5.0 out of 5 stars Waterloo - Corrigan, 16 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not exactly ground breaking but a superb explanation of the ground, the men involved, their weapon and tactics. Gordon Corrigan brings an old soldier's perspective that is more illuminating than many academic historians I have read. He is very readable and for those who have never read much about Waterloo 1815, this is a very good place to start.

Letters To My Grandchildren
Letters To My Grandchildren

4.0 out of 5 stars Letters to my grandchildren, 29 April 2014

However much one may disagree with Tony Benn's politics (he was often spectacularly wrong), one cannot help but admire his passion and integrity. There is much food for thought in these beautifully crafted letters.

4.0 out of 5 stars 1914 - Fight the Good Fight, 29 Sep 2013

We are to be inundated in books on the subject of the Great War in the coming year. Alan Mallinson's explanation of the war's origins is likely to be one of the best. He has an attractive writing style, as one would expect from the author of the Matthew Hervey series of historical novels. Equally important he has reduced to complex series of events that led to the war to a narrative that is easy to follow and understand. My only complaints are that there is no bibliography and there are minimal foot or end-notes to substantiate many of his references. Since some of his judgements might be regarded by some (such as apologists for German actions) as controversial, this is a a pity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Light Horse, 28 Aug 2013

This review is from: The Lighthorsemen (1987) (DVD)
An exciting and interesting film that covers a little known period of military history. It is tale of the Australian Light Horse in the middle east (Palestine) during the Great War fighting the Ottoman Empire in 1917. Unusually, the film makers have taken much trouble to ensure that the scenes, clothing, equipment and, of course, the horses realistically portrayed with correct period detail. Suitably action-packed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jack Lark 1, 17 Aug 2013

I rather enjoyed the first instalment of Jack Lark's colourful service experience. Although there are improbable elements in the tale they do not detract from a good yarn about a poor boy who joins the British Army, does well and then his career is apparently shattered and he loses his first love. His recovery takes him to the Crimea and the Battle of the Alma - where the action is described in convincing detail. I look forward to the next instalment, however improbable!

5.0 out of 5 stars Danny Lancaster #3, 28 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have been a fan of Danny Lancaster's escapades since the Wreck of the Margherita. I agree with the other reviewers who write that each tale is better than the one before. This one is full of well paced, drama with many a twist and turn as Danny gets himself in and out of trouble. Bill Todd is said to be working on the fourth novel in the series. I can't wait!

These ear defenders work for me. Light and easily pocketable Excellent value for the price.I bought them because i saw that B ASC issued them to people on their Young Shots programme. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

The Royal Flying Corps began its life at Larkhill on the edge of Salisbury Plain, near Amesbury. Following some very dedicated and detailed research, Tim Brown has put together an unusually interesting explanation of the trials and tribulations of the early years of what, in 1918, became the Royal Air Force. As a local resident I found it most interesting. I suspect I am not alone in being surprised at how many traces remain to this day. Indeed the National Trust arranges guided walks in the area under the banner of 'Wings over Larkhill'. Anyone with an interest in the early years of British military aviation will enjoy this book.

I remembered this film from my youth with happy memories. Seeing it again many years later was fun, although it was not quite the blockbuster of my memory. Nonetheless, it is a happy film with some good tunes. All the of the main characters will be recognised by film fans of 1950's movies.

As a fan of 'Anne of Green Gables' my wife was fascinated to read the personal journals of the author. She has devoured each of the three so far with great enthusiasm and is ready to move on to volume IV.
