5.0 out of 5 stars Really cannot rate this book highly enough, 30 July 2015

As I loved the first two books I expected to enjoy the final instalment. But, I think this book is even better. The description of every battle scene is so real. The character descriptions, of all the main protagonists is so detailed, you feel that you have known them for years. The outcomes just tear your heart apart, because the author has made each person so real, you really care what happens to them. And more importantly, it makes you want to do your own research, to read the accounts of this period, such is Russell's apparent feeling for history, that you catch his enthusiasm. My only regret is that the story has now come to an end.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant mix of Greek and Roman, 30 July 2015
This review is from: Gladiatrix (Paperback)
As a debut book, what a fantastic start. The heroine, Lysandra, may be a tad arrogant, but you can't help smiling at her and hoping she'll win out in the end. After all, she is a Spartan you know. The descriptions of the ludus, her training and the fight scenes are wonderful. Do yourself a favour and read this book, and the other two. You really won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Agrippa's life in one comprehensive volume, 29 Jun. 2015

Can't rate this book highly enough. Once again Lindsey Powell has given us the history of the subject in an easy readable style, but without dumbing down anything. The story of Agrippa is told alongside the rise of Augustus so that Agrippa's story is in context. I learned so much and would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Roman history, or history in general for that matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the course perspective, 26 April 2015

I read this book alongside doing the Coursera course. Fascinating, if fast, trip through the chronology of Rome's architecture highlighting some well known, and less well known, monuments. You don't need to do the course to enjoy this book, but if read before your trip to Rome, it will enhance your visit.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect book, 22 April 2015

What a wonderful book, an amazing tour of the last years of Hadrian, and those he took with him on his life's journey within the story. Hadrian's lifelong struggle to be a good Emperor, battling with his demons is so deftly wrought. Antinous' story had me in tears. I felt I was there watching everything first hand, such was the description of everything, the colour, the magnificence of the Imperial courts and homes, the battle and the blood. And the horror! Oh the horror, felt by everyone at the death of Antinous, by Vix both at his son's death and the battle of Judea and little Annia having to deal with Pedanias. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. My only sadness is that it's all over,so I will be starting from book one again soon, for a Kate Quinnathon!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ben Kane has done it again!!, 14 Mar. 2015

Ben Kane never disappoints. One feels empathy with Tullus, you want to know his story, and what the prophecy will mean to him eventually. In other words, one just has to go on to read Eagles At War, such is the way Ben makes you enter into the story and feel, hear and smell everything that happens. Do yourself a favour, read The Shrine then go on and read all of Ben's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lindsay Powell does it again, 29 Oct. 2014
As always, from this author, a fascinating book. It's an easy read, but at the same time, deals with interesting and sometimes very topical subjects in a manner that leaves the reader mulling over things long after that chapter is done. I often found myself thinking, wow, I didn't know, that! Highly recommended to all.
