3.0 out of 5 stars Never Mind The Quality , Feel The Width., 28 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Irish Tour '74 (Audio CD)
This review is in respect to the multi-disc 40th anniversary set . I think the performances , musically , are terrific . In my opinion Rory Gallagher was the best ever blues / rock artist .
The reason I have marked it down is the sound quality on the majority of the discs , and the packaging . At least four of the CD's are patently sub-standard sound quality wise .
Why they just didn't get the best two or three along with the DVD and package it differently , I have no idea .
The packaging also is flimsy , and should have been done like Bob Dylan Biograph's initial release in a sturdy box with proper CD cases .
Overall rather disappointing as a package . Surely it could have been done better than this ?

4.0 out of 5 stars Good film - picture quality not great., 14 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I enjoyed the film very much , with a good combination of irony , social comment , and sadness .
One disappointing aspect was the quality of the picture .
The transfer to DVD wasn't the best , and even trying a multitude of fine tuning settings , both on the TV and the DVD player ( Marantz DV9600 over HDMI at 1080p ), didn't really solve things .
So 5/5 for the film itself , but probably only a 3/5 for the picture quality .

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice, 13 Oct. 2013
I have a few Mulgrew Miller CD's ( Live At Yoshi's Vol 1 + 11 , and both Live At Kennedy Center ones ) , and all are very consistent .
Obviously influenced by McCoy Tyner ( prior to his heavier phase of the early - mid 1970's ) , and stylistically similar to John Hicks , he also is very much like Hicks in the sense that he is old-fashioned , and I mean that in the best possible way .
Lovely tunes , flawlessly played and with good support from the other players , make this a nice listening experience .
It is also well recorded , and has a nice ambience to it .
Very highly recommended , with a very nice version of the Hoagy Carmichael classic , Skylark , being a particular stand out .
Rather sadly no longer with us , he passed away some months earlier , it is fortunate that this music gives us something of note to remember him by .

3.0 out of 5 stars No Relay , again !, 23 Jun. 2013
This review is from: The Ultimate Collection (Audio CD)
Decent compilation overall, but why not replace one of the weaker later tracks with the excellent Relay ? Hardly any of The Who compilations have it, but I hold it in high regard.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor packaging on re-mastered edition., 2 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Wings Over America (Audio CD)
Whilst the sound is some improvement on the previous edition(s) , it is still quite dynamically compressed , with a lack of air and depth to the sound stage .
My biggest grumble is with the packaging , however .
A cheap , crappy , cardboard case , with a stingy booklet .
Additionally , there is no track listing on the back cover.
The problem with these cardboard things , is the risk of surface damage to the discs themselves , both by the scraping of disc on the cardboard , and the inability to remove / insert them , without grasping the disc surface itself .
At least when the Japanese do this type of thing , they have a cloth sleeve for the discs , plus an additional paper sleeve around that .
So overall , some improvement sound-wise , but a retrograde step re packaging .

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Quite Enough, 14 April 2013
I have a fair number of Clark Terry CD's of various eras , and he certainly is a fine musician , as are the other musicians on this disc . However , I don't believe that the compositions overall are strong enough .
Having both a Mr Mumbles type track , and a singalong in Keep On Keeping On , probably is one too many .
There is the bonus of the excellent Chesky sound to compensate to a degree , but in my opinion the Portraits CD ( SACD particularly ) , is the one to buy from this era .

4.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Too Relaxed, 27 Feb. 2013
Whilst I can't fault the musicianship , it is just a bit too laid back for my taste .
I know that is how Ben Webster plays , but I was hoping that the influence of Oscar Peterson might liven things up a touch more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, 28 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Janus (Audio CD)
I was unsure at first , despite the outstanding pedigree of all the musicians , how the melding of a string quartet with two outstanding jazz soloists would work .
I works alright ! This is an exceptional CD , covering all gamuts of musical styles , and always sounding "right" .
I wish I could give it more than five stars , as this is one of those extremely rare "perfect" works , that just couldn't be improved upon .
And as another reviewer states , it is also another indication of how great a pianist Gordon Beck is .
For anyone who likes quality music , irrespective of genre , this is a must have .

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional performance and sound, 28 Jan. 2013
I give a great big thank you to all involved for getting this released ! What a performance ; everyone is on fire , and the sound is terrific .
I have a variety of Art Pepper's recordings over the years , and they are all universally good . This is another one in that class .
And I now see that the 4CD set from 1980 , ( Blues For The Fisherman ) is available .
Needless to say , after writing this review , I have added that to my wish list , ready to buy next pay day !
Anyone who likes great music ( and I am not going to pigeon-hole it , as Louis Armstrong said - there are only two types of music , good and bad ), has to listen to this .

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Sounds Fresh, 24 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Electric Glide (Audio CD)
This was first heard by myself upon release in the 1970's , and I thought it was terrific .
It still is ! Unlike some artists ( Mahavishnu Orchestra , Weather Report , Return To Forever ) whose work , in my opinion , has dated quite badly , this is still fresh , lively and full of interest even after repeated plays .
It was issued on CD many moons ago by Naim , and they did a good job , but the sound on this is better still , allowing all of the nuances to be heard even more clearly .
Highly recommended , as is The Dancer also.
