Murder in Adland (Detective Inspector Skelgill Investigates Book 1)
Price: £1.98

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read great characterisations, 5 Aug 2014
Unfortunately I read these out of order and this the first book in the series I read after the second book. I enjoyed both mainly because I like the characterisations and also the observations on the countryside the author gives the reader. I would call them gentle crime investigations no unnecessary violence and will look forward to the next one due out later in the year.

Although written way back in 1919 this murder investigation is still very interesting and shows how very differently the police and press related to each other. An enjoyable old fashioned read.

Walking the Retreat: The March to the Marne: 1914 Revisited
Walking the Retreat: The March to the Marne: 1914 Revisited
by Terry Cudbird
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.37

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent, interesting and enlightening read, 23 July 2014
An excellent, interesting and enlightening read a must for anyone with an interest in the early days of the Great War. Who would have thought, during a walk through Northern France, that the discovery, by the author, of a monument to commemorate the Battle of the Marne, September 1914 would lead him to explore this period fully and then produce this extremely well researched book.
‘Walking The Retreat’ is based around the diary of French Lieutenant André Benoit on the March to the Marne but also included are notable quotes from numerous sources, (French, British and German) along with military details a reader needs to obtain the full picture, not only of the military operation, the terrible destruction and enormous loss of life but also the suffering that tested the soldiers to the limit of their endurance
Terry Cudbird, the author, faithfully follows the route taken by André comparing the landscape and conditions of then to how it is today and in so doing creates an immensely well informed, readable book.

3.0 out of 5 stars I love the characters, I love the plots - but too often repeats salient points., 12 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love the characters, I love the plots and this time the author cleverly embroiders some of the other detectives however this time I found myself bored at times as salient points are too often reiterated. This unfortunately spoilt the read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strike and Robin, a private detective and sidekick duo that resonate with the reader, 29 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Strike and Robin, a private detective and sidekick duo that resonate with the reader. These two character's created by the author are both realistic and appealing. The myriad of side players with unforgettable foibles bring the whole story to life, A very enjoyable read even if at times the imagination, names and contents (in the book within the book) conjured up by the author are, shall we say, a little magical.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Novella - Sasha and Leo's wedding and an over the top plot, 29 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A novella written especially to provide details of Sasha and Leo's wedding however the plot was completely over the top. I've now read all of the Sasha McCandless books and unfortunately non come up to the quality of the author's first two books in this series.
