4.0 out of 5 stars The Parthian, 18 Oct. 2012

Peter Darman has stepped into the Roman world of Spartacus and his slave army. This book is well researched and paints a compelling picture of the fight against a roman army which in theory should have triumphed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wouldbe templar, 17 April 2012

Although it is difficult to appreciate the policies and mode of living as a templar, the Brethren Trilogy makes it easier to understand what is was like to "take up the cross". Will Campbell becomes very real but you share his frustration in not beconmming a Templar quickly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bernard Cornwell's usual standard, 24 Aug. 2009

This seems to be a different type of narative. The four books in the series, Alfred the Great, are written in the first person singular as though the main character is telling the story of his life in the 9th century. It took a while to get used to this style but it certainly "grows on you". Bernard Cornwell has the knack of letting you live the time.

This review is from: Claudius (Hardcover)
Following Douglas Jackson's "Caligula", "Claudius" is a masterpiece of well researched, historically accurate and compelling story telling. Anybody who has an interest in either Roman history or early Britain will appreciate the insight into a time clouded in mystery. Not only a very good read but informative too.

This book lets you see, feel and even smell ancient Rome. You feel the pain in battle; the brutality and slaughter is so real that you could almost be there. I can only congratulate Ben Kane for his insight and understanding of the horror of the time. I can't wait to read The Silver Eagle, volume two of the chronicles.

5.0 out of 5 stars RHS Encyclopedia, 5 Jun. 2009

This is the definitive book on gardening technique and there is little need to refer to any other. Although now quite old it remains up to date and should be on every gardener's bookshelf.
