5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Live Collection!, 3 Aug. 2015
This is a great collection of live recordings of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Mariss Jansons. There are some wonderful surprises here and it's good to see a release (and an orchestra) that mixes up some traditional classical standards with a range of more modern works. The sound quality is excellent and the dynamics of these live performances are far more rewarding than a studio recording. There's a lot of great music to explore here. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars 8 TB drive space, yet smaller than a paperback book!, 5 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A nice quiet drive with loads of capacity that sits unobtrusively on your desk and works well. This has a nice matt silver finish and is slightly smaller than a 500-page paperback book. It can be partitioned into a number of storage areas and is good value for money. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 23 Jun. 2015
Florence + The Machine have grown steadily in stature and this is the album that will surely provide the group with international stardom. It's simply a belting record with a fantastic set of songs, flawlessly performed and produced. Fresh, fascinating, fantastic, flawless. Highly, highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Echoes Of What Has Gone Before?, 22 Jun. 2015
This review is from: Drones (Audio CD)
This is another classy album from Muse, but there are echoes of what has gone before, so I'm wondering if these guys are starting to run out of ideas. There are good, chunky rhythms and even shades of Queen (e.g. 'Defector'), but there is also a deal of padding (drill sergeants and JFK!). But the good stuff is certainly worth the price of admission ('Psycho', 'Mercy' and 'The Globalist'). Muse fans will love this album and the best songs will be great live, but Muse will need to innovate rather than repeat to stay on top. Having said all that, I find that I'm playing this album loads of times and enjoying it immensely!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant!, 10 Jun. 2015
This review is from: Goodnight Mister Tom (Hardcover)
This is a marvellous book about a young boy evacuated from Deptford to the countryside during WW2. He is billeted with a taciturn old man who helps transform the boy from a sickly, worried child into a happy, talented lad. This tale has depth and is an emotional roller coaster and it's one of the strongest, most memorable children's books I've ever read. This hardback edition is perfect - highly recommended.

Charlie Chaplin
Charlie Chaplin
by Peter Ackroyd
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars The Life of 'The Little Fellow'!, 27 May 2015
This review is from: Charlie Chaplin (Paperback)
This is a delightful and informative book about the life of Charlie Chaplin. Ackroyd writes sparingly, so this is a small book that covers a vast subject. But the descriptions of Charlie's early life of poverty in London and his early days in cinema at the Keystone studio in California are evocative. Chaplin's comedy mixed with pathos and violence had universal appeal. He was the first truly iconic actor to be instantly recognised across the world. His silent films needed no dialogue and so could be enjoyed by anyone, anywhere. His films were the first glimpse many immigrants to the USA had of American life. This book captures all of this and is an important addition to our understanding of Chaplin and his genius. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Magical Book!, 26 May 2015
This is a very nice edition of what is a truly magical book. A sturdy hardback with good print size, this would make an excellent gift for a child of any age, particularly at Christmas. This has history, magic, adventure and is extremely well written. The sort of book that will be read and reread for many years. Recommended.

Excellent DVD set. This has a great cast and features an irresistible take on Henry VIII's court as seen through the eyes of his 'fixer' Thomas Cromwell. This is great TV and a riveting interpretation of the excellent book. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm not as thunk as people drink I am!, 10 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This little book will suit both the beginner and the expert in the wonderful world of whisky. This nice-sized volume is well laid out, with good descriptions of the products, pictures of the bottles, a price guide, and even space to record your verdicts as you work your way through the whiskies. There is also helpful information about the producers, distilleries and whether they have a visitors' centre. I like the fact that the featured whiskies are all available commercially, thus avoiding disappointment for the reader as they go forth to try them out. This book is a nice little browser, as well as a helpfully informative guide. Whether you like single malts, or are just thinking about where to start in exploring Japanese whiskies, then this is for you. This would make a perfect gift, or a welcome addition to any library. Keep it near the drinks cabinet as it saves all the walking as you settle down to try another taste or two of the 'water of life'. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pioneering Stuff!, 3 April 2015
This review is from: Wolflight (Audio CD)
A welcome return by Steve Hackett and this extraordinary album does not disappoint. It's rather orchestral and heavy in parts, but in a good and tasteful way. The lengthier songs are the most interesting as Hackett has time to explore and spread, including delivering quality solos. There are also some lovely acoustic touches. Fans will love this and it should be spectacular to hear this material live. Possibly prog album of the year? Well, perhaps too early to say, but I would be surprised if it is not in contention - it's that good. It does one's heart good to know there is still vision, imagination and quality out there in Progland - long may it continue. Recommended.
