5.0 out of 5 stars A Fine Recording, 11 Mar 2004
The Coffee cantata was apparently as close as Bach ever got to composing a conventional opera. It is a lighthearted piece about a father's attempts to get his daughter to abandon her addiction to coffee (obviously the bane of 18th century youth).
Generally, you can't go too far wrong with the combination of Emma Kirkby soprano, Christopher Hogwood conductor and the L'Oiseau Lyre label. This version of the Coffee and Peasant Cantatas is no exception. Kirkby is my favourite soprano and here, you feel she is at the peak of her powers. The effortless way she breezes through her arias gives this recording the necessary light and playful tone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, lousy subtitles, 11 Mar 2004
This review is from: Pepe Le Moko [DVD] (DVD)
This French classic was a hugely influential film. Not only did it spawn a Hollywood remake (Algiers), but it set the tone for cinema in the following decade.
Unfortunately the subtitles on this release are shocking, being almost impossible to read against any white in the background. As a result, you spend a lot of the time straining to read the dialogue instead of watching the action.
Final verdict: Five stars for the film and one star for the subtitles.
