4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job well., 10 Feb 2014

Good quality, sturdy, good value for money with a nice degree of spring in the handle. The point is a little too sharp, but that's a very minor quibble as it's easy enough to blunt.

Like the others in the series, this is a good mystery with well-written characters and a plot that rattles along and never gives you time to get bored. Perfect holiday reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun, 10 Feb 2014

An entertaining little book that does exactly what it says on the tin. The writing style's not the greatest, but it's perfectly readable. A good editor would have got this to a 4 star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining space opera., 10 Feb 2014

The first in the Alex Benedict series does a great job of introducing the character and gives a well-written space opera/mystery. The space-archaeology setting really fleshes out the setting and you get a real sense of history. Very enjoyable.

This review is from: Heartbreak Hotel (Kindle Edition)
It's a nice little book that plods along in an inoffensive way. It's nowhere near as good as "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", largely because (a) the setting isn't anywhere near as interesting and (b) there are a very large number of characters who only appear for a bit, then disappear again, leaving it feeling a bit disjointed. All in all, a nice little read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good mystery, 10 Feb 2014

An enjoyable little read. I was initially quite disappointed because the solution is such a blatant steal from an Agatha Christie novel. Thinking about it though, this isn't an author who generally has a problem thinking up plots so I'm guessing that it's a deliberate homage, considering the setting is a mystery writer's convention. It would have been nice to have had that mentioned in the story though.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good series, 10 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I thoroughly enjoyed the original series, although it did seem that there were too many lead characters, all tripping over themselves to do the same job. They've obviously taken that into account and written out one boffin and brought in an engineer. The ensemble works much better for it. The plots are well-written and more conventional than the one in the first series, which works very well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful hard SF, 10 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A masterpiece of a novel with some excellent hard science (as you would expect from two luminaries in the field) and far-reaching concepts. I would rate it five stars, but the Kindle version has obviously been scanned in and not proof-read so there are A LOT of typos.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good to while away half an hour, 10 Feb 2014

A nice little self-contained mystery. It's not terribly complicated, but a short story can't really be. It's well-written with a clear set of clues, believable suspects and a logical denoument.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, 10 Feb 2014

Taken from the blog of the same name (which I've loved for years), this is laugh-out-loud funny as she describes the disaster she can find in the most simple situations. There's also a darker side as she describes some of the things in life she's had to deal with, but all done in the same wonderful style.
