the Bourne saga and is were all of the unanswered questions and mysteries from the first two films are answered. Although i would recommend seeing the other two movies first this is the pick of the bunch and even though i had almost forgotten the other two films i was not left behind by this movie. It follows the story of Jason Bourne to it's conclusion and includes car chases, gun fights ,and my personal favourite, Bourne disarming and beating-up a load of gun-wielding blokes. Bourne is played by Matt Damon who does a great job, making Bourne into a very interesting and intriguing character. Although this movie can be a little complicated it is thoroughly gripping and is very tense and action packed. In short, it is the perfect ending to the bourne trilogy. It is a must see for anyone who watched and enjoyed the first two movies or likes action thrillers such as James Bond. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Eat me, Drink me!, 18 Aug. 2007
This review is from: Eat Me, Drink Me (Audio CD)
At first i decided not to buy this album as i had read many negative reviews both in the music press and on amazon and i didn't think the single was that great. I then saw an advert for Marilyn Manson's december 07 tour and after buying tickets i decided i better had buy the album so i would be familiar with the new music that he will undoubtedly play at those concerts. I was surprised at how good the album was considering the slating that it recieved from a number of different sources. "If i was your vampire" is a good start to the album and shows that MM is entering a new phase musically by entering the "Vampire" genre that he has previously made an effort to avoid. This is one of the best songs on the album and recreates MM's unique sound - gloomy, gothic, electronic and industrial. The album continues very strongly with two very catchy tracks in the form of "Putting holes in happiness" and "The red carpet grave." Indeed, these first 3 tracks are among the best but can be matched with tracks 6 and 8, "Are you the rabbit?" and strangely the single "Heart shaped glasses" which amazingly grows and grows on you and which i would now place among some of MM's best work. Most of the other tracks are also decent and although they are slightly more forgettable the album is generally very strong and in my view does not deserve the negative criticism that it recieved. In short, i would say that this is a must buy for all Marilyn Manson fans who should not be put off by the review and that this would also be a good album for people who like bands such as "Nine Inch Nails", "Depeche Mode" or "A perfect circle." However, despite saying that i would recommend a new listener to start with MM's greatest hits album, "Lest we forget", as it is a better introduction to the band.
Finally, i would just like to say that you should give this album a few listens to before deciding wheteher you love or hate it.

Fossil FS4170 Gents Black IP Automatic Watch
Fossil FS4170 Gents Black IP Automatic Watch

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice watch!, 15 Aug. 2007
The first thing to say about this watch is that it is very handsome. It works very well when dressed casually but also fits in fine for more formal wear, such as with a suit. I was first attracted to it because of it's unusual black metal strap which works very well with it's black face. Another thing about this watch that i like is that it is very easy to use and to set-up the time and the date. Additionally, it comes in a nice presentation tin which means it would be good as a present etc. However, there are some drawbacks i would like to warn you about. For a start, it is quite heavy, which is not a problem for me but may be for others. Secondly (and perhaps obviously), it has no light and no alarm. Although, this is somewhat expected i have previously owned analogue watches whose hands were visable in the dark through some special watch technology and i was slightly disappointed this watch didn't "glow in the dark". Thirdly and perhaps most importantly this watch is sent out for someone with boxer-sized arms so expect to need links removed, which can be inconveinent. Finally, i am also not sure of the purpose of the purple spinning component (cosmetic or otherwise?). Nevertheless, it is still a beautiful looking watch. Buy it now if you like the look of it, live in a city where it is easy to get links removed and have a mobile phone with an alarm and a clock that lights up (for bedtime use). Enjoy!

Apple iPod 30GB Video/Black (5th Generation)
Apple iPod 30GB Video/Black (5th Generation)

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully finished - excellent ... but temperamental, 13 Aug. 2007
I had never had an iPod before i got this 30GB video iPod and am generally very happy with it. It is a thing of beauty and the person who came up with the design should be made a saint. It is beautifully finished and i love the glass-like material it is made from as well as the control wheel. It is also incredibly easy to use along with iTunes which is also amazing - both as a way of legally downloading music and podcasts as well as just being a brilliant way to digitally store and organise your music. Additionally, it is very easy to navigate around the iPod which conveniently stores songs by artist, album category etc. The video playback is also incredibly sharp however i would suggest that the screen is too small to truely appreciate a long movie on the iPod. Nevertheless, there are a few problems with it. Firstly, the battery life is not brilliant especially if you want to play games or video podcasts. Secondly, after paying £180 for the iPod i was a bit annoyed when i had to pay an extra £20 for a charger, you'd thing they stick one in the box for that price (i would recommend getting a cheap one of ebay ). Thirdly, they can also be extremely temperamental. I know lots of people whose iPods have broke and mine broke when i was exercising in the gym because apparently the hard-drive gets disconnected if it is shaken about too vigourously (e.g. exercise bike). So, due to this i would recommend buying your iPod from a retailer such as John Lewis who will give you a guarentee worth the paper that it is written on. Other than that it is a great product, a design-icon and must be the best MP3 on the market. Enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent plot - Decent actors - Disappointing result, 13 Aug. 2007
This review is from: Fracture [DVD] (DVD)
This a legal thriller with a simple but interesting idea. A mad man kills his wife and a young ambitious lawyer risks his career to get a prosecution against him. It is a decent plot, with decent characters, decent actors (in the form of Hopkins and Gosling) and a reasonably good twist to end with. However, it is only decent (hence the 3 stars). Somehow, it fails to excite. In no way is it gripping or awe inspiring. Instead it can be boring and predictable. When you have finished watching it i doubt you will think you have seen a great memorable movie that will have any impact on your life. In short, this is a decent fun movie and would be good who enjoys legal thrillers but i would urge caution on anyone who is not interested in legal films as it is not a particulaly great film and there are much better alternatives out at the moment. Sorry!
