3.0 out of 5 stars Good mystery, 10 Feb 2014

An enjoyable little read. I was initially quite disappointed because the solution is such a blatant steal from an Agatha Christie novel. Thinking about it though, this isn't an author who generally has a problem thinking up plots so I'm guessing that it's a deliberate homage, considering the setting is a mystery writer's convention. It would have been nice to have had that mentioned in the story though.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good series, 10 Feb 2014

I thoroughly enjoyed the original series, although it did seem that there were too many lead characters, all tripping over themselves to do the same job. They've obviously taken that into account and written out one boffin and brought in an engineer. The ensemble works much better for it. The plots are well-written and more conventional than the one in the first series, which works very well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful hard SF, 10 Feb 2014

A masterpiece of a novel with some excellent hard science (as you would expect from two luminaries in the field) and far-reaching concepts. I would rate it five stars, but the Kindle version has obviously been scanned in and not proof-read so there are A LOT of typos.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good to while away half an hour, 10 Feb 2014

A nice little self-contained mystery. It's not terribly complicated, but a short story can't really be. It's well-written with a clear set of clues, believable suspects and a logical denoument.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, 10 Feb 2014

Taken from the blog of the same name (which I've loved for years), this is laugh-out-loud funny as she describes the disaster she can find in the most simple situations. There's also a darker side as she describes some of the things in life she's had to deal with, but all done in the same wonderful style.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best SF series ever made, 10 Feb 2014

I absolutely love this show. I remember it when it was first on the telly as being creepy and mysterious and it doesn't disappoint watching it now. It's not as fast-paced as modern shows and relies on the actors rather than special effects, but that all adds to its charm. A true classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful, 10 Feb 2014

I missed the show when it was first shown so I'm just catching up now. It has a real Tim Burton feel about it- some very dark humour in a brightly coloured package. Very, very enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun, 10 Feb 2014

A great book just to kick back and relax with. The characters are fun, well-written and believable (occasionally slightly larger-than-life, but that's largely the point). A nice little mystery that rattles along well. Perfect holiday reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful space opera/mystery, 10 Feb 2014

This is the third book I've read in the Alex Benedict series and I'm growing to love them. McDevitt has a very easy writing style, engaging characters and interesting plots. The space-archaeologist concept works very well and gives the setting a real sense of history. His settings really come alive while he's describing them.

The books ok, but that's about it. The characters all blend into one after a while, making it a bit confusing to work out who's talking to who. Strange for a modern book, but there's not a single female character among the lead characters. Worth a read if you like the Mythos and you're stuck for something, but there's much better out there.
