5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Package For The Price., 22 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A great set for fans of the classic 'Universal Monsters' movies. This one being for the Invisible Man. Obviously, the best of the lot is the original with Claude Raines, but Vincent Price adds class to his attempt.

Worth the money for the completist fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Can You Call Yourself a Batman Fan, And Not Buy This?, 12 Jun. 2012
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
OK, stay back, keep control, stand forth, hold fast, go previous...I am about to make a very important announcement...

Phew, that's better!

What this is, after waiting since 1989, is the definitive JOKER figure from the movie BATMAN(1989), which starred Michael Keaton as BATMAN/Bruce Wayne and Jack Nicholson as The JOKER/Jack Napier. It is produced by the most famous 1/6 scale figure company on the whole planet, HOT TOYS and comes as a part of their growing DX range.

Now the name HOT TOYS will give you a good sense of what you can expect, right form the start. For years they have been at the very pinnacle of 1/6 scale figure production in terms of licences and quality. So then, coupled with the DX banner too, would lead you to expect something just a little bit special. My word, have they delivered!!

Where do I start with this? The packaging is thick and sturdy, dense cardboard sheeting, beautifully apparelled to signify that the JOKER is inside. It opens as do the rest of the DX range, almost like a book, but with an extra panel incorporating a magnetic closure at the right side. The next layer is contains a 'Bat Signal' type emblem laying on a thick foam and card base, the next layer contains the figure, firmly and safely enclosed in his custom cut section, which also houses other accessories including his Fedora. The next layer holds all the rest of his items and his base/stand. In total, he comes with his base, hat, overcoat, load hailer, gas mask, 4 extra hands, his cane, chattering teeth, long barrel gun, "BANG!" gun, a joker card, wads of dollar bills, his radio box and his acid shooting lapel 'bloom'

He also comes with the Hot Toys patented Parallel Rolling Eyes System, or PERS for short, which allows the owner to remove a panel at the back of the head and using a small joystick, move the eyes into different and life-like positions. Never before has this system been so well implemented than on this figure and on his companion piece, the accompanying BATMAN figure. Jack Nicholson has very expressive eyes, he can convey whole sentences of dialogue with just a look. Well, this figure needed PERS like no other and it really pays off.

I just cannot express exactly how good this figure is. When it eventually does sell out(and a figure this good definitely WILL sell out) it will only increase in value. There is a rumour of some sort of civilian 'Jack' version, but I cannot seem to find any actual and verifiably concrete source to confirm this. Also, looking back on the type of person Jack Nicholson has been, it has been something of a minor miracle to get him to allow his likeness to be used at all for this figure, and that alone has taken some 25 years to acquire.

I liked this so much that I bought two, one for me and one for my son.

The Dark Knight Movie Batman 1:6 Scale Deluxe Collector Figure
The Dark Knight Movie Batman 1:6 Scale Deluxe Collector Figure

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start.., 12 Jun. 2012
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
This is the DC Direct 1/6 scale version of the BATMAN adult collectible 'action' figure (I CANNOT STAND that term), from the film BATMAN: DARK KNIGHT. As such, and at first glance, that is exactly what you get.Masked head, long cape, armoured body suit, accessories, they all seem to be present and accounted. for.

If you are new to collecting 1/6 scale, fully posable, fabric costume figures and you wanted to 'dip your toe in the water' with this...

There is one thing you need to know first. There is nothing actually WRONG with this figure, however, DCD have decided, in their wisdom, to use their standard hero body. And there is nothing wrong with it as such. The only problem I have with it is that it is better utilised when used with figures like SUPERMAN, as it is tremendously muscular. So "What's wrong with superheroes being very muscular?" I hear you ask (hopefully..?), well, nothing if you are a 6 foot space alien in a blue suit, a red big cape and bright red boots. BATMAN is no such thing, he is just a very fit guy in an armoured costume so really, he should look like a very fit guy in his armoured costume, and not someone who has just returned from the beach, having just kicked sand in all the skinny guy's faces.

It almost looks as if BATMAN is wearing American football shoulder pads, he is that disproportionate around his chest and shoulders. It's a shame really. There always seems to be some kind of issue with the BATMAN figures From DCD. On the BATMAN BEGINS figure, the hands were way out of proportion and too big, and I do mean "Mickey Mouse" big. On the second tier DC heroes, maybe such things might be easier to overlook, but on BATMAN (a huge cash-cow for both Warner Brothers and DC Comics) there is no real excuse.

If a child collector bought this as a starting point, then I'd say...cautiously...OK. But I'd bet that it would not take long for such a one to start seeing the differences between this and other companies' figures.

If an adult collector buys this, it's still OK but I will assume that it is with the full knowledge of the figure's shortcomings, and that it is to complete a collection.

However as a straight toy, it's great but expensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Are you serious..? Amended review., 7 Jun. 2012

**** Review edited ****

Review of the figure...Brilliant. Beautiful tailoring, great extras (get the exclusive version if you can), well articulated and the finery of his suit is just superb. The 'webs' included in the package get a bit droopy after a while, but HIT TOYS do seem to have solved the problems with weak ankles that the 'red/blue suit' version had. Plus you get a really killer Tobey Maguire head sculpt in the box to mix up his look a little. Or you could buy another 1:6 scale body and use it on that.

A brilliant figure, surely one of HT's best.

Directed solely at the company that tried to pull this...

What a bargain, you think. You find a superb HOT TOYS 1/6 scale action figure of 'Black Suit' Spider-man for under £100. Who would not jump on that bargain.

And with postage, that's...erm wait, what? Another near £100 for P+P? No, I must have read it wrong. Nope, I did not read it of £199 barring a few pennies!

Who are these people trying to kid, what are they going to do...teleport it?

If something seems too good to be probably is. This, alas, is one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mega-Hit From HOT TOYS!, 20 May 2012
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
There is no question, this will be regarded as amongst HT's very best offerings. Is it without its own issues? No, of course there are some...this is a 12" figure created to look like a real person after all. But it certainly has a lot more plus points in its favour than it has negatives.

Lets examine the main points:

Can you look at this figure and instantly recognise the likeness in the face-sculpt? Very much a resounding YES. Now bare in mind that this is an area no larger that the head of your thumb, done from photos, memory and sheer manual skill. The nett result is extraordinary! I should also point out that for this figure, HOT TOYS did not use one of their stock bodies (of which they have several available to them) but started from scratch and built an entirely new one just for SUPERMAN. And again the result is very pleasing to the eye, capturing Reeve at when he was at about his very biggest and most muscular. It looks great. It has over 30 points of articulation and is very versatile when it comes to posing options. It also comes with swap-out hands, depending on which poses you want to put him into.

The costume is a decent representation of that seen in the first two films...many purists will say it is not screen accurate - and they may technically be correct - but I defy anyone, ANYONE, to look at this closely, even whilst the film is playing in front of them for comparison, and find any actual truly obvious fault. The cape is also pose-able as it has, within its seam, a thin wire which will allow it to hold a shape. This means that a 'wind swept, cape flapping' look is attainable with a bit of "Futzing" (as our American cousins have coined and like to say).

Yes, the diorama crystals do seem top want to slip out of the Fortress-style base, but that is really just because it is difficult to get them in quite far enough to begin with. This is where a little hair-dryer action is required :) Just use it to warm up the sockets are of the base, push them in firmly, and in they will go. And stay, this time. Also, the idea to make the actual box a part of the presentation is simple but brilliant.

In conclusion then, it is a really cool figure. There are two versions available, the Regular version and an Exclusive version. Both are identical in pose-ability and general content, except that the Exclusive's box also has a Kryptonite necklace (as seen in SM:II) included within it. It is a curious choice as an exclusive extra, the only way you could really use it is to show SUPERMAN at his very weakest and to me, well...that just defeats the object of the exercise.

As with any mass produced item, there are things which could have been done better...the boots could be a fraction taller up the calf, the cape could be a fraction fuller and have slightly more 'drop' down to the calf, the actual "S" shield symbol could have been represented on a thinner base material rather than the slightly spongy one that was used. But the truth is, none of these are anything like enough to detract from the just sheer fantastic qualities of this figure. Forget the insult to Christopher Reeve's memory that was the MATTEL version* This is the one that fans have been waiting for since 1979. I doubt very much if you would be disappointed if you bought it.

* This is, of course, a totally hypocritical statement to make by me. If this had not come along and the MATTEL version - vastly inferior though it is - was the only one out there, of course I would have one. I'd still snap one up in a second if I could find one at a half decent price, but they are still not shifting for less than £100, so I'll give it a bit longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Small Piece Of Hollywood In Your Home!, 24 April 2012
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
I seriously think that this is the best HOT TOY figure have ever made. It has everything going in its favour, with next to nothing/very little against it. From the look and design of the costume, the material used for the cape, the head sculpt (with interchangeable and different mouth areas) is superb. It looks like Michael Keaton in his BATMAN costume, but in a 1/6 scale.

The suit itself is a material that is not rubber as such, possibly some sort of PVC, and so will hopefully be free of the 'degrading' issue of the DX02 Dark Knight figures. This phenomenon was known as 'oil leaking' and was thought to be caused by badly cured rubber breaking back down into it constituent parts. Whatever it is, the detail of the sculpting here is also top-notch with the abdominals and the pectorals looking exactly like they do an any picture of Keaton actually in costume from 1989.

This figure is also a DX figure and so comes with the HOT TOYS patented P.E.R.S. eye-rolling system which allows one to position the eyes in a life-like way. With the blackening of the sculpt around the eyes matching that done to the actor on film, this seems to enhance the looks and make it seem extra real. Once again, the system can be a bit fragile, some reports on 1/6 collector's forums express how some have accidentally broken the PERS 'joystick' so use it carefully.

So, the down sides? Well, that's actually quite hard! The fins on the wrist gauntlets can be a bit fragile. Again there are reports on the forum sites of fins being broken off by accident, so care is needed. Also, the suit, due to its tightness and material used, limits the possible poses a fair bit and can be quite restrictive. Then there is HOT TOYS pricing strategy. These DX figures are the best in the world, and so are not cheap. Which fits in very nicely with my final point.

This is a beautiful figure. a true piece of cinema art. Just to be totally clear here, they are described as action-figures, even by HOT TOYS themselves, but they are not in any way to be considered as toys.

5.0 out of 5 stars HOT TOYS is the best company for 1/6 scale figures., 19 April 2012
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
Let's not make any mistakes, this is not a toy. It is an ultra high quality movie replica of Christian Bale in his BATMAN costume from DARK KNIGHT. It is reproduced with super accuracy. It has many features that make it unique, the head is designed so that the mouth area is a removable plate that is swappable, you can just place in a different mouth-plate to give a different expression. And all the three mouth sculpts are modelled according to Bale's face.

The head also utilises a system called P.E.R.S. or, the Hot Toys patented, Parallel Eye Rolling System. Any man my age will remember Action-Man's eagle-eye gadget that allows his eyes to move left-and-right. Imagine a serious version of that, with hand-painted glass eyes and the ability to position the eyes in any direction. It is eerily spooky how real that system can be.

BATMAN comes with a fantastic costume, a whole raft of interchangeable hands and some kick-butt gadgets to arm him, all reproduced from the film. And all of this is draped over a figure that has well over 30 points of articulation.

A brilliant figure, typical of HOT TOYS.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great 3D Experience., 12 Mar. 2012
One of the very best 3D releases I have ever seen. Not totally perfect (but then, what is?) but a lovely transfer - even in 2D - that just gains an extra something in the third dimension that elevates this wonderful and enjoyable family movie to a higher level.

DREAMWORKS is now a very real and credible contender for best Animation studio against PIXAR, especially considering the latter's slip-up with CARS II, the first truly mediocre film (?).

It really is going to come down to who has the better stories to tell, between them, and nothing more. In 'story satisfaction' terms this one is a real winner. Faith, overcoming self-doubt, pride, humility and family are all covered in this tale of a plump, noodle selling Panda called Po, whose father is a Crane, voiced by Asian legend James Hong, and who is now looking to hand on the family noodle business to his Fu dreaming son.

Into this is thrown the search for the Dragon Warrior, the don fall of engaging in presumption and pride.

An excellent film.
