4.0 out of 5 stars A Surprising and Encouraging Read, 14 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having encountered a couple of scenarios described in this book first hand, I consider its accounts to be authentic. The scale on which its description of activity takes place is incredible and surprising.

I found some of the theological points made slightly ponderous and repetitive, on a couple of occasions overly literal and dismissive of academic study. However the powerful impact of facilitating engagement with the bible and the Holy Spirit, courageous faith, disciple making, releasing rather than controlling is incredibly insightful.

Discovery of the truths of Christian living through obedient action rather than force feeding well developed and presented theories is clearly much more dynamic and effective than many other ways of advancing the Kingdom of God. The rapid replication of discipleship and the speed of the generational cycles absolutely astounded me.

An entire book of war stories, lifting the lid on what is happening in the badlands of Islamist Africa shines a light where armies fear to march. That alone is worth the read.

If you want a break from engaging but lightweight Christian living pap, then read this and be encouraged.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wisdom from someone who understands, 24 Dec. 2012

Desmond Tutu is a small fellow with a huge sgtreak of morality. He reminds me in a way of a real life hobbit! His deliberate attempt to set out facts from first hand accounts, to make sense of some of them, and to allow the reader to do the same provides a unique set of insights into human experience.

Big questions arise from reading this. Who suffers more, the tortured or the torturer? How does a maimed society move on? How can the children grow up to a better world? What must not be lost when the hardest lessons have been learned?

In grappling with the financial costs, the moral morass, the searing pain of a national societal disaster Tutu offers us all the chance to learn from the failings and the recoveries made under extreme commuity stress.

Personal Religion, Public Reality?: Towards a Knowledge of Faith
Personal Religion, Public Reality?: Towards a Knowledge of Faith
by Dallas Willard
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem, 10 Dec. 2012

I picked this book up following a biog of the author in a magazine. For once we have someone who quite naturally brings the depth of his insight across his philosophical and religious thinking.

There is a seamlessness to how he explains why the major religions cannot be five fingers of one hand, and that proper scrutiny of religion is necessary in order to make sense of the interaction between people of differing, and indeed irreconcilable positions.

He adequately addresses the paucity of thought now emanating from many academic institutions, and rightly asserts that until and unless the matter of religions is academically embraced, we will have no moral or ethical basis for our key decisions, except for a fatally flawed secularism, which treats all religious persuasions except its own as equally intellectually assinine.

A wonderfully incisive book which astute thinkers will be referencing well after Willard has left us.

I found the book well constructed, full of excellent insights and extremely useful for framing my thoughts on the subject of Jesus. Christology is a really tough subject often poorly taught. This book is an accessible well written introduction to the important concepts with which one must grapple in order to gain an understanding of the most important figure in history.
