Made in the Trenches: Composed entirely from articles & sketches contributed by soldiers
by Sir Frederick Treves
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB BOOK, 31 Dec. 2011

This is, arguably, one of the the most interesting books from the Great War era. It gives the reader a real insight into the thoughts of men fighting abroad for their country. It reveals the humour shared by soldiers 'at the front' and I feel privileged to own it.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but...., 21 Nov. 2011

This review is from: Trench Art (Paperback)
Having already got the original 'Shire' edition I thought that this would be a 'must'. Bit disappointed though as, although bigger, thicker and more expensive, all the illustrations are now in black and white and not, as they were in the original version, full colour with much better definition of the images. Text however is very good and expands on that in the original version.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN IMPORTANT, BUT FORGOTTEN, 'GREAT WAR' BOOK, 28 Oct. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although the Great War has been a fascination for me for many years I had never heard of this book until about a fortnight ago. I'd purchased 'Forgotten Victory', by Gary Sheffield and it made reference to it. Written in 1911, three years before the conflict began, it really helps you understand the mentality of the leaders of the German Empire at that time (Not that I'm advocating it in any way!). To be able to download it to my Kindle,'Free, Gratis and for Nothing' is amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK, 28 Oct. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Gary Sheffield's book casts a whole new light on World War One. For years we've had to put up with 60s and 70s view of 'Lions led by Donkeys' (actually a quote about the French Army by a German general during the Franco-Prussian War). What many people have overlooked is that, although a very costly and bloody war, most of the men involved did NOT think they had been wasting their time. If you have time look at the cartoons of Louis Raemaekers you'll get an idea of what the general opinion of many countries was of the Germans, and their activities, at that time. You will probably also understand more clearly why so many men volunteered to join the British Army.

This review is from: Raemaekers' Cartoons (Hardcover)
Good book but the modern printing leaves a fair bit to be desired. Images very small and not too clever. Mind you, still a nice book to own.

5.0 out of 5 stars PROBABLY THE BEST BOOK ON WW1 I'VE EVER READ, 6 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I first became interested in the 'Great War', when I was thirteen, in 1964 (the 50th anniversary) and have read literally dozens of books, and watched countless TV programmes, on this subject. I bought a copy of this about a month ago and was totally mesmerised. If you ever wondered what it must have been REALLY like to be an ordinary soldier fighting on the Western Front then this is THE book to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK, 18 May 2011

Although quite detailed for an old mind like mine, I found this to be REALLY helpful on a subject I knew very little about.
