5.0 out of 5 stars newfoundland's finest find their sea legs!, 19 Sept. 2007
This review is from: Sea of No Cares (Audio CD)
This is the album which helped Canadian four piece GreaBig Sea gain a foothold in the USA.Released in 2002 this was their debut for American roots label Zoe/Rouder.What a great album,it contains several originals plus what has become GBS's 'bread and butter',their unique interpretation of songs and tunes from the Newfoundland folk tradition. The title track was co-written with Chris Tipper from US band The Pushstarts about a guy who visits a remote city(St John's ?) and loses all his inhibitions and goes'native' and allows himself to be seduced in this unique place. The trad. arr songs and dance tunes are the highpoints of the album.Gideon Brown,Yarmouth Town and The Fortune Set show off the band's versatility.Once again Messrs Doyle,McCann, Power and Hallett have delivered the goods.Stand out tracks The Scolding wife,Sea of no cares,Penelope, actually they all stand out!

5.0 out of 5 stars great big sea's impromptu kitchen party in mainland Canada., 17 Sept. 2007
Great Big Sea,those fun loving pop-folk funsters, performed a memorable concert in Ottawa in 2002.This formed part of a documentary shown on Canadian T.V which showed the band being interviewed in and around St.Johns Newfoundland along with archive footage,as well as 14 videos and just for good measure the audio cd is included,a bargain!GBS hit the ground running as soon as they take the stage.A stirring version of the trad.sea shanty Donkey Riding ,and their biggest hit single(Canada only) a cover of Oysterbands When I'm Up soon have the audience making one hell of a noise!Even the false start on Jack Hicks has the audience in raptures. As ever,Alan Doyle is at the forefront, thoughSean McCann delivers stirring versions ofMariMac and I'm a Rover.BobHallett is the bands vituoso excelling on accordian, whistles and cittern. While soon to depart DarrellPower keeps the bass rhythm going.Other outstanding songs LukeysBoat,Sea of no Cares.A five star cracker!

5.0 out of 5 stars classic singer songwriters get their break through RUSH, 17 Sept. 2007
Not the 3 piece prog rock outfit but Boston based folk bluesman TOM RUSH.His classic album from 1967 has been given a welcome re-release.Rush made his name playing just about every coffee house, folk club and blues venues ,mainly on the East coast. The Circle Game was Tom's third album for Elektra, which had a more laid back approach ,for the first time Tom was backed by a string section, but his fine guitar playing still shone through. This album showcased some of the singer-song writers who would eventually go on and become legends most notably James Taylor,Joni Mitchell,Jackson Browne whose material Rush would cover on other recordings.Standout tracks, the circle game ,an early Joni classic,Brownes obscure Shadow dream song and Rush's own No regrets, later to become chart hits for The Walker Bros.and MidgeUre!

4.0 out of 5 stars enough winners to grace any trophy cabinet, 16 Sept. 2007
weddings parties anything were one of the great live acts to come out of australia in the 80's and 90's.lead by brilliant songwriter mick thomas, the 'weddoes' recorded several outstanding albums during that period.thomas had a good eye for a tune. And his lyrics were such, that no less a talent then bono continually sang his praises. He,thomas is a great storyteller and he always makes his characters come to life.Songs like Industrial Town,Away away the scorn of the women and fathers day are all anthemic songs with biting social comment,Mondays experts is a humourous song that takes a swipe at those who think they know all about aussie rules or any sport by glancing at the back page.this collection is stirring stuff.Aussie urban folk.NOT exactly TheSeekers just 10 times better.

4.0 out of 5 stars home thoughts and some from scottish 'ex pat', 16 Sept. 2007
This review is from: Dance of the underclass (Audio CD)
Politically motivated Alistair Hulett lived in Australia for over 20 years after he and his family left Scotland just before a certain M.Thatcher came to prominence.Immediately,Alistair got involved in politics and soon he became part of the Aussie punk scene ,getting involved with local issues, eventually forming punk-folk 5 piece Roaring Jack, made 3 albums.Dance of the underclass released in 1991 was Alistair's debut. The Jacks appear on several tracks most notably The Swaggies have all watzed Matilda away, the best song EricBogle never wrote.Proddy dogs And papes recalls the religous divide exclusive to Glasgow and no where else.Several other songs show how Aly has absorbed the influences of the likes of ewan macoll, billy bragg, dick gaughan listen to his version of The Internationale afitting finale to a fine set, excellent production and musicianship throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars great big sea bring Newfoundland to Ottawa and win!, 16 Sept. 2007
This review is from: Great Big Sea.. . (Audio CD)
St.John's most famous ambassadors since cod give their mainland cousins a night with this superb Cd/Dvd .Great Big Sea have released live albums in recent years, but this stands out as a superb set.It does not disappoint.Recorded in Ottawa in October 2006,GBS perform The Hard and the Easy tour in front of an intimite audience who are soon on their feet making the kind of noise usually asociated with stadium bands.Lead singer Alan Doyle starts procedings with captain kidd,a song the Pogues would have been proud to perform.Doyle and fellow vocalist and genial bodran player are a superb double act swapping one liners, but their musicianship is excellent, though Bob Hallet nearly outshines them on Helmethead. The Dvd only cover of Slade's Runaway has to be seen to be believed!Newfoundland could never have more more finer ambassadors.

4.0 out of 5 stars spirits fly high on high energy folk., 16 Sept. 2007
This review is from: Save This House (Audio CD)
vancouvers finest roots band, actually they often said that it was folk and roll!spirit of the west were probably canadas answer to the POGUES and listening to this its easy to see why.SOTW began playing the alternative scene in Vancouver in the mid eighties and earned rave reviews for their high energy performances .Save this house was their fourth release (1990)and the songs and trad. tunes came closest to recapturing their live shows.john manns banshee like vocals and scots born Geoff Kelly's superb flute and whistle playing stand out on the albums best track Home For a Rest, about life on the road or rather rails in the uk.Water in the well and The old sod show the bands humourous side with a serious message.Sit still to this if you dare!

4.0 out of 5 stars the divine ms. pidgeon is proof that actors CAN sing, 16 Sept. 2007
This review is from: Retrospective (Audio CD)
american born but educated in scotland,Rebecca Pidgeon first came to prominence as a talented film and stage performer.Rebecca got her first break in music when she joined the indie folk pop band Ruby Blue. But since leaving
the uk Rebecca has embarked on a busy career in films, while also finding time to produce several fine albums, and this excellent compilation backs this up. This is an album of contrasting styles, consisting of jazz, coffee house folk(?) and even a tribute to her Scottish roots.Stand out tracks Primitive Man and the traditional Texas Rangers.A fine collection.
