Jimmy
Jimmy
by Jane Renouf
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Profoundly Moving, 20 Jun 2011
This review is from: Jimmy (Paperback)
This book is un-put-down-able and unbearable in equal portions. Jane Renouf is a particularly articulate writer and I felt an enormous respect for her bravery and compassion. Her account of the effect of her son's slow death and their last conversations is heartbreakingly honest and I thought of little else for days afterwards. I was amazed to find that the family lived just round the corner from where I worked at the time (and still work) in the Lake District and that Jimmy is buried in the local churchyard. I just wish I could have found some freesias for him...

4.0 out of 5 stars Evocative Styling, Low Maintenance..., 10 July 2010
I love retro styling... I also love my radios and have one in every room of the house (even the bathroom). My old Roberts was way past its best and falling apart so I was looking for something a little different, compact, high quality and raffishly handsome. I checked out the Top Ten of DAB radios on Google and guess what came top, and at a good deal cheaper than my previous preferred choice of a Roberts Revival? The Pure Evoke Mio. I knew Pure were excellent quality radios as my friend has one in London and I can never resist it when I stay with her, but I had reservations about the contemporary styling, so this edition ticked all the right boxes. My only concern is that the suede effect band around the casing will not age well, nor be easy to clean. However, the bright red leatherette, brushed metal and simple controls make for a very desirable set indeed and it is small enough to suit the most bijou of properties. The build quality is impressive and the scrolling display is very useful: this is zeitgeist retro radio at its best. Shame about the British choice of DAB for digital radio... it's not perfect by any means and even on this set it does suffer somewhat depending on where the radio is placed. However, the green credentials make for cheap listening on a very high-end product - who could want for anything more? Just don't forget that the rechargeable battery only lasts for 24 hours before it needs plugging back into the mains!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Ambitious Enough..., 28 Jan 2009
This review is from: Ambition (Audio CD)
I owned this album in the late 1980s and enjoyed it for a while, but I've never been much of a fan of soft rock. If you like a bit of AOR then you may find this a half-decent album but the only AOR band I can listen to now is FM, and they didn't get very far either. There are a few catchy tunes on here and Shaw's vocals are adequate but he does strain a little at the higher reaches and some of the songs are just fillers. Basically I bought it on the strength of the cover, which usually always works, strangely enough, but this is the one album that disappointed in that respect. Song subjects are typical, instrumentation is unremarkable - maybe Shaw has improved since then? After all, Simon Warner proves that just because you're not in the Top 40 doesn't mean you're not fantastic...

Cast Away (2 Disc Set) [DVD] [2001]
Cast Away (2 Disc Set) [DVD] [2001]
Dvd ~ Tom Hanks

4.0 out of 5 stars A Lesson In Directing, 19 April 2008
This film could have been dire... the acting could have been lousy; the sets could have been unrealistic; the score could have been overly-sentimental but - worst of all - the direction could have been 'Hollywood'. No... Tom Hanks pulls off a masterful performance, the sets were uncomfortably real; the score was understated and the direction... the direction was a treat. A thought-provoking film that takes the viewer on a journey of 'what if's. An almost biblical atmosphere unfolds as Hanks realises he's completely alone, and the director handles the psychological effects of the ordeal with particular skill and sensitivity. It's not easy carrying the majority of a film single handedly but Hanks is, as always, engaging to the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars An important message in a funny story, 4 Nov 2007
This is a top book for little ones about the importance of looking on the bright side and not getting hung up about setbacks. The combination of ironic text and amusing illustrations makes for an amusing read for all ages. Toddlers will identify with the frustration mouse feels when things appear to be going wrong for him, and will also feel the relief that he was actually very lucky!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Story of Parental Love, 28 Oct 2007
This review is from: No Matter What (Paperback)
This book pairs excellent illustrations with concise rhyming text to produce a beautiful, reassuring story particularly suited to bedtime. Children recognise how frustrating it can be when parents are too busy to pay attention, realising by the end of the story that no matter what you look like or how naughty you can be, parental love is unconditional. My two pre-schoolers find this book very entertaining and it is a frequent request at all times of the day. Luckily, it is also entertaining for the adult reader!

Yes I Know My Way
Yes I Know My Way

4.0 out of 5 stars Intrigued..., 15 Jun 2007
This review is from: Yes I Know My Way (Audio CD)
I'll admit I'm totally new to Italian music and this is one of the first albums I've discovered on the CD player in the restaurant where I work... I'm smitten. I don't know why, as I'm a rocker at heart, but there's something compelling about this album in particular. I've no idea what he's singing about, I just know the songs are fantastic. I now find I'm learning Italian... mark my words, this genre will be the musical discovery of the 21st Century.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Much Advice, Just Stark Facts, 12 May 2006
I bought this book thinking it would be a really useful tool for ensuring my children are not bullied when they start school... how wrong I was! It is a very dark book, consisting almost entirely of stories of children who were bullied and committed suicide: a very sad, bleak investigation into a depressing subject. I'm afraid to say I read it and re-sold it.

4.0 out of 5 stars See, The Trouble With Me..., 1 May 2006
This review is from: All-Time Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Like the previous reviewer I, too, grew to be a Barry White fan from enjoying the wonderful Ally McBeal - although I had heard his songs many times before but didn't get to truly engage with them until they were showcased on said programme (am I a marketeer's dream?).

Nope, I'm not a sad old romantic (far from it), proving that there is more to Barry White than a sex soundtrack. These are well-written songs that just scream to be sung and danced to. You may not recognise the titles straight away, but you're bound to recognise the songs, they're all classics. This particular compilation should whet your appetite for a more thorough exploration of Mr White's discography. Laid back, catchy and, yes, like John Cage on Ally McBeal, THEY MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD! Is that a decent enough reason to buy this Barry White compilation? I think so...

4.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric Psychological Thriller, 7 April 2006
This film hardly needs any introduction - the plotline is amply outlined by previous reviewers: it is, indeed, a thoroughly enjoyable thriller... well paced, beautifully acted, atmospheric and expertly directed - although the ending is typically long-drawn-out and bloody. There really is no need for explicit gore in a psychological thriller such as this, but perhaps that's what modern audiences expect. I'd have given this a four and a half if it were possible, it's certainly worth seeing a couple of times.
