The Tiger Roars!, 9 Jan 2011
John Vaillant has written a book about a tiger that, for a few days, terrorizes an area in the remote part of Russia called Primorye. This premise could have led him to write a detective style novel, or even an adventurous one. I am not sure with quite what he has come up, but it was one of the best reads ever. The book seeks to find out not just what is behind the confrontation between men and tiger in this part of the world, but he also investigates, and describes beautifully, the people who live here, and why they live here. This involves a lot more then just background information on the participants in this "battle", but goes as far as the history of the Soviet Union, the native people of the region the close by Chinese; the superstitions and believes of the locals; the legends of the area... And then there is the tiger. This already majestic creature is drawn in such powerful terms, that James Cameron could not paint a more vivid picture of its history and intentions. Everything comes together in the final confrontation, and despite the lack of hope and pleasure in this part of the world - it makes you want to go there and see for yourself.
