5.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerising Tale, 5 Jan. 2015

This review is from: The Miniaturist (Kindle Edition)
Starts with a young girl's journey into a 18th century new world Amsterdam from the countryside. Her parents have married her to a successful trader, who buys her a miniature dolls house as a wedding gift. He travels frequently, and she moves into a house living with his sister, their young orphaned servant, and a black servant who he has bought back from his travels. Curious miniature items keep arriving for the house, seemingly foretelling their future. Without giving the story away too much, heart breaking rendition of how she grows.

5.0 out of 5 stars another great Perez story, 3 Sept. 2014

Very enjoyable. Twists and turns. Strong characters throughout. Cleves ability to describe characters and scenery makes this book unputdownable. If you like Jimmy Perez, this is a must read!

Captivating. Story of a Glasgow lad growing up. Filled me with anguish at times, pride and laughter at others. Loved the way he eulogised Maggie Thatcher - I suppose for lots of individuals she did create a lot of different opportunities. Great book!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars easy reading, 28 Feb. 2014

Very enjoyable, although sometimes got lost in the amount of characters. Some stories seem unfinished - Leah's, Tom & Alice's, and the family who lost their little boy - could have closed those off a little better? Didn't make you feel very strong about Wally & Hannah, although felt her pain when let down by

5.0 out of 5 stars very touching, 14 Feb. 2014

Lovely story. Liked the change in font style - somehow added to the way he told the storyline .can see why it won a prize. Eloquently written, captures your heart with Simon as the Down Syndrome child & how looking back it's the trigger that starts Matthew's illness. Without giving too much away, came full circle.

Bought this after reading the original article in the Telegraph in 2008 when i was diagnosed with a brain tumour at aged 38. The article was entitled "Can I be ill and happy?". The author has moved on (I subsequently emailed her & she responded! :-) I was pleased to read about her struggles, and then her positivity through the drug regime that was found. Inspiring!

Too simple - what a waste of money! Bought it because some of the money went to a cancer research project, but honestly, what a rip off!

5.0 out of 5 stars really enjoyed this..., 7 Sept. 2013

Have never read one of this author's novels before. However, found Catesby a really engaging character. He's a sort of "proper-James Bond" figure. What helps this story is the splashes of real history thrown in throughout.
