What a great piece of nostalgia! I am old enough to remember the sensation this created on 1960's TV. Viewed from our time, there are of course strange video and performance problems (fluffed lines, hesitancies, shaky scenery, etc.) but these are readily forgiven - the stories hold up very well, although attempts at humour are not always successful by our modern standards. Outside shots (on telecine) show their age, as quick movement is not realised too well - but the music! What a treat to hear the original Boosey and Hawkes 78's (conducted by Nat Nyll (a pseudonym I believe for Dolf van der Linden), not just as the theme tune, but also incidental music during the aforementioned outside shots. In fact in some episodes we hear nearly all of Trevor Duncan's "Little Suite" Now, where can I find the 78's, because modern performances simply miss the charm of the original (as can also be said of the brave attempt to make a later series with a different cast). Please, Simply Media, can we have some more?

The John Rutter Christmas Album

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for Christmas..., 8 Jan. 2014

In fact, this would be an excellent disc for any time of year, as it invokes one very special season so vividly. The performances are all one could wish for (as a retired choir member I can well remember the groans when a new piece by John Rutter was announced; his music is not easy to sing, despite being so melodic (oh those key changes!)) The music may be too sweet for ears used to rougher sounds, but it is so well made (in the symphonic world, the symphonies of George Lloyd spring to mind) - composed in a musical world full of cacophony this is music which the Victorians would have enjoyed, although the harmonies would have raised an eyebrow or two in that earlier age. The production is excellent, and, as an introduction to the music of John Rutter, this is an excellent disc.

This is my first experience of writing Blu-Ray discs - they work well on my Panasonic recorder - writing discs on the PC is more difficult, but I am learning.

This is a fine example of how to produce a good romantic story - excellent acting, scenery and photography, and compelling story lines. There is no more to say, really.

This makes for grim but fascinating viewing. I am very glad not to be living in Dublin in those days!

3.0 out of 5 stars Full marks for effort, 13 Aug. 2013

This is not as good as I had hoped it would be - in fact the opening part with these dreadful children just went on so long that I completely lost interest. Perhaps I shall return to it and try again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent production, 13 Aug. 2013

This is well up to the standard of the Rosamunde Pilcher box set - glossy production, and great story - you just know it will all work out in the end, but how you get there is what keeps you watching. We did of course meet Pandora in "September" and this is a kind of sequel to that story. Strange that nowhere on the case notes or on the disc extras is there any reference to this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia in waltz time, 13 Feb. 2012
This review is from: The Great Waltz [DVD] [1938] (DVD)
My wife remembered seeing this film many years ago (prompted by that TV ad featuring a metallic humming-bird with John Charles Thomas singing one of the themes from "The great Waltz", albeit with different words). The DVD is Portuguese, but it is easy to turn off the foreign subtitles and enjoy the original English film. The musical score is taken from music by Johann Strauss II arranged by a young Dmitri Tiomkin with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, long before he teamed up with Rodgers. The acting is wooden (especially Miliza Korjus) but much of the singing and orchestral playing is impressive. There is one scene of Strauss conducting an orchestra of ladies wearing ball gowns, which must have influenced André Rieu! Another moment occurs where trick photography is used to fill the screen with superimposed pictures of orchestral players, very much foreshadowing Walt Disney's same trick in "Fantasia". This is most definitely not the biography of Johann Strauss (and indeed the opening title sequence tells us so) but if you are not a purist, and enjoy a sentimental tale with memorable music, then this film is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A really useful thing, 19 July 2011
We have a small bathroom with limited storage space. Wall fixings are not possible (old crumbling wall plaster) and this just fits the bill exactly. The enclosed instructions could be better (some of the illustrations are, to say the least, ambiguous) and although not mentioned, it would be easier to assemble it with two people. Once put together it was still very unstable, due mainly to its long legs, but I was able to secure it to the wall (not using the cumbersome fixing devices included in the packaging). The door knobs and drawer knobs are very difficult to secure without breaking them. A tube of glue was included, but no instructions as to its use (where and how much to use). However, it is now firmly in place, and looks just like the illustration!
Delivery was, as usual with Amazon, fast and efficient. Friends and neighbours are impressed by it, so all in all, a worthwhile purchase.
